Title: LAKERS & WARRIORS=FAVORITES TO GET JASON KIDD.

CALIFORNIA KIDD
WARRIORS, LAKERS FAVORITES TO GET JASON (http://www.nypost.com/seven/02182007/sports/nets/california_kidd_nets_peter_vecsey.htm)

February 18, 2007 -- LAS VEGAS - Cheerless to say, yet indisputably reasonable, in all likelihood, we've seen the last of Jason Kidd in a Nets uniform. On the other hand, I suspect he hasn't lost his ability to grace an occasional New York City tabloid front page.

Within the last week the Warriors, I'm informed, have communicated interest in the Oakland-native and certainly flaunt more than enough assets to outbid the Lakers for his services. I do not know the principles involved, or even if an actual offer was made.

Would the Nets accept, say, Jason Richardson (four years and $55M left after this one), Adonal Foyle (two years and $19M) and rising-free-agent Michael Pietrus? If Jason Collins (two years and $12.3M) were included in the deal, most certainly!

Even should Golden State refuse, I'd do it because it would terminate the guesswork regarding Vince Carter's contract intentions at season's end. Of course, should Carter verbally commit to the Nets before Thursday's trade deadline - and it's established he isn't using Carlos Boozer's agent or wife as consultants - that abruptly ends any notion of dealing Kidd to the Warriors.

The Nets' insistence that Collins accompany Kidd to LA is an obstruction in that trade negotiation, but not intractable, I'm guessing. If a better offer than expiring contracts, draft picks, cash and Kwame Brown or Brian Cook doesn't materialize within the next four days, I'm inclined to believe Kidd will return to the Triangle Offense from whence he began as a rebellious rookie in Dallas under Jim Cleamons, off and on assistant to Phil Jackson for the last 15 years or so.

I'm down, as long as we don't give up Farmar or Bynum... 8)

Kidd would bring a lot to this team. 11 points, 8 rebounds, not to mention the defense he would provide against Nash/T.Parker/Terry would be great for the playoffs.

That would be great... our backcourt D will be  :o.. and I think Kidd got a very high B-Ball IQ so the triangle offense would be quickly understood... Imagine Luke, Kidd, Lamar, Kobe , Bynum... best passing lineup in the league... as Nik said, as long as Farmar and Bynum stay , just do it..

Smush + Cook or Kwame  + Expiring contract of Mihm, Mckie, or Shammond + a draft pick or 2.

i'd do it, shit with bynum on the rise we really don't need kwame anymore, and if kidd gets too old to perform we always got farmar in the background.

I dunno if I'd get rid of Kwame, we're really thin without him. I'd much rather give 'em Cook (though he's a great shooter). We already have VladRad playing the shooting power forward and Turiaf has nice mid-range as well...Losing Kwame now might be too risky though...PeACe

Acquring Kidd would make us VERY hard to beat at full effect.. I prefer to trade Cook or even Vlad than Kwame coz NOW Kwame D 1 on 1 is better than Andrew one... I hope this trade gonna happen . but it's near too nice to be real

Yeah just what I was thinking. I don't want to give up Kwame. I really don't want Cook to go, but hey, this is Jason Kidd were talkin about here.

^^^^ well our current pb is that we give up WAY too many points in the point and I think iit's mainly because of poor perimeter D ... even with Kwame back that's not gonna solve our pb because he's not a GREAT help defender or blocker.. FIRST he's a top 3 defender on the low post and does a great job on keeping the bigs out of the paint... but D begins at the perimeter and Kidd will be a very good upgrade comparing to Smush.. so I'll give up Kwame if it's the only way that trade can be finalize...

Carter, Kidd still on team, for now (http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/117186346076630.xml&coll=1)

DAVE D'ALESSANDRO

The Nets will resume practice this evening, and when they reconvene -- barring travel difficulties -- Jason Kidd and Vince Carter will be among them.

