Title: 5 Reasons Why Hip-Hop is Dead
Post by: phatpat on March 15, 2007, 01:20:31 PM
1. No originality - has anyone noticed all the beats - regardless if you are Westcoast, Eastcoast, South sound almost exactly the same, with the same 808 snares and claps - and the same corny Triton synths.
2. Generic subject matter in all the songs - hoes, money, grills, pimpin, shooting clubbing zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
3. Too many old rappers past their peak still releasing albums: Snoop, Jay-z, Nas, Ghostface, Dogg Pound - These rappers had albums out 10 years ago.
4. The so called new generation are wack - Lil Wayne + Jeezy + Juelz are okay, not great.
5. Ludacris won a grammy for the rap album of the year - and that album was GARBAGE - says something about state of hip-hop.

1. I agree (for the most part)
2. I agree
3. Besides Nas, I a gree
4. Fuck no, Lil Wayne is hot!
5. Although true, that has nothing to do with hip hop being dead.

I've only heard some tracks from Ghastface's albums last year, and I'm absolutely sure he's FAR from the reason why "hip-hop is dead".Ghostface can still compete with the greatest of all time in Hip-Hop.And from what I've heard from Blue Carpet, album ain't bad at all.

Bottomline...

Hip-Hop is not dead, Just us older folk who grew up on the N.W.A.'s
Eazy-E, Saw "Beat Street" bashed "Breakin'" for selling out (remember that).

Listened to the entire rise & fall of the West Coast
The Cube's, Deathrow ect..

We are all grown up now.
This music ain't for us anymore, it's evolved for the next generation.
I admit to hating 99% of all new music out today.
the only hip-hop material I cop nowaday's is either an album from back in the day's
I might have lost or replacing, or a "new" album from a so called Washed up artist.
(Snoop, Cube, Nas, Jay-Z ect...)

Hip-Hop is not Dead....We just out grew it.
Everything that these kid's are doing has already been done & said before.

Hip-Hop is on repeat.

lol you dont KNOW the value and how much weight the statement actually holds. This is because you do not have much of an idea of what Hiphop is because all of your five mentions are focued on one element. And your so called reasons of detroriation of those five mentions are harshly opinionated and bias. If anything, hiphop would be dead because people cant identify it for what it is..A CULTURE, One reason why its alive is Nas making us re-evaluate the statement and what hiphop means to us. OUTSIDE OF THAT,  its nothing more than a clever marketing gimmick. I mean why else would every rapper who had a problem with the statement be on a label ALONGSIDE Nas? That could be coincidence, then again so could Snoop/Eminem/Dre always releasing albums right before one and other.

1) dances are stiill present,
2) DJs still run the rap scenes in the streets (and because I still fuck with DJ Screwtapes)
3) There are quality rappers in my collection
4) There is graffiti on my schools and neighborhood

when all of the above just suddenly vanish I will account you for something.

I wouldn't say hip hop is dead, just look at the New West coast. Bishop, Omar, Crooked, Ya Boy - a lot of talent that hasn't been seen for a while on the west coast. And the same is happening in other places; Lupe Fiasco in Chi, papoose, saigon, joell ortiz in the east.

Why you tryna find reasons why hip hop is dead, when you could use your time and try to find why it is alive ?! Cause it's alive than never, if Nas released an album and a single with that name, doesn't matter that it is true! I consider Nas one of the greatest of all time, I put him 3rd place after Rakim and Immortal Technique, but that doesn't mean I consider Hip Hop is dead !

Pls tell me why there weren't any threads with Hip Hop is dead BEFORE Nas said it? Last year this time we were trippin about DPG getting toghether and now we claim they wack?!

for real WTF is this confusion between rap and hiphop get some culture mother*****

I think when Nas says HipHop is dead he means the funny part in all that has gone or something like that

Because back in the days hiphop gathered people: men, women, etc .the mc's had something to say & the dj djed
The females don't rap nomore for example, or so few. They gone into the r'n'b branch because it's the gangsta era or wannabe gangsters & they can't compet.

Now it's the era of mc's trying to sing, showing off their bling bling, they sell us mixtapes which are not "mixtapes" and the list goes on.It's all that, that's my belief.

Hiphop is not dead.  You think this because you are not in the streets.  Hiphop is only dead for people who expect to see it in the media outlets, or for rappers that expect to make billions of dollars of it.  Just because you don't see your favorite rapper on tv its dead?  Hiphop lives in the streets and always will and it never meant to be about money or fame.  Its starting to rebuild itself.  Check your local blocks, this is still the most influential genre in America.

i'm sorry but to the people who say hip-hop is dead is because 2pac isn't around is fucking retarded. 2pac was a rapper, not the godfather of rap behind the scenes.

Agreed 100%

But i dont know  if you can say HIP HOP is dead because the artists in other countries are pretty dope.  That is if you can understand the language and what they're saying.

Lot of rappers in europe and middle east are really creative and intelligent with their songs.  In the last couple of years i've been into rappers from Iran and they are spitting some fire.  They  put out lots of classics day in and out like PAC, biggie, nas and them used to do.

So the solutions is for US rappers to step it up and get more educated.  I blame it on the school system and the media. :D

Yeah, pretty sure I just gasped when I saw you mentioned Ghostface as one of the rappers "past their prime" ruining hip hop. That's beyond blasphemy fool you need repent and hopefully (for your sake) the mighty Tony Starks forgivith thou for thyn irreverence. Ghostface is like a fine wine getting better with time, veloured down like the sheik of Iran... everyone knows since the 'face been revealed the game got real!

Ghostface is for the children

No offense man, but is your opinion by record sales or by what Nas told you?

1. If there is a certain sound that people like then it's going to be duplicated. That is the way it is in ALL music genres. Not just hip hop.  You can't tell me that hip hop from 1980s to 2007 all has the similar beats..  So you understand that hip hop has it's eras (g-funk, snap music, etc) just like Rock (ska, grunge, alternative).

2. Same as #1.

3. What's wrong with longevity? That's actually a good thing.

4.  Ofcourse this is your opinion. I think that these rappers nowadays are more talented than the older rappers because they are not giving the resources of the old school rappers. I mean can you imagine if The Game had Dr Dre, DOC, Daz, Kurupt, Lady of Rage, RBX, J-Flexx, Sean Barney etc etc locked in the studio for weeks with one goal of making sure you had the best music possible? You can't get that kind of collaboration these days.

5. The grammys are not the people's choice awards. So who knows who is choosing the winners. Besides, did you see the artists that were eligible in the timeline for this year's award? Who else should of won it?

this is my favorite of what you just said. labels aren't labels anymore. they're just two or three mothafuckaz at a time saying they're a movement when they can't even drop records most of the time. everyone looked at me like I was a fuckin' idiot when I suggested asking Gail Gotti about dre, 10 years ago, more mufuckaz woulda saw where I was coming from.
