ive been pumpin Dre2001 alot these days and everytime i hear it I recognize what a classic album this is. Honestly, i think I like 2001 better than The Chronic, dont get me wrong, chronic is a 5 star album, but to get to my point, Dr Dre has this special thing in his productions. I dont know what it is, but I can listen to dre2001 over and over and over again without skippin tracks. And each track, I mean each, is a classic. really.. there aint no tracks which Im gettin sicc of and this album is almost 2 years old. there are even songs on the chronic which i have 2 skip after hearing them for a long time. Im bumpin 2001 as im typing this and I remember when I bought it there were like 3 or 4 tracks that I didnt like; Ackrite, Light Speed Murder Ink and the message but even those tracks became classics after a short time.
IMO theres no better album than 2001. lately some of Dre's production started 2 sound the same but on 2001 theres a variety of completely different tracks.
i think this is Dre's magic [IMO no other producer has] that his tracks arent played out and that u dont start 2 hate them after u listen 2 them a few times and I think this is the difference between him and all the other producers in hop hop and why he's sucha great producer and my favorite.
I wonder if i like his songs just because its him or not. i mean, if I'd hear ja rule or busta rhyme over a beat like XXXplosive and still like it. Probably not, its just the whole concept and his style that I like.
just had to let that out, gotta get bac 2 work ;)

to be honest ...
i borowed my friend my 2001-cd 4 month ago ..... i havent told him to give it back ....yet
i think it's a good example of how much i luv that album ::)

well, i often skip track no. 18... :)
but othervise i feel the sameway...
i think Dre's magic is this "blumpin" effects, they make u lissen to a track over and over, and still like it..
i think 2001 is atleast as good as the chronic
-
shiiiet ... y'all trippin
2001 aint even 50% of chronic

I don't know.....thats just my opinion, an opinion is like an asshole, everybody has one.
-
2001 is a solid album but it's not close to being classic...The Chronic is one of the best rap albums of all time...Too many average tracks on 2001...
-
I don't know.....thats just my opinion, an opinion is like an asshole, everybody has one.
hahahah
well.. i gotta say this.. my opinion is they are both wikkid albums.. the chronic changed the game.. and is the reference everyone points to when someone asks for examples of good uses of layered samples (the other is the beastie boys - pauls boutique).
2001 stepped things up in a different way.. its not as revolutionary in social terms. its hard to shock people nowadays.. but the production has taken a different turn with all the live instrumention. its super clean.. shits 2 years old and only now.. in the year its named after are we seeing productions of a similar calibre from other artists. i do agree when people say that the topics reflected on the album werent anything new.. but i dont care about that.. but the fact is. the album has that timeless quality about it.. more so in some ways than the chronic.
-
True Overseer, it does have that timeless quality to it, but it's very much contemporary, I mean it's only 2 yrs old. I think "2001" has classic potential, I would defo label it a classic now but I guess only time can tell.
-

yeah exactly, and and thats the thing I ment about 2001, it has the 'timeless quality' which is very rare on albums

I agree, I actually think Doggystyle might beat the Chronic too, well at least I listen to it more. Fav track on 2001 is Lets Get High - a track I hardly ever hear anyone talk about but it has a wicked bass-line :)
-
doggystyle is a more polished/forumalated/perfected thing.. but the impact the chronic had paved the way for it.. doggystyle is a continuation of what started with the chronic.
takin shit back another level.. i think efil4zaggin is my fave dre produced album.. definitely the one i listen to the most
-
2001 isnt bad .... i just cant get how y'all can put it on the same level as doggystyle, cbhonic and all eyez on me
-
heh.. well this is where we differ.. coz i hardly rate all eyez on me... i dunno why.. just not my thing (apart from u cant c me.. , cali love 'another dr.dre production' ;D) and 2 of americaz) - i prefer 7 day theory over it esp. stuff like hail mary.
i aint a big 2pac fan.. never have been.
-
Great post Lil Jay. I agree with you 100 percent. 2001 is not as hard as The Chronic which is fine with me. The way I see it, although I realize sampling is a major part of hip hop production, anytime a producer creates his shit from scratch, that makes him a REAL producer. One of the things I love about Dre's music is that I can listen to certain songs twenty times and still hear something I did'nt hear before. The man is simply a musical genius. Both albums are classic's, but for different reasons.

I noticed one of those the other day : eve - let me blow ya mind, if you listen to the instrumental the piano sounds off tune at one part - but with the lyrics over it sounds spot on.
-
funny, i was going to post something similar.
I put 2001 on for the first time in a while yesterday. banged it straight through and damn... this shit still hits like the day i got it. Even the radio singles that got soooo played out are still dope. Actually Ive never once got tired of Still DRE.
im never quick to call albums classic, but after 2 years i think i can safely call 2001 a classic album. Superior production, top notch raps (I appreciate Hittman more after every listen), and well, just a bomb album. except for the skits.
However its still not on The Chronic's level imo, purely for that album sheer originality and historical/musical significance.
-
My opinion =classic

yeah, same here Overseer, i dont know, 2pac was the greatest rapper but still I aint a big fan. i dont know why but i never compare albums to all eyez on me
I appreciate Hittman more after every listen
fuck yeah man, I got the same feeling, i dont know y but I wasnt feelin him at first. he gets better from song 2 song.

i think it's a classic album, 4.5-4.75 out of 5
but anyone who puts this above the OG chronic is out of their gord!
the chronic=best rap album ever
chronic 2001=best rap album dropped in 99'-00'
-
2001 is definatly classic...IMO not a better album has came out since 2001 dropped..
-
2001 is a classic but in my opinion it aint even near tha Chronic, on 2001 though even tha lack luster songs on hear on very good songs.
-
I've played out both albums... Chronic for life... since I lost 2001 I haven't heard it in a while, but yea... it will come back.
-
2001 pretty much classic to me.. always a tight album to isten to.. but as for tha chronic.. 2001 isnt as good.. chronic is just CLASSIC.. 2001 4 sure isnt better than chronic IMO.. just listen to those classic gangsta funky beats
-
but anyone who puts this above the OG chronic is out of their gord!
I admit, Im out of my gord.
but hey, good to c people with different opinions, or else it would b boooring.
-
2001 definently is a classic...

I been reading all this shit and I agree with a lot of what y'all are saying. Especially Lil' Jay, K-Dogg and Overseer. Ever since I got 2001 it has been slowly inching closer and closer to the original Chronic with each listen. Granted, it will never have the importance or influence that the first one had, but in purely musical terms, it is damn close.
There is a huge difference, though. The Chronic was an album that I loved from day one, it had the type of songs that you just felt as soon as you heard them. It doesn't take a lot of work to like The Chronic, it's a very accessible record. In that respect, I actually think Doggystyle is the better album. But with 2001, the beats in general are much more complex, and the rhymes are more advanced (due mainly to Hittman's writing), making it harder to get into. But like Cube said, once it gets you, you can't get enough of it. And the fact that it's so complex makes it's replay value much higher than the original Chronic because you hear things you never noticed before almost every time you play it, and you don't know what's around every turn before you get there.
The sad fact is that most people don't want music that doesn't grab them from the first time they hear it. It takes a long time for a record like 2001 to get the universal respect it deserves (i.e. Paul's Boutique), but I think eventually this album will go down as a true classic, equally as good it's predecessor.
-
5 years from now, i dont think people will give Chronic 2001 .... therefore, i cant place it as a classic album. Doggystyle is still rememberd by everybody, the OG Chronic to .....
-
yeah great post Gabe, thats how I feel