"There's nothing that's even close to fruition, just the usual discussions," Nets president Rod Thorn said last night from Las Vegas. "I certainly don't anticipate anything happening in the next few days. So yes, it's almost assured that we'll have the same players at practice tomorrow."

Thorn said recently that with the trade deadline looming Thursday, he was still trying to gauge whether Carter has more definitive plans this summer, after divulging that his leading scorer "wants to become a free agent." In other words, he wanted to be clear whether Carter will opt out of his contract in June, which could have a profound effect on what action the team takes this week.

"You can't always get what you want. Let's say there were discussions, but there's nothing definitive at this time," Thorn said, clearly referring to Carter's agent Kurt Schoeppler.

"It doesn't affect what we do, not necessarily -- from my perspective," Thorn added. "I have to look at what my options are, whether they're good or not so good. And then we try to ascertain what options he has -- who's under the cap, who might have a need. But that doesn't mean we're going to trade Vince. We're only going to trade someone if it benefits us.

"He said he would play through the season and then decide what he's going to do. He may not opt out at all."

Thorn reiterated that he understands the repercussions of moving a player such as Kidd. But he would not concede that a trade for Kidd automatically means the team is tearing it up and starting again.

"It depends," Thorn said. "For theoretical purposes, if you trade a guy like that, it depends on what you get in return -- as to whether you will or won't be rebuilding, when it comes to a player of that magnitude."

Then can he foresee a deal involving Kidd that wouldn't be a teardown job?

"Uh, that's a difficult question," Thorn said. "I've talked to teams about a lot of players. I'd say I wouldn't use the term 'rebuilding.' I would say, 'restructuring.' But no, you're not going to get a player as good as that guy."

And yes, he added: He is also thinking that a deal involving Kidd would have serious psychological effects on everyone from the average fan to the average teammate.

"True," he said. "That's why I have to think very seriously about doing something like that."

David Aldridge on Kidd Trade (http://netsdaily.com/blog/?p=313)

Jason Kidd has been injured, but he has been in the news lately…a lot of trade rumors going on…whether the Nets are going to move their veteran point guard. Now the Los Angeles Lakers have been trying to get him traded.

And guys, I am told, that even though they haven’t gotten much done with the Nets, they are trying to keep the talks alive. Now they are trying to involve the Portland Trail Blazers. The main piece would be reserve center Jamal Magloire who would wind up going to Los Angeles and then be re-routed along with other players to New Jersey for Kidd. Now, there’s no word that New Jersey is even interested in that kind of offer, although they could use a low post scorer like Magloire for at least a while and have his expiring contract at season’s end. That’s what the Lakers are trying to do to get Jason Kidd in a purple and gold uniform.

Talk turns to shoring up teams' weaknesses

LAS VEGAS — The party's over, so it's time to get back to work.

NBA players, coaches and fans seemed to have a lot of fun during four days of All-Star festivities here, but the season must go on, and the Lakers and Clippers face many questions as they resume play.

The Lakers (30-24) exceeded expectations before the break and would be seeded sixth if the Western Conference playoffs began today, but they have lost five in a row and might make a move before Thursday's noon trading deadline.

The Lakers and New Jersey Nets remain far apart on a trade involving Jason Kidd, with the Lakers less immersed recently because Kidd's back has flared up, a league source said.

Kidd, 34, had played every game this season until being sidelined last week because of a strained lower back.

The Lakers are also unwilling to part with Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum and, to a degree, Luke Walton, limiting the pool of players the Nets could acquire from them.

Also, the Lakers are somewhat wary of Kidd's weighty contract, which calls for two more seasons at a total of $41 million, which probably would push them into luxury-tax territory the next two seasons.

If the Nets do decide to deal Kidd to the Lakers for lesser players, it would be strictly a business decision on their part.

I could see the Lakers being the favorites of winning the ship with this trade. We'll have to see how Kidd and Kobe play with each other, hopefully it won't be like how Iverson and Anthony are playing right now.

Kidd is a true PG though, he's not looking to go out there and crank up 20+ shots like Me, Myself, and Iverson.
