If you were a famous movie star, would you travel anywhere without bodyguards?  Yes folks, that's right, the other 2 guys on his boat are likely only bodyguards, making all 5 of the women Jack's.  I like his basic "ho hum" attitude about it as well.  Here he is, 70, with 5 women, and he's basically just kicking back ignoring all of them.  He's looking at the one like "sit the fuck down, you trying to fall out of the boat?  Why are your arms out?"  Plus, that looks a lot like a beer in his hand.  Plus, he's not even TRYING to stay in shape.  Everybody knows, all work and no play make jack The Shining had a better writer.  It had better actors.  I like it much better.  Pulp Fiction is great though of course.  Eventually, it comes down to taste.

NIK

AFI= the American Film Institute
The Academy Awards= the oscars

together they = what's quality at the time (the Academy) and what's quality through out history (AFI)

both say Pulp Fiction > The Shining

rotten tomatoes.com is an overall grade of what critics through out history have said about movies

also looking the the user ratings pulp fiction got a 100%

pulp fiction : critics say 96%  the people say 100%
the shining:  critics say 85% the people say 50%

also you said it best , Pulp Fiction has a huge cult following.lol wow.

also i'd like to point out that many negative reviews of the film point out Stanley Kubrick's vision of the story. i disagree with this. i personally think he did a very good job with it, however, that is the one common thread in all the negative reviews. however with pulp fiction, quentin tarintino is praised like the second coming of christ for his job on pulp fiction, which you can't deny, it've very stylish, it brought back and reinvented cinema.  the shining was stylish, but apparently lacking something.  now lets go to the screenplay , no argument here the screenplay for pulp fiction is marvelous, historic and one of the all time greatest. the shining? the book was great, but the screenplay wasnsn't as great as the book it was like Jurassic Park...the book was better (apparetnly i havn't read jurassic park). now acting. in the shining you have jack, that kid, and shelly duvall. jack did a great job, that kid did a good job, shelly duvall and everyone else though.....were just kinda there , how can you say the acting was superior?  i got three words for you Samuel L Jackson!!!!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/v/snW3cM1KipQ

then you got john travolta in his ocar worthy performance, bruce willis in his exciting performance, uma thurman in her oscar worthy performance, ving rhames with a very good performance, christopher walkin with a legendary guest appearace, then the bread to this delicious sandwhich you got tim roth and amanda arquette!!! i mean good god damn!

from an unbias standpoint

pulp fiction is the better movie

more credibility from movie critics
more credibility from fans
better screen play
better acting
better directing
better editing

Well, that's my opinion. It's known that critics hate horror films and love cult films like "Pulp Fiction"...I can't think of ANY horror movie that hasn't recieved bad reviews. But "The Shining" is still an amazing film, arguabaly the greatest horror movie ever. And Jake refuses to acknowledge that alongside arguably the greatest actor ever in Niocholson, played Scatman Crothers, who won an award for best supporting actor for "The Shining"...Don't get me wrong. I think "Pul Fiction" is a great (yet overrated) film. But I just think "The Shining" is superior, and anyone who knows about film knows that Kubrick's style can't be denied...PeACe

IMO

Kubrick>Tarantino
Pulp Fiction>The Shining  (both films are high on my all time fav's though)

You also gotta take in to consideration that Pulp Fiction's impact in the film industry is huge.  Mostly all the new filmmakers cite Pulp Fiction as their favorite film of all time.  While the Shining is the greatest horror movie, Pulp Fiction has the luxury of being seen as the best postmodernist film.

i never said that the shining wasn't a great film, i'm just saying the shining pales in comparison when compared to pulp fiction. bother are classics, but Pulp Fiction>The Shining when you subtract all bias.

btw the shining never won or was nominated for an academy award, Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films....is what you're thining of. i don't know how that 'institute'  justifies the shining>pulp Fiction though

Quote
Well, that's my opinion. It's known that critics hate horror films and love cult films like "Pulp Fiction"

I'm just informing you that Pulp Fiction was getting great reviews before it reached "Cult" status it did not get those reviews because of it.  The point is it is no fact that the Shining is the more quality piece of film, what is a fact is that both films are seen as #1 or close to #1 in their own genre, horror for the Shining and Post-Modernist for Pulp Fiction.  I'm sure you can find Film Professors that also say Pulp Fiction is their personal favorite, especially the upcoming young film professors.  If the new generation of Filmmakers cite Pulp Fiction as their favorite, we gotta be damn sure there will be some film professors who feel the same.  You also have to give even more credit to Tarantino for reviving a genre with an original script.

It's known that critics hate horror films and love cult films like "Pulp Fiction"

This is time line of Pulp Fiction.

-Wins the Palme D'Or
-Buzz for the U.S. release
-Practically everybody that is involved with film in anyway loved it
-Oscars blah
-Cult Status

So critics didn't love Pulp Fiction because it was a cult film, that's just illogical.  You're wrong.  This isn't an opinion anymore, now that's a fact.

NIK here's a breakdown of what you basically said (along with trauma)

the shining had better actors

the shining had: Jack Nicholson, Shelly Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson.

