ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- An 88-year-old Orange County woman is in the hospital after being shot five times. Her home on Turkey Lake Road was riddled with bullets just after midnight, early Monday.
Detectives don't believe anybody was trying to murder Yuki Harris. Either the shooters had the wrong house are they were after somebody else who they believed was inside. Either way, three men, who fired more than 20 shots at close range, are on the loose.
In the homes along Turkey Lake Road, residents are used to getting a good night's sleep. Andrew Riley said they are not used to gunshots.
"It was a lot in quick succession. I don't have a clue, seven or eight. It was bang, bang, bang, bang, bang," Riley said.
He lives around the corner from the intended target. Orange County detectives said, about 30 or 40 minutes after midnight, there may have been more than 20 shots fired through the doors and windows of the brick ranch. In one of the bedrooms, 88-year-old Yuki Harris was hit five times.
"We don't believe it was a random act. This house was targeted. For what reason, we do not know," said Cpl. Susan Soto, Orange County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said Harris and her daughter, 58-year-old Michi Nogami, were the only ones home when the shots were fired. Nogami's room also has several bullet holes in the walls, but she was not hurt.
Right after the shooting stopped, a neighbor told deputies she saw three men running away from the house. When officers arrived, they found shell casings all over the front yard. The bullets were fired at close range from a .9-millimeter handgun and possibly an assault rifle.
Detectives believe there may have been a specific target, which is why they intend to interview younger relatives who may sometimes stay at the house.
Harris was shot in the stomach, arm and leg. She was in her bed when the bullets came through the windows and walls. She is in stable condition.
There are no arrests yet in the case.
