i compiled this from a huge shortlist...see if y'all agree and if not give me some feedback....
1. Dr Dre - what can i say?...the mans on fire...2001 was a classic but his recent work has been equally impressive, im especially feelin that flute drenched joint with knocturnal right now.
2. Pete Rock - the release of 'Petestrumentals' has served as a timely reminder of the soul brother's musical genius
3. El P - some of you might not know who El Producto is.....well GET UP your probably still sleeping on him!!! the break up of his group company flow has alowed him the space to compile underground classics for cats like cannibal ox, cage, and (according to current rumours) pharoahe monch
4. Battlecat - everyday his cult following grows and theres a good reason why...BATTLECAT BEATS KNOCK!...real gangsta shit.
5. RZA - after a short break the rza rector is back with his new joint 'digital bullet'...musically this album is a wake up call to hip hoppers worldwide. imo rza's shit grows with every release he blesses...a real modern day mozart.
6. Dj Quick - like many dope producers of the moment (primo, warren g etc) quick has been kinda quiet for a minute...but its a credit to him that even when he hasnt just dropped something fresh his honey g funk shit still rings in my ears
7. Alchemist - true, he sold one beat to two people...but what a beat it was!lol. ive been an alchemist fan since he first came on the scene and seems to be stepping up his game all the time.
8. Earthtone III - aka Outkast, y'all heard stankonia right? and since then theyve been holding down the dungeon family strongly. big up
9. Kayne West - it has to be said, this guy has made the years most important hip hop release (thats 'The Blueprint' for y'all that didnt know) his own. he has a fresh style that appeals to almost all hip hop heads and his music is gritty and thought provoking...a rising star.
10. Necro - often Necro's homaphobic, sexist, violent, insanely politically incorrect lyrics overshadow his high standard of production but since moving a shitload of copies of hid lp 'i need drugs' over the net and lacing his brother's group Non Phixion this kid has earned props from beatsmiths of the highest caliber (namely primo and lord finesse)
honorable mentions...
Hi Tek - brings his tight brand of cincinatti funk to the game
diamond d - the original crate digger has had a quiet year
Neptunes - nobody can deny their influence over the past year although i personally think hey suck
Fred Wreck - a definate climber so long as he stays original
dj premiere - still the don but seemingly missing in action
jay dee- the man responsible for music by atcq, the roots, mos def, and slum village.....trying his level best to put the soul back in black music
timbaland- recent shit has been dope....including work with bubba sparxxx, missy, aaliyah, and jay z
nottz - criminally underated va producer who has worked with xzibit, busta rhymes and his own teamsta click (which includes bad seed and Krumbsnatcha)
i would also like to give a mention to both the cut chemist (of j5 fame) and madlib...two ill producers who just released a dope ass album together...
thats my opinions on the beat making scene at the moment....please post yours........

I dont know about the world Crem, but here is MY top ten:
1. RZA - I'll never put this man after anyone. He's always BEFORE everyone. A decade ahead of his time.
2. Dr. Dre - The perfection of Andre Young's work cant be questioned.
3. Pete Rock - the king of positive emotions
All others I'll put em in no particular order, they're all dope:
Hi-Tek
Brotha Lynch Hung
Erick Sermon
Battlecat
Daz Dillinger
Soopafly
DJ Quik
and there is a ton more
BTW, Earthtone III is called III becuz they are a three: two members of Outkast and David Sheats, aka Mr DJ.
And oh yeah Timbaland is a future hip hop head. Right there with RZA, Inspekta Deck, KLC etc
-
maybe i should have mentiond erik sermon...for that marvellous marvyn sample if nothing else...soopafly is dope too....imo daz aint all that right now
-
my top 5 is:
1. Dr. Dre
1. DJ Quik (yes thats a 1, right now hes level with the doctor IMO)
3. Flawless (wait til this Contraversy drops, you'll see why i think he's THAT dope!)
4. Daz (since he hooked up with Mike Dean hes been tighter than ever)
5. Battlecat (although some of his shit sounds similar he always comes with a heater. plus hes been doing it for years and has really been a west coast mainstay even before he blew up. much props)
honorable mentions:
Big Hutch
The Glove
Fred Wreck
DJ Slip
-
I would probably add Just Blaze to the honorable mention list. I think he did a good job on the blueprint.
-
3. El P - some of you might not know who El Producto is.....well GET UP your probably still sleeping on him!!! the break up of his group company flow has alowed him the space to compile underground classics for cats like cannibal ox, cage, and (according to current rumours) pharoahe monch
Damn I never even heard of him.......give me a name of a song he produced.

Most of the producers I favour have been listed above but I think an up and coming "G" funk producer has gots to be Damizza. There's not been alot from him, his most recent joint is "Where I wanna Be" the Shade Sheist joint wit Nate from his complitation "Damizza Presents...Where I Wanna Be..". Warren G's production blessed that complitation 2. There's alot of RnB joints on there but in all it's pretty tight. He's done some production on Nate's upcoming album "Music & Me" 2. He's defo reppin' the "G" funk sound I think. He ain't up there in the top 10 but he's pretty sharp.

1. Dr. Dre - This man brings the full package to the switch board. He knows how to arrange music & vocals perfectly. He's also the master of mixing a track. Dre is great with artists cause he knows how to direct them. He already knows what to do.
2. DJ Quik - 2nd to Dre, Quik's production is unique because he pulls his ideas from a wide range of music. He too uses live instruments to make his tracks authentic.
3. Battlecat
4. Fredwreck
5. Warren G
6. Mel-Man
7. Meech Wells
8. Scott Storch
9. Rockwilda
10. Timbaland
