Illmatic was like tha best concious album......And Chronic was like tha best Gangsta album......So I dunno

What r u talkin about illmatic being mad overatted, that CD is classic, I guess whatever floats your boat, but to say illmatic cant even suck tha Chronic's balls is stupid. Nas is like snoop, they both live off tha sucess of there first CD, if illmatic was overratted, than no1 would care less about nas 2day. Trauma I take ur not to much of a east coast fan b/c u pretty much ripped each CD apart that was from tha east.

Sorry,That's Just My Opinion. I Love StuffFrom The East, But Hey, Since I DO Run A Westcoast Webpage, And This IS A Westcoast Message Board, It Shouldn't Be a HUGE Surprise, That I Think The Best Ever Westcoast Album Is Much Better Than One of The Eastcoast's Cd's.

This is hard, because i LOVE both of these albums, they are both in my top 5. They both are incredible, but i think Illmatic is better front to back. I don't feel a couple songs on the Chronic, and i feel everyhting on illmatic,
However, Illmatic sounds dated nowadays, whereas Chronic sounds like it could have been recorded last week. It will always sound fresh, plus it broke Snoop, NAte, DgP, RBX, all my fav's.
These albums are completely different, damn. Illmatic is more underground, hardly commercial at all. It is classic though, i just think you had to have been down when it first came out. Cuz everyone i know who has bought it in recent years doesn't like that shit.
But everyone feels the CHronic, and i feel it is my favourite of the two, if not the best of the two.

While I love both albums, the Chronic changed the game. A gang of producers started jacking that Chronic G-Funk style, almost to the point where everyone started sounding alike. Illmatic was dope, and Nas was universally revered when that shit came out, but it's not like he changed the game.
From a record sales perspective (I know, some people argue sales ain't shit, but i'm just pointing this out), the Chronic went multiplatinum, and Illmatic went gold. So the Chronic was a much bigger commercial success. Nuthin' but a G Thang was the FIRST gangsta rap song in heavy rotation on commercial radio stations and MTV. Once again, Illmatic didn't have a single that changed the game like that.
Just my 2 cents.

illmatic is one of the greatest lyrical records and the chronic is one of the (if not THE best ) produced albums ever

You spoke my mind... I won't even compare them. Both are classics, both are in the top 5 albums of all time and that's that... if you like it or not, thats an opinion, but both these albums are some of the best material ever presented in rap/hiphop today, and thats the truth.

Damn this is hard. I really liked the chronic and illmatic equally......like jake said illmatic was one of the best lyrical records and the chronic was one of the best produced albums.

The Chronic was my first rap album ever, so it is probably my sentimental fav of the two. However, both albums are classic, and are basically neck and neck. And Aftermathematics, Illmatic DID have impact, despite it only going gold. It brought a new profoundness to lyricism, and was one of the albums to SAVE east coast hiphop [along with 36 Chambers, Ready To Die, and The Infamous] when the west coast was dominating.
