Title: England out of Euro 2007 (Under 21s)
Post by: es-jay on June 20, 2007, 12:26:25 PM: listened to penalties on the radio at work. several of others gathered round a pair of headphones... bit gutted to be honest...

England exited the European Under-21 Championship after a dramatic penalty shoot-out semi-final defeat to Holland.
Anton Ferdinand's effort, which smacked against the bar, proved decisive as they lost 13-12 on spot-kicks.

Leroy Lita had put England ahead before half-time, holding off his marker before scoring with a left-foot shot.

Lita also hit the outside of the post with a free-kick but the Dutch equalised in the 89th minutes when Ryan Donk headed across for Maceo Rigters.

penalties were tense, that was all i really i caught, due to work. but yeh, it sounded like a great game. towards the end we "went to sleep" and let the dutch score.

Don't think he played, can't remember seeing him.

England were unlucky because of the injuries they picked up during the game, ended up playing with pretty much nine men for the whole of extra time. The Dutch had a few very promising looking players in their team, not least their Regi Blinker lookalike on the left wing, he put some great corners in that England were really struggling to deal with.

Happens all the time. You watch the Liverpool - Milan CL final from a few years back and watch Dudek's saves. Ridick. Especially the one from Pirlo.

What is the point of having the linesman there??

I thought he looked better on the left than he did when they moved him into the middle, don't think he has enough bite to be a Davids part two.

On the penalties I didn't even see a linesman stood there, seemed to be that the referee was making the decisions himself. I see no problem with goalkeepers diving forward, that is the only way you can stretch enough to meet most penalties, but taking a couple of steps forward as the player is running up to take the kick is wrong and should be regulated as it is part of the rules.

pens were so unorginized, some absolute storming pens though
