Title: R.A.W.-Daz Dillinger
Post by: Tanjential on January 27, 2007, 01:47:21 AM
How is RAW by Daz not as good as streetz iz a mutha? I'd say RAW is as good as streetz,a west coast classic. all produced by daz (a couple produced by soopa and e3) and its mad consistent. daz really brings it and there's a grip of really good Kurupt collaborations. it also feels like streetz'counterpart. streetz has daz on its title track and raw has kurupt on its title track, they're like counterpart albums its crazy. But anyway I see streetz get mentioned alot but I feel this album is mad slept on.

also, anyone else notice that before baccstabbers starts, daz is playing 'fuck da world' from smoke odyssey a year before that shit dropped? and then daz says "they don't know about that new shit, huh?"

also, is Daz talking about snoop on what it iz "all that pimp shit don't impress or faze me/all the work i did for yall and yall can't pay me?"
anyone know who he's speakin' on in that song?

On tha grind is such a gorgeous fucking song. The production is so timelessly good. It feels like Daz and Kurupt suspended in time, musically banging forever, the keyboard, piano and bass are perfect as fuck in this track.

the track R.A.W. itself is really creative too, this album is wested the fuck out and there's no whack tracks. also, my favorite Latoiya williams track ever 'agony' is on this album as an intro to the banging ass Kurupt collabs 'feels good'. tray deee, slip capone, bigg pimpin',lil c style and even mark morrison jump on that shit.

I bumped this shit all the way through today for the first time in a long time and it feels fresh as 2000 to me, shit is timeless. daz drops hard ass funk, from the first song on the album "what cha talkin' bout" (such a classic gangsta beat) to the closing baccstabber.

how much access to people outside of CA actually have to this album? I was able to get it when it came out but i'm in so cal.

I think it's his best album, just beats out RRGB

Kurupt reused a couple songs from R.A.W. on Smoke Odyssey.

But I think Streetz is a much better album only because Daz isn't much of a lyricist. Musically, I like R.A.W. and think it's Daz's second best album after Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back, but it just doesn't stand up to the playablity of Streetz. R.A.W. just doesn't have that universal sound that Streetz does.

though daz isn't a lyricist:
a) he's a more consistent rapper than Kurupt(Kurupt's my favorite too, but he's often hit and miss)
b)he's a tight rapper
c)if you really listen, alot of his rhymes are well thought out and he can stick to a topic real well. Even the words he's rhyming are often original in nature, dude tries, at least in this album.

so what he lacks in lyrical oomph like Kurupt he makes up for in consistency to me.

I also like the lesser beats on RAW more than the lesser beats on streetz (ex: my system's beat is doper than the beat to tequila)

I'd say its Daz's best album, but I don't think its on the level of Streetz lyrically Kurupt was murdering tracks on Streetz plus it also had Crooked and Xzibit on it, RAW is definitely slept on tho

Yeah man, They had the whole "The Love Below/Speakerboxx" deal thing without the package itself being a dual disc case. I was checking out Retallation, Revenge & Getback, after hearing a few tracks from it. Im about to buy a bunch of Daz's solo shit, so I might as well start there and here. Already bought DPGcLP.

My opinion on Daz lyrically:
People always discredit Daz for being lyrical for some reason. Just because half the time he neglects complex metaphors, wordplays and excedra. Truth is, the motherfucker has a duo group with Kurupt - the guy who abuses vocabulary as much as Canibus. If he really wanted to be that type of rapper you know its just a simple thing of getting advice or working for it. Truth is after awhile you have to stop stereotyping and stigmatating and just take an artists' individual style and lyricism for what it is. Its individuality, not everyone can be that complex ass "TOP FIVE DEAD OR ALIVE" emcee. Kurupt had that role though, and its because of roles like this and versatility that I will always fuck with D.P.G. Even though every emcee is hit or miss at times, Kurupt is a victim of his own lyricism. If that was Daz spitting those wordplay induced verses on S.D.D.S we'd be on some "aw shit, Daz is on his way to top 5", but because KURUPT was the motherfucker on "New York, New York", "A Doggz Day Afternoon" and in the 4HRSMN, he has at times, set the standard too high. Thats why it SEEMS LIKE Daz is getting better lyrically. But I think its just Daz holding out consistency, regardless he's changed a bit lyrically and productionwise.

