Jay-Z pleaded guilty Wednesday morning (October 17) to stabbing record producer Lance "Un" Rivera in December 1999 and is expected to be sentenced to probation.

He faces up to three years' probation for the third-degree assault charge, according to a spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney's office.

The incident took place December 2, 1999, at the Kit Kat Club on West 43rd Street in Manhattan, at a listening party for Q-Tip's solo album Amplified. Jay-Z, who had performed earlier that night at a separate party for his own then-new album, The Life and Times of S. Carter, had denied any wrongdoing from the start .
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 6.

A spokesperson for defense attorney Murray Richman confirmed the guilty plea but offered no further comments.

Spokespersons at Island Def Jam and Roc-A-Fella, the label Jay-Z co-founded with Damon Dash, couldn't comment by press time.

Before the plea, Jay-Z faced up to 15 years in jail on charges of felony assault in the second degree if found guilty at trial.

The case had been rescheduled numerous times since Jay-Z's arrest on December 3, 1999 .
Besides avoiding jail time for the December assault, the gun-possession charge Jay-Z was arrested on earlier this year was dismissed Tuesday, according to a Manhattan district attorney spokesperson. The rap star, bodyguard Hamza Hewitt and two other men were arrested April 13 when New York police found a loaded .40-caliber Glock in Hewitt's waistband (see "Jay-Z Arrested On Gun Charge"). Hewitt admitted sole ownership of the firearm, and Judge Charles Solomon dismissed the charges against the other three men. Hewitt will be sentenced for criminal possession of a weapon on December 4.

It's kinda bullshit that jsut cuz you famous you only get 3 years probation for stabbin somebody.  This shit is crazy, especially since Lance Un Riviera was Biggie's close friend and Jay Z always acts like him and Biggie was tighter than shit.  Oh well, i am glad Jay is free to make music i guess...

Yeah that is fucked up. Anyone else would have gotten years! I know someone who's doing 7 years just for BEING there when someone else stabbed this other guy...

It's also funny how Jay Z's been talking about being innocent, not guilty, for tha last couple years and then he turns around and pleads guilty.

If you had the choice... Plead guilty and have a 3 years prob. or keep on fightting crooked judges to finaly have 15 years, I think the choice is clear

Thats nothing. He's really lucky to get 3 years probation. Wouldn't it be crazy to see how the rap game would react if jigga went to prison. Who do you think would become the top dog of the game.

The only difference would be that DMX would dethrone Jigga as most overatted rapper, but once Jigga came back from the pen there would be enough hype for him to once again reclaim his spot as the  most overated rapper in history.

woa this is kinda strange he makes a big ass deal about not being guilty and then changes his story (regardless if he's doing this for minimum penalty to get it over with ...he has WELL over enough money and good lawyers to bail him out but doesn't ???)

but he stabs a dude and only gets 3 years??????????????
all i got to say is whoever issued that sentence must be a huge jay-z dick rider becuase i know kids who have stabbed peeps and are thrown in jail for at least 6 months, god my dad had a stricter sentence than this and all he did was get in fist fight ....this is bullshit

Exactly right. I dont think its fair.

Jay Z STABBED SOMEONE. He didnt just punch them, he didnt kick them, he STABBED. Do you know how much a low life someone who delibrately stabs someone is (except in certain cases & self-defence). Jay Z stabbed him because, what, Lance bootlegged Jay Z's CD's.

I could somewhat understand if Jay Z was a young rapper with no money trying to make some money to get outta the hood, but Jay Z is already a millionaire, why the fuck should the bootlegging mean so much to Jay Z to the point he has to stab someone.

I'm not saying Lance is innocent, & he deserved something for bootlegging Jay's shit, but STABBED, no way. That is life threatening shit.

Ohh well, fuck Jigga, i just bootleg his CD's myself from now on that slimmy selfish asshole

Just because Jay-Z made a guilty plea doesn't mean that he is guilty of the crime.  I took 2 years of law enforcement and I know how trial procedings work.  There is a pre-trial period, in which both sides try to come to a decision in the case that both sides will agree with, before the media can get their grubby hands all over an entire trial.  The sentence in these cases is rarely made by the judge, it is an agreement by both sides, which means that Jigga(and his lawyers) agreed to plea guilty on the charges to receive a lower sentence, and Lance "Un"Rivera(and his lawyers) had to also agree.

4 years ago I was caught up in a case of robbery, which the original sentence was 6 months-2 years in jail, I went through the pre-trial procedings and got everything knocked down to 6 months probation.  It all really depends on how you play the game, and if you understand all of your options, not if you have the money(although celebrity status doesn't hurt, but look at money launderers, they usually have huge amounts of money and they still get sentenced according to thier crimes)

All I'm trying to say is that just because Jay-Z pleaded guilty doesn't mean that he did the crime.  If he would have gone through the trial procedings, which would have cost him a lot of money, look at OJ he's broke now, and then there's the chance that the jury would have held a bias against the stereotypical rap image and found him guilty on all charges, putting him on lock for years.

You do have a point, alot of people do plead guilty so they can get a lesser sentence without having to go thru court & have things exposed to the media, having the risk of getting found guilty, & if that happens you get harsher punishment.

However, on the other hand, the LAW must have had good enough evidence pointing to Jay-Z doing the crime, if they didn't, then Jay Z could have pleaded Not Guilty & waited for a jury to aqquit him.

So if the law had enough evidence & he pleaded guilty, I would say there is a good chance that he was really guilty.

I see your point though, I just thought I would give some other arguements to the case.

Just because he pleaded guilty doesn't make him guilty.  He's a well known black figure.  He could've got jail time just for that in the trial.  I rather go with three years probation than risk the chance of getting 15 years.
