Cup winners offered new Euro plan

Quote
Uefa may introduce a play-off system between the cup holders in each of Europe's domestic leagues, with a Champions League place as the prize.

Under proposals being discussed, the winners of each country's main knockout competition would feature.

Uefa spokesman William Gaillard said: "We want to revitalise the cup competitions in each country which have suffered in recent years.

"Giving the cup winners one of these spots is something we will discuss."

Awarding the cup winner one of their country's automatic positions is also being tabled, but is likely to be seen as a step too far.

At present, cup winners qualify for the Uefa Cup.

And Gaillard added: "If the cup winner goes to the Champions League, then that third or fourth-placed team in the league goes to the Uefa Cup. There has to be some reality.

"But to be honest if the same team that finishes first, second or third in the league ends up winning the cup, then the place would go to the next team in the league."

Can you imagine a team from a lower division being in the CL tho?  I don't like this idea.

This is a stupid idea take for example this years fa cup.

if its man united v chelsea who goes through to this play off ? as man u and chelsea will already be in the champions league.

Do watford and then blackburn then play each other for a place. ?

What they dont seem to realise is that in most countrys its generally one of the teams who are already in the champions league that win the domestic cup competitions.

I would prefer they worked in the opposite direction and make the champions league a tournament of the champions of each country than this.

I like the idea. In Holland the cup dont really mean much. But i only think its a good idea of we get an extra place. Not 1 of the 2 we already have.

Its a nice idea, but it would be a very small tournament if they did that. So not really practical.
