Title: Musically.....Dr. Dre 2001 or Rhythmalism??
Post by: R-Tistic on February 21, 2007, 10:07:57 PM
Of these two albums, which one would you say is better musically? That means aside from the concepts, lyrics, skits, and whatever else.

I'd say..................................

They got completely different styles so it's hard to pick. Rhythmalism is smooth and more soulful. 2001 is futuristic and ahead of it's time. Both albums, I love to death so I can't pick a favorite. Since we're going on music alone, I'ma go with.....

Rhythmalism. 2001 had better concept and guest spots, but musically, I feel Rhythmalism has a better vibe to it.

Good thread BTW R-Tistic.

the difference I can make from both of them is that "2001" had more of the same sound and vibe

"Rhythmalism" had different sounds but with the same vibe

one thing for sure is that I can listen to both all the way through

these 2 albums are definitely in my top 5 alltime

Rhythm-al-ism ---> There's simply more variation in the musical arrangements. Not saying the way that Dre's songs are structured is simple - not at all: he changes up keys/basslines/horns/etc... a lot in his songs - but Quik emphasizes it more in my opinion.

Both classics. But Dre is on some traditional hip-hop shit with the banging beats, while Quik's album is clearly taking a lot more from outside the genre. Almost by that definition, Quik's is by far the more musical in terms of genuine composition.

I'd say..................................

i just read again, and im amazed how you say aside "from the concepts, lyrics, skits and whatever else", what is left off an album when you strip those things from it...lol

an album should be viewed as 1 whole, 1 product and 1 experience, and without the lyrics an album aint an album, but just different parts, and as a whole 2001 >>> rythm-al-ism, imo

Quik's album was a Musical Masterpiece, while 2001 was a Hiphop Classic, so I'll go with Quik's album for this one!

the beats ;)

i'd rather listen to an instrumental version of Rhythmalism then 2001... so Quik gets my vote...

(oeven tho i think 2001 is a better album)

Rhythm-al-ism.

I can't listen to 2001 all the way through.  But I can with Rhythm-al-ism.

Title: Re: Musically.....Dr. Dre 2001 or Rhythmalism??

"Musically" Rhythmalism is far superior simply because of Quik's sense of using unusual jazz/fusion chords and arrangements. Anybody who has basic piano skills can figure out how to play any of the beats from 2001 by ear because most of Dre's beats only use basic minor chords that you would probably learn with a few weeks of piano lessons. Now that's not to take away anything from Dre, what Dre has an edge over Quik with is his ability to polish his beats, to take his simple arrangements and make them sound futuristic and clear without sounding overproduced like, for example, new R&B records. Dre can keep it crisp and still sound grimy. But when it comes to straight out musicianship, Quik definitely wins out with Rhythmalism.

Me too, and XL Middleton's analysis is on point as well.

I have rudimentary piano skills and I can reproduce most hip hop chords, as they're fairly simple for the most part. Quik's album on the other hand, is on some next level shit. It truly is a musical masterpiece.

Rhythm-Al-Ism - no doubt.

Dre's record is the best album "lyrics-wise", Dre is just a master when it comes to producing rappers....But Quik is the best when it comes to making beats 8)

Personally prefer 2001 but both have so many classic songs. Quiks voice can be a bit annoying to me sometimes so i pick 2001.

Rhythmalism of course...that album came out in 98 man, almost 10 years, can you believe that!...musically, no hip-hop album has touched it

Yeah exactly....for one, just as Mygla said, this is basically comparing the instrumental version of these albums. The beats/instrumentals are really what draw people into music...especially for West Coast albums like these.

voted rhythm-al ism, but both albums are classic no doubt.
But I like Quikstas a bit more because it has the "chill effect" 8)
2001 is better to bump it in your car but rhythm-al ism is the bust album to chill

Musically Rhythmalism, Safe & Sound, & Street Gospel> Chronic 2001....seriously, Quik's complexity gets the nod over Dre's crisp simpleness.  I'm still finding instrumental adlibs on Quik's albums years after the fact.
