Because it's not 1992 anymore. Everything in hip hop culture is a phase.

Exactly. I mean, imagine wearing fashions from the 80s nowadays

lol, yeah... there's been plenty of trends in gangsta rap... the tight jeans  and jacket with the jerry cerls?? NWA and CMW... all members looked the same...

and there was a time around '96 were it was popular to wear a "g-hat"... mack 10, spice 1 and mc eiht all had one...

"Al Davis, never paid us" - Ice Cube

peep's were getting beat down for that type of wear man, there was defo a dress code in Southern Cali
during the late 80's early 90's. it's not like today when you have everyone & their mama dressing "Hip-HOP"....lol
it was a look you had to be able to back up.

shit homie don't foget about the Nike "Cortez" bro...
and the "Flight's", those you really got jacked for...lol

Thats for sure, I remember back in 1988 and 1989 my mom wouldn't let me get Jordans or Flights... she was sure I was gonna get jacked for them.

I remeber news stories of kids getting thier asses beaten down for those 1989 jordans.

Anybody here remember the days, when it would be suicide to walk though a blood hood with British Knights on?

thats real talk.........all these youngsters dress like 50 cent or wear wit long ass white shirts that look like dresses nowadays......i graduated in 96' and the uniform back then was long football or baseball jerseys, wife beaters, or plaid short sleave button up shirts.....pretty much swap meet atire.......and size 50 levis, dickies, frsico bens, or ben davis.....with a crease of course.......i used rock locs on my forehead all the time, and man would i get sweated for it! got hit up all the time.......you couldnt have that attire and have a shaved head witout getting hit up on the daily......i wasnt claiming a neighborhood, but used to 'tag bang', which was the thing back then if you werent banging (eventually most tagging crews got jumped into neighborhoods anyway, or heads evolved from writing to straight banging.....most crews were affiliated wit a set in some way)..........outside of LA this probably sounds stupid......shit, it was stupid, im lucky i never got killed, i use to get blasted at almost everyweekend at these house parties.....been jumped a few times too.......but yes, times have changed alot....you can deffinately tell who's a gangsta and who aint nowadays, it aint that hard........its was more of a thin line back then......if you dressed 'black' or 'hip hop', and were latin, you got clowned for it.......nowadays its the cool thing

around here in whittier people look at taggers as wannabe gangsters.  Cus they claim their crew against other crews but when a real gangster hits them up they dont say their crew.

u can now tell gangster from tagger usually cus the gangsters wear the long white socks with their bald head and the tagger is more like a "baller".  He gots the spikey hair wit the new shoes and everything.

taggers are sometimes affiliated with gangsters but usually they aint got no real problems until the crew thinks they can just tag up their neighborhood and start hitting up people.

this is back in the early to mid 90's, even as late as 97'......back then we did dress like gangsters, and yeah, you could say that most crews were wanna be's, cuz they didnt full on bang......but believe me, their were crews back then that were straight banging over getting crossed out, fools getting blasted and everything, thats where the term 'tag banging' came from, it set apart the graffiti writers, who could peice and do burners, from the plain ol' tagger, who lived to cross fools out and dissrespect.....i could name crews from that era from where i live (the 818), that were pretty crazy but you wouldnt know who im talking about.......im sure the writers nowadays do look alot different....but back then the image was identicle to gangstas, believe me.........and i always claimed my crew whenever i got hit up.......most gangstas wouldnt give a shit cuz they looked at it like 'he's just sum punk tagger' althought sum would trip thinking i was afraid to claim the hood i was really from.....i got checked for this before.......and my crew did start to take on beef wit sum gangs over writing in their neighborhood, so shit did get dangerous for a minute, i got blasted at plenty of times........one things for sure, i never had new shoes or dressed like a baller! and i've been shaving my head since i was 15, so i damn sure didnt have spikey hair!.......times have changed..........

i believe u too.  Cus im only 17 so im barely going trough what u went trought during the 90's.
And i believe u about dressing all gangster cus i was looking at some of the pictures of my brother who is in his middle 20's right now and grew up here in L.A. around the 90's and he dressed all gangster too.

He had the Cortez's wit the high white socks and the dickies.  Im not sure if he banged or not cus he ended up getting deported and he only lived with us for a couple years.
But he was pretty crazy cus he was in juvie alot of his life and ended up getting shanked in El Salvador and hes always asking me about gangs here in Whittier.

my mom did tell me that he use to tag on walls but they dont tell me if he was in a gang or not and neither does he cus they dont want me getting into all of that stuff.
so i guess times have changed.

I remember wearing locs around '93, only $5 at your local convenience store.

Yeah I remember what you guys are saying. I remember getting hit up for having the wrong color on, or getting hit up for no reason at all, just because. Things were different back then. You didn't think about dressing a certain way unless you could back it up. If you wore ben davis, if you wore raiders and kings, you had to be down in order to sport that shit, otherwise you would be tested.
