Title: Damn, I never realized that was ________ on __________............
Post by: R-Tistic on March 26, 2007, 04:02:37 AM
I know that this happens to most of us....we'll be listenin to an older song, and then we'll recognize that the main aritst or featured artist is somebody that you definitely know, but never had any idea that it was them, even though you've heard the song hundreds of times. Also....there are songs that I heard many times, but never had any idea of who did it...and when I did find out, I still didn't know who they were.

What are some songs that you never recognized the artist or artists on it until later on?

LBC Crew - Beware of my crew.....I remember Bad Azz comin out with "We be puttin it down" in 98, but I don't think I realized that he was on this track til 99, because I never bought any of the Snoop or Death Row albums until 99. I didn't know who Tray Dee or Techniec were until 99 as well, so I just put the pieces together then.

LV ft. Kam - Throw ya hands up....I never really knew who Kam was til 96 or 97 when he dropped "Whoop whoop", so I had no idea who's verse that was...but it was catchy as hell. I don't think I recognized that it was Kam on here til 2000 or so.

2nd II None - If you want it, Hi-C - Puppet........I didn't really start listenin to radio til 93, but these are songs that I still remember hearin from time to time. I had no idea who did them until 99 or maybe even 2000. I don't know how I found out, but I knew both of them from bein on Quik's albums, and had no idea that they were even out in the early 90's...let alone that they had major hits back then. It's still funny talkin to people outside the West, because both of these acts are one hit wonders to them.

Paperboy - Do the diddy.....I think I was low key lookin for this song and artist for about 13 years before I found it. I first heard it when my uncle in Florida played it back in 93, then I remember hearin it a few months afterwards back in L.A., but I didn't know who it was. I heard it again in 98 on Power 106's Phat 500, but I went to the website to search the list, and I could not figure out who it was. I think somebody on Dubcc posted somethin about it, and I downloaded it, and figured out who it was...then found out more about him and Rhythm D.

World Class Wreckin Cru - Turn off the lights....I used to hear this song randomly as hell, usually on late night mixes in L.A. I remember Dre sayin somethin bout "since Turn off the lights from the World Class Wreckin Cru" but I still didn't know what he was talkin about. I think I heard someone say that Michel'le was on that song a few years ago, and I ended up findin it and figurin out what it was.

Groove Theory - Tell me....I always knew who the group was by name, but never knew that was Amel Larrieux singing on it til last year.

Well i'll be honest, i use to think Spice 1 was a member of Bone Thugs that got kicked out, cuz he didn't quite follow the same rhyme pattern!! Stupid right??..hahahah ;D

I use to listen to Gap Band, i never knew who they were..plus Charlie Wilson was in that group as well..i only recognised his vocie from the tracks he done with Snoop On The Dogg Father and a few others.

Snoop Dogg feat Kurupt,Nate Dogg & Warren G-Ain't no Fun If My Homey Can't Have None

it took me awhile to realize that Warren G was on that track..cuz when he comes in straight after Snoop's verse it's kinda hard to distinguish that it is a different rapper..
It Was not until i picked up the Cd and looked at the credits, and realized my folly ;D

Get Up Get Down on Coolio's 2nd album. This was I think the first song Ras Kass appeared on. And alot of people don't know that Coolio gave him his first big break. It is a posse cut with Malika, Coolio, Ras, WC and a few other rappers on it, but Ras killed his verse. I remember having to go back and check the credits to see who was rapping.

Wow, Paperboy.  . . that is bringing it back. I used to love that song. I remember an issue of the Source where he was in the booth writing lyrics for Eazy-E.

On Niggaz4Life, the one skit 1-900-2-Compton where the dude is callin' his bitch. . .is that Warren G?? I have been wondering that for years. Literally, for YEARS.

After buying Above tha Law's Livin Like Hustlas in the summer of  1990 6th grade and wondering who the fuck was Freeway Rick they were had on the cover.  Niggaz talk about Jay Z and shit spiittin the hustla game best check the originals in my book.

I heard Gangsta Nip's Horror Movie Rap in 91 I thought it was hilarious twisted for a young kid at that age to think that.

Will admit bumped many of the slow jams of the Death Row Above the Rim soundtrack. Fucked first 3 bitches off that shit.

After The Chronic came out did lose respect for the EastCoast felt beats were pathetic.

Yeah that is Charlie on there, along with Roger. Roger is doin his usual Talkbox on there...but that's Charlie on there soundin just like always does with his adlibs..."doo wee baaaaby! Do wee baaay-baaaay!!". Now that I think about it, I probably didn't realize that was him til 97 or 98, which is when I first learned his name. I just knew him as the dude from Gap Band.

I thought DOC, DJ Quik and Above the Law were in NWA, or they were NWA.

I didn't realize that was Badazz on Beware of my Crew until recently, even though I bought the single when it came out 10 years ago.

I didn't know that was Nas on Back to the Grill again until years after that song came out.

I didn't know that Bushwick Bill was on the Chronic until years later.

I thought Hi-C was Mexican when I first heard him, until I heard "Leave my Curl Alone".

I didn't know who King Tee was when I heard "All in the Same Gang", I had to ask a few people "who's that first rapper on that song".

The Missy Elliot song, is that the one with the burping and farting noises and the hook goes something like "It's ok, it's alright, smoke a fat one and hit the thunderbird"

I forgot where I read that, but if you listen real close it sounds alot like him. Could be wrong though.

LOL, that's cute. But I can't front, it took me a while back in 93-94 to realize that Biggie Smalls was Notorious B.I.G...because the first songs I heard from him were with Heavy D, and it said "Feat. Biggie Smalls" and that's when he had that high rappin style...and the next songs I heard were under "Notorious B.I.G." and he sounded more laid back...so I figured he was his brother or somethin.

Recorded for the song along with that verse that was cut from the final version.

Yeah, if you listen to all those old remixes, he  used that high rappin voice...even on "Dead wrong", that sounds more like his old style. It's some remix he was on with Diddy back in 93, and they still show the video for it sometimes on BET...him, Diddy, and somebody else were at a cafe table rappin n shit, and I thiink he started off like "I love it when they call me big poppa" which is where he originally used what is now the hook for "Big Poppa".
