Some of y'all might remember that around this time last year I did an editorial that examined the West Coast Hip-Hop scene throughout the prior year, 2005. I am now (belatedly, I might add) starting work on the '06 edition. With my memory of '05 already steadily fading, I was hoping DubCC could suggest moments worthy of inclusion in this year's 'Rap Up. I know I'm missing plenty of good stuff. Here's what I have so far:
- Dogg Pound: Solo from Daz, the disappointment of Cali Iz Active, Young Gotti solo
- Big guns come out for the fourth quarter: Snoop, Game...
- Hip-Hop goes hyphy, (E-40 and company)
- Ice Cube returns, Gold independantly
- Formation of Western Union, Warzone
- Xzibit leaves Strong Arm Steady, who sign to Kweli's Blacksmith label
- Dilated Peoples, J5 drop new albums
- DJ Khalil produces for Jay-Z
- Game/Ras feud
- Ca$his signs to Shady Records, featured in XXL and on "You Don't Know"
Like last year's 'rap up,' I want this edition to span both underground and gangsta rap. Please hit me with stuff I've forgotten, whether it's:
- West Coast producers doing it big
- Rising new stars
- Artists getting signed
- Beefs, etc.
Thanks y'all.

Is xzibit still cool with them or he just left? didn't know about that. x signed with kweli, or sas did? out of all the crews x is affiliated with, I knew least about SAS, where are they based or do they have members from all over?

Xzibit hasn't said that he isn't cool with them anymore, so I think it boils down to "creative differences." Strong Arm Steady was originally comprised of X, Phil The Agony, Krondon and Mitchy Slick but now the latter three remain. They're all from the West Coast. I believe: Phil and Krondon are from LA, and Mitchy's from San Diego. However, there are lots of SAS affiliates: namely Planet Asia, Rasco (together the Cali Agents), Ras Kass, Kweli, Dilated Peoples, Defari, DJ Khalil, and Chace Infinite (aka Self Scientific). Since X left the whole team has been pretty quiet though, so don't know which of those cats are still down with SAS.
Xzibit parted ways when the trio signed to Kweli's Warner Brother's imprint, Blacksmith. X is now coming out on his own Open Bar label, distributed through Koch.
You should definitely check them out, man. Phil The Ag's solo, "Aromatic," comes strongly recommended.
