He joined Galactus ( a giant planet destroying alien monster) and sacrificed himsrelf in order to keep his home planet from being destroyed. He then served as assistant to Galactus and granted powers. He is job was to find suitable planet for Galactus to consume (that's how Galactus stays strong). After going up against the Fantastic 4 he eventually switched sides and went against Galactus.

While Stan Lee did a lot to develop the character it was Jack Kirby that created him.
