What Is Hip Hop?
Hip hop is not merely a sound or a clothing trend, it is a culture that emerged from the hearts and minds of young people living in inner city New York and LA yes Los Angeles also!! (pop locking and locking) in the late sixties and early seventies. It was born during a time when art and music programs were being cut from school budgets. It was conceived during a time of social displacement and hopelessness.
Hip hop was born in youth who had been pushed aside from government programs, and labeled insignificant from media conglomerates. It was in an environment plagued with drugs, violence and death that there would emerge a beacon of hope. This hope would illuminate the burrows of New York and activate local disenfranchised youth in los angeles to embrace a movement representing the principles of peace, love, unity and positive expression.
Beyond just the new sound that developed from the deejays, came the voice of the oppressed expressed through rap, as well as a new element of dance called breaking or b-boying, pop locking art and even a philosophy focused on individual success being rooted in community success. This culture has and is still influencing youth across the globe today! Its NOT and NEVER was about KILLING my BROWN and BLACK BROTHERS....