I have heard that this album was supposed to be a death row album.. After daz left DR, he released it because of money problems. so you know why the booklet is so cheap  ;D

At that time Daz really produced some bomb azz tracks. Listen to One Nine 99, Whos knoccin at my door or what it iz.. What It Iz is hell as fuck. Thats true G-Funk 8)

to me it's Kurupt's the MC and Daz is the producer, so Daz is as tight as what he does on RAW as Kurupt is tight as what he does on Streetz. yeah, speakerbox/love below is a good comparison.

and to me Kurupt is very inconsistent on Streetz, and I love streetz but he drops the ball a few times in that shit.

I had it about a year before it was actually released

I think its better than Streetz

Daz has a better flow than kurupt

easily Daz 2nd best album, really nice album

Did you know Daz and Bad Azz rapped over the Street Gangs beat, but song was never released.

I like Raw because at the time it was Daz's 2nd album and it is more of a offical album to me. RR&GB was dope but it had like the whole west coast on it so it felt more like a compilation. Streetz was a upgrade lyrically from Kuruption but not by much. What made Streetz dope for me was more Daz features because he only produced 2 tracks on the first one and he did not rap and the beats were banging on Streetz. Tough to say which was better, I still bang both of them.

the last sentence of this post, you talking about RAW vs. streetz?

I say they're equal counterparts. who's your favorite two assasins upon the mic? DazKurupt.

i can see how someone could see RAW as better (more consistent album) and I can see how someone could see streetz is better (the lyrical moments on streetz are more impressive than the more lyrical moments on RAW) but I think they balance out to equality.

where can I get daz and bad azz rapping over the street gangs beat?

also, at the end of RAW, Kurupt says "you're lucky simon ain't home" he mean suge? man dude was still down with suge back then AND in the song "fresh" on Kuruption near the end, somewhat quietly says "death row-fresh"

I think he just feels/felt a legitimate loyalty to the organization that first allowed him to make some cheese. i don't blame him.

and

I know On tha Grind from RAW is on space boogie but I like OTG contextually better in R.A.W. and the space boogie version doesn't say 'crip' at the end when Kurupt yells that shit.

also, I think people tend to think that Kurupt rips shit up a grip on streetz cause it's a really well put together album, though this makes the record quality it doesn't translate to nothin' but heat MC wise from Kurupt.

brilliant album....if u listen 2 "This Iz Not Over "Till We Say So"" this is the song for me where daz shines properly...very tight beat and daz exhibits some brilliant lyricism...

Word on the street is that you better have some heat
By your side
Caught your homie slippin', did he survive?
One to the head left him dead off the words that he said
Could have been avoided if he would have drove off instead
Nigga shot at my crib where my momma and kids live
No doubt, now it's time to take some more of you out
Scan the block with an inferred dot, just for a victim
There he go, there he was, there he go let's get him
My motto is no remorse and that you'll never surrender none
Only rely on your self and your gun
Biage, as I get high and look at the stars
Wish and wish and pray to God for our downfall
'Cause then it's back to the same thang, of this life I lead
Bitches, money, and niggas, and weed
Bust a left on one O feral with a double pump barrel
Be careful, cause these streets could sometimes leave ya narrow
With the faith of Moses, and the power of Pharoe
With the bullets hotter than fire and as swift as an arrow
Death becomes your every wish you try to blast me and miss
Now me and my dogs commence to get in your shit
You say the lord is your shepherd and you shall not walk
It's time to gaffle up these niggas stick 'em dead in the trunk
Behold the last words spoken by a dead man
It seems to realize niggas 'll never understand

very nice  8)

yeah i'd agree. kurupt gets daz beats, soopafly, etc anyway so it's basically would I rather listen to Kurupt or Daz? I mean Daz has nice verses(he was better on Ride Wit Us) but he doesn't stay as fresh as Gotti on a whole album.

thought I'd bring this discussion back up, I've recently started listening to RAW again and I have to agree with T this album is as good as any DPG solo record when you look at the dopeness of the production and Daz solid rhymes throughout. It's more of a solo album when compared to RR&GB which had alot of guests basically on every track. To me that album "R,R&GB" is Daz equivelent to Kurupt's "Streetz" basically a DPGC album with alot of dope guest spots. The beats on RAW are  :o

I could never get into RAW or R,R&GB.  Every time I try to put those on, I never make it to the end.  Can't explain why though because I liked most of Daz's other stuff, except for "Gangsta Party."

I know that I'm definitely in the minority not liking R.A.W.

"RAW" is up there, but I'd take "Streetz" over it any day...Kurupt's lyrical skill was just drastically superior to Daz's around that time period. Daz's album is more musical, but I still feel the harder beats on "Streetz" over any of the beats on "RAW". I dunno if I'd call "RAW" a classic, but it's definitely damn near classic status...I'ma go listen to that shit right now, it's been a while since I bumped that album...PeACe