Pulp Fiction had: John Travolta, Samuel L Jackson, uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth, Amanda plummer, Ving Rhames, Christopher Walken, Phil Lamar (Mad TV) ,and  Julia Sweeny (SNL)

actors: Pulp Fiction>>>>>>The Shining ,

total Score Pulp Fiction: 1 The Shining: 0

Director

even though Quentin Tarintino was praised like Jesus for his Film and Kubrick was given mixed reviews, i'll give Kubrick the point for his past work and i'll give quentin a point for his work specifically on his film here

Direcctor: Pulp Fiction=the Shining

total Score: Pulp Fiction 2, The Shining: 1

Script

Pulp Fiction's Screen Play is sold as a text book in Film schools has one countless awards including an oscar, and became the new standard in hollywood. The Shining was originally a classic book written by Stephen King , However , the screenplay by Kurbick and Diane Johnson received and sill receives critique for not being as good as the book. other reviews cite the strength of the shining is more in part to the style and use of music rather than the script.

Writing: Pulp Fiction>>>>>>The Shining

Total Score: Pulp Fiction 3, The SHining 1

Overall Opinion of movie from multiple sources

Pulp Fiction is consistantly reviewed in the top five of many critics' and movie buff buff public sites. it is also cited on AFI's top 100 lists. The Shining ranks on some of the same lists as Pulp Fiction however is always ranked lower if at all when Pulp Fiction is present.

Overall Opinion Of the moives form multiple sources: Pulp Fiction>>>>>>The SHining

Total Score: Pulp Fiction 4, The Shining 1

NIK  you cannot say that or shake a finger to the notion that Pulp Fiction is the superior piece of work. there is more evidence to support this claims than there is to disprove it. Convincingly.

Opinions are like ass holes, everyone has them. and if everyone's opinions are held in the same light...pulp Fiction is praised far more positively than The SHining.

all you have to say to all of this NIk is that "i personally like The Shining better" you cannot denote that The Shining is better because you like it more. when all bias is removed Pulp Fiction is still held as the better film .

i personally like Pulp Fiction Better than Citizen Kane, but fact of the matter is that Citizen Kane is the superior film, all bias removed.

Wow. Are you slow? Stephen King is the writer of the story. Stanley Kubrick wrote the screenplay. Kubrick made the movie how he envisioned it, so that's 2 great minds who came up with 1 amazing product. It's not the greatest adaptation? In who's opinion? Stephen King himself didn't like Kubrick's vision of "The Shining"... King produced his own version in 1997, but the 1980 version is still considered FAR superior, by cinema fans AND horror buffs...If you're comparing it to the book, no, it's not 100% the same, but as a movie, a Stanley Kubrick film, it is simply one of the greatests ever...

And yes, I did read the book...

Really? Because every film professor I've spoken with (and I've taken many film courses) has said that Kubrick owns Tarantino and that "Pulp Fiction" is great, but overrated. I honestly believe "The Shining" would get the nod over "Pulp Ficiton" in almost ANY film classroom in America...PeACe

wow you just gave credibility to my claim about the screen play argument, STEPHEN KING DIDN"T EVEN LIKE IT. lol like i said the shining is an exercise in style . the screen play was good at best.

and like Javii reiiterated. the GENERAL consensus of film critics , film professors, students, and the average fan AND authors of books say Pulp Fiction>The SHining.

the only person saying the shining> Pulp Fiction ...is you and these imaginary professors.

actually i own it on vhs and dvd. lol. i like the movie. but my point is. it's not half the film as pulp fiction.

you're basing all of your info on personal OPINIONS

while i'm basing mine on statistics and General/average Opinions.

from variety magazine off rottentomatoes.com

With everything to work with, director Stanley Kubrick has teamed with jumpy Jack Nicholson to destroy all that was so terrifying about Stephen King's bestseller.
In his book, King took a fundamental horror formula - an innocent family marooned in an evil dwelling with a grim history - and built layers of ingenious terror upon it. The father is gradually possessed by the demonic, desolate hotel.

With dad going mad, the only protection mother and child have is the boy's clairvoyance - his 'shining' - which allows him an innocent understanding and some ability to outmaneuver the devils. But Kubrick sees things his own way, throwing 90% of King's creation out.

The crazier Nicholson gets, the more idiotic he looks. Shelley Duvall transforms the warm sympathetic wife of the book into a simpering, semi-retarded hysteric.

[Version reviewed ran 146 mins. Kubrick cut pic soon after its premiere.]

(Color) Available on VHS, DVD. Extract of a review from 1980. Running time: 142 MIN.

The trappings are brilliant, but Kubrick ultimately loses the essence of the source material — and he's too good to expect anything less.

that is the common complaint by more than most reviewers and even the original writer.  the source material was good but the interpretation by kubrick wasn't as great.  the strength of the film is the style and the production value (the music by bela bartok, the visuals, ect.) that's what makes this film a film, not the screenplay, not the writing.  and even if you consider that GREAT it still PALES IN COMPARISON to pulp fiction, which is one of the greatest screenplays and most well written movies of all time.

stop trying to argue this point, this is like saying steve nash is a better scorer than kobe bryant. no.

