Title: West Coast tracks you didn't expect to hear in the club
Post by: Conan on February 22, 2007, 04:16:42 AM
About a week ago I was out with a group of friends at this night club in Edinburgh, Scotland. I headed upstairs to the Hip-Hop floor to hear what tracks they were playing, mainly expecting to hear the same ol' same. Suddenly, of all the tracks, the DJ throws on Sly Boogy's "It's Nuthin'." I was completely shocked, since the track is hardly well known here and Sly's far from a household name - particularly where I'm from. If they were going to play some West Coast rap, I would have predicted the usual suspects: Dre, Snoop, 2pac, Ice Cube, and at a stretch Tha Dogg Pound. Hearing "It's Nothin" for a change had me totally hyped, and anticipating some Ras Kass or something. Alas, 'twas not to be since after that they went back to the standard tracks.

Anyone had any other experiences like this where you've heard a DJ spin a West Coast track that you totally didn't think would get club play?

Yeah, I guess it's a matter of location. Kurupt and Dre I would expect, but I wouldn't anticipate hearing the others a lot.

I remember people saying Hi-C and Suga Free's "Say Woop" got a cult following in UK clubs.

I'm at work at the moment, but I'm sure someone will be kind enough to do the honours...?

I was very surprised when I heard "Black Mercedes" at a club here in Germany. It made me very happy to hear it in a club.

Any westcoast track, the clubs where i live hardly play any hip hop so hearing california or regulate is rare and a nice surprise.

yea, it's def. a big party record. scott storch laced knoc with a banger, and knoc delivers a real friendly radio/club hook.

LOL, that's no surprsie, it's a Lil Jon beat. I even saw the video for that song here when I was at Burger King, where they have TV's. They showed the video on "VIVA" which is a 100% pop-music channel. They even showed "Go To Church" there.

Since I live here (Southern California), I'm not suprised when I hear west coast tracks being played. Pretty much any club you go to where they play hip hop, the DJ will have a "west coast" segment where you'll hear Still Dre, Bitch Please, Ain't No Fun, shit like that.

The only time I'm surprised is when they play something a little more obscure. I remember hearing Kam's I Don't Think So in a club in Long Beach, that song is somewhat obscure except for us hard core west coast heads.

I guess if I lived in Germany and heard DJ Quik, I'd be surprised.

Not too many tracks I heard in L.A. surprised me, since it's L.A.....but in Tallahassee, it's been a few.

I heard one hyphy song in the club that I still have never heard again. They used to play "Wrong Idea" a WHOOOOOOLE LOT more than L.A. ever played it, and L.A. clubs never ever played that track. Back in 02-03, that was one of the only West Coast tracks they played, along with "Still ballin" from Pac and Trick (because Trick's from Miami).

They played WC "The Streets" one time....and I miiiight have heard "The way I am" back in 04. One time, they were playin West Coast tracks since we were kinda deep, and they played "Straight outta Compton". As for everything else I've heard here, it was all typical.....Snoop, Pac, Game, Cube, Dre.
