Ahh, so many memories. Thanks God for the Ohio Players and their funky worm.
I discovered the delights on the whining G-funk synth on The Chronic, as I expect many people did, principally on 'Dre Day' and 'Deeez Nuts', but with hindsight Dre was using it even earlier on 'Alwayz Into Somethin''.
For me, it's the number one element of G-funk, even ahead of the farty sounding, 'Not Just Knee Deep' synth bassline. To this day, when someone dusts it off for that retro West Coast feel (Game's 'Cali Vacation' or the track Warren G and RBX did on 'Streets of LA') it brings a smile to my face.
There always seemed to be two types to me: there was the full-sounding, funkier whine that Dre made popular, but then came a thinner-sounding whistle, like on Thug Life's 'Cradle To The Grave', for example. I always went with the first to be fair.
Dre seemed to move away from it, but plenty of others picked it up. QDIII gave Cube some classic examples on the Lethal Injection album, for example.
So I thought I'd show some love to an old school but forever classic West Coast sound. Feel free to post your favourite examples of this and name drop any producers who gave that crucial element of G-funk some shine.

Props for a really nice thread man, I love that sound too, and I can easily say it's THE one that got me into Hip-Hop.Other that that, as you said, hearing it makes you feel good, nice thoughts are all round my head 8)

that "whine" is produced by a Moog synthesizer... just tah let ya know, word to eazy-e
and it's definitly appreciated... some songs that really overuse it (and thats a good thing) ;D:
Dre - "What's the Difference"
Westside Connection - "Gangsta Nation" (i remember reading that Fredwreck actually has a collection of Moog synthesizers and MiniMoog sunthesizers)
peace

Y'all talkin about this?
a wavelike function of time (t) with:
* peak deviation from center = A (aka amplitude)
* angular frequency \omega\, (radians per second)
* initial phase (t = 0) = θ
θ is also referred to as a phase shift. When the initial phase is non-zero, the entire waveform appears to be shifted in time by the amount θ/ω seconds. A negative value represents a delay, and a positive value represents a "head-start".

That whine can be made on any synth with basic features. The Moog got a thicker sound tho I know I still use it on my beats.

amen to this thread. that g-funk whine is one of the key sounds that got me ADDICTED to west coast rap. it is a classic sound, that to me, can't be beat by anything else in music today.
-
Yep, that sound is the reason I got into Hip-Hop as hard as I did.. fuckin' addicting.. someone should make a compilation with all songs that have a lot of moog in them!

Great thread. Def a major factor for me getting into West Coast rap in the early 90's. It's pretty much a given that if a song uses this element I'm going to like it. I don't care if I've heard it 100 times, I want to hear it 100 more. More songs should use it.
-
i just listented to the MAD CJ MAC, ALBUM, a must buy for any g-funk fan.
the rbl posse album is also good g funk, but cj mac one is better.
and yeah, all about uncle sams curse, foesums perfection, both lil half dead albums, twinz, of course chronic, and all that .

Great thread. A lot of classic tracks and albums have been mentioned already. Gotta love that classic g-funk sound. I don't care if it's played out, it will never get old to me. There's nothing better than throwing some Foesum and Twinz in the deck and just cruising with the windows down.