To doucherag who doesn't understand opinions,

"The Shining" is considered a top 100 film by anyone who knows anything about films. Any list without "The Shining" is a joke. Now, you are somehow tryna make it seem like "The Shining" isn't a top-notch classic. For that, you should bang your head on the wall like this :stupid:...You can find bad reviews for ANY film, rag. Your punkass even uses Rottentomatoes to try and discredit "The Shining" when it got an 85%. I can do the same thing with "Pulp Fiction"...

There's cleverness at work...but Tarantino’s 154-minute film rambles with nihilist fantasy and pop in-jokes.
-Thomas Delapa, BOULDER WEEKLY

This fictional world, though rendered imaginatively, can't sustain the movie
-Marc Vincenti, Palo Alto Weekly

You see? Bad reviews, and it's not even a horror film, rag...You obviously don't know shit about "The Shining", considering I had to point out to you that Stephen King was against it. Then you all of a sudden tried using that in this argument, LOL. The point is, Stephen King acknowledged that it was great as a film, he just didn't believe the story stayed true to his novel, which takes nothing away from its cinematography...Please understand that you're just being a doucherag again by refusing to accept others opinions...Thank you.

It's called an EXAMPLE, Jake. Obviously, "Psycho" was nominated in 4 categories (though it wasn't nominated for best film, which it shoulda), but the point is, "The Shining" is a classic. it wouldn't be an argument because the two films are on the same playing field. i'd probably agree goodfellas was better because in a way it is. it paved the way for pulp fiction.

no duh it is, we're not arguing that

the point of the thread was the move the shining had better actors (i proved that wrong) , better writing (i proved that wrong) and better directing ( just so this doesn't drag on i'll give both equal credit)

That's where you become a stubborn, close-minded dickhead. In my VALID opinion, "The Shining" had the better writing and directing.

If I said "Goodfellas" was better than "Pulp Fiction", would you deny that?

it wouldn't be an argument because the two films are on the same playing field. i'd probably agree goodfellas was better because in a way it is. it paved the way for pulp fiction.

See, you're a fucking hypocrite. You say "Goodfellas" is better, yet it got the lower ratings and some bad reviews just like "The Shining" did. A prime example of why you're a dickhead, Jake.

The Steve Francis-Kobe Bryant comparisson was just embarassing on your behalf...

how so ? kubricks screenplay/writing of this film was about as strong as steve francis' scoring. Tarintinos screenplay/writing is about as strong as kobe's

Kobe doesn't hate the Lakers, he LOVES the Lakers, he hates incompetent fucks who are two-sided, sorta' like you.

lol if i was on the lakers i wouldn't asked to be traded. that's for sure. i must worship the lakers then if kobe loves them.

Your examples suck ass, get Kobe off your mind. :-\

""Psycho" never got nominated, what a horrible film! Alfred Hitchcock is a joke!"

...I was obviously being sarcastic. And no "Psycho" WASNT nominated for best film, so it's not "TOO FUNNY"...obviously it was nominated for other things, but that whole sentence was just an EXAMPLE.

lol quit lying , you got caught just admit it and move on, it's called DAMGE CONTROL, you'd look better if you just admit you were wrong here, lol.

so it's my VALID opinion lebron james is on the same level as kobe bryant, why do you play the 'i'ts my opinion role when you're losing an argument. yet when you think something you go around saying people don't know basketball, people don't watch games, ect. ect. when it's their VALID opinion. you're running scared here stop being hypocritical, either subside that pulp fiction is the better overall movie or start respecting other people's opinons like we're 'suppse' to for you.

ouch you shot yourself in the foot again....is this another 'example'?

lol actually goodfellas and pulp fiction got the same rating from rotten tomatoes, lol both got 96%. both got 5 stars from allmovie.com and both went 95 and 96 on AFI's 100 top movies. like i said they're both on the same playing field, overall though i'd say goodfellas is PROBABLY the better movie since pulp fiction took ALOT from goodfellas.

Oh, wait...I actually think "Pulp Fiction" is a better movie now, Jacob...

NOT

You're a joke, man. But what should I expect from someone who compares movies to basketball players... When it comes to movies, it's a matter of taste and preference, as opposed to basketball players, cuz then we're simply speaking about who gets it done. Get help, Jake.

36 people said Pulp Fiction , without hesitation

"oooh i love the shining, but i love the dance scene with John Travolta and Kill Bill lady, oooh what's her name, you know what i'm talking about, i'd say Pulp fiction, yeah." Cathy Peterson

"You know what man, The shining was a great role for Jack Nicholson, break out role even. But, you know what, the performance was bigger than the movie, it's one dimensional. I got to go with Pulp Fiction. There was so much for me to sink my teeth into. " Eric castillo

"Pulp Fiction. Best movie ever." Micha Reeves

" I saw The shining when it first came out, i really liked it, but i've only watched it like three times since. It doesn't have the same replay value as Pulp Fiction, i could watch that all day."  David Hernandez

okay so elaborate how the amount of claim garnished by fight club overrates this movie.

can you go into deeper detail than that, what exactly said about it overrates it?
