I was gonna post somethin about this. Is that even a voice box? It sounds like some computer editing he does to his voice. Its dope to me tho. He sounds completely different without it (listen to "On Bail" by Xzibit f/ T-Pain, Daz, The Game).

Mr. Pain is using a vocoder which simply modulates the sound of the overall signal from his microphone, whereas with a talkbox you'd have to use a tube in your mouth to inflect a more variable sound.

There's really no comparison between Troutman and T-Pain. Roger could serenade over a whole piece of creative and original music, whereas most any singer can produce that T-Pain sound using just a vocoder.

T-Pain was performing on Jay Leno a few nights ago, he didn't use a vocoder at all, you wouldn't know it was him without one if you had just heard it.

Dude is not bad!!
That vocoder does get annoying some times..but perhaps that's just his gimmick..a way to differentiate himself from other artist out there..

It's not a talk box or the vocoder, It's a relatively new plug-in that is used in Pro Tools, kinda like a futuristic vocoder.. which makes T-Pain fake as fuck for that.. he's pretty much achieved fame for having a different voice like the one people think he does.

Its not a talkbox or a vocoder, its computer pitch correction. And no I don't think he's trying to be like Roger, but copycatting or not, that guy makes HORRIBLE music. I don't like to say nobody dont got no talent, but him and akon both suck

^Props for the vid, "seeing is believing" comes to mind when I saw it.

But Roger Troutman & T-Pain shouldn't even be in the same sentence, at least Roger could sing without the talkbox & could play real instruments. I'm not knocking T-Pain's hustle because he has good hooks at times but, still.

My bad on the vocoder bit, didn't know he uses that antares plug.

Remember that annoying tune by Cher, 'Do you Believe?'

Used the same pitch correction method. The dude in that youtube video gives hope to everyone who can't sing

lmao FUNNY ASS VID

he used outboard gear because you cant modulate the sound wet as hes doing now with his voice as an instrument.. so hes using hardware, if u do software youll have LATENCY/DELAY on it..

It's all about marketing. The voice modulation is something different to this generation so it's easy to pass off as innovative. Plus the fact that he is reggaeton gives him an edge since that shit is hot again for some stupid reason.

T-Pain doesn't use the talkbox, and to compare him to Roger is just a slap in the face imo.

He uses something called Antares Autotune... a program which requires no effort to use - which is why alot of people are jumping on the trend now. What it's supposed to do is correct vocal notes if someone messes up, but T-Pain uses it on every single note. You can download it and try it yourself, so go crazy.

I don't hate T-Pain - I think he's actually dope when he tries, but he sounds better without the effect on his voice - and better when hes rapping and not singing.

Not to "defend" him like that....

But y'all are definitely showin bias, LMAO. For one, T-Pain's voice, style, and sound is NOTHING LIKE Roger's. Just because he uses a vocal effect that is obviously computerized does not mean he's trying to bite Roger. With that...how are you gonna knock him for his style, but let it be cool when DJ Quik, Battlecat, and every damn song on Pocos Pero Locos use Roger's EXACT same voicebox and style? Yeah, Roger was cool with Quik, Dre, and many of them...but he isn't even from the West, even though we claim him.

It's obvious that he can't sing...but if "anybody" can use his voice, then why isn't "anybody" else on 100 tracks? The thing with him is that he produces, writes, raps, and then does his voice box shit...and most of y'all don't know it, but he got signed from producing, raping, and writing BEFORE he started doin the voice box. I have been in school in his hometown, Tallahassee, since 2002, and he got big there from rapping with his group the Nappy Heads. So he is multi-talenetd period, and the hooks he does with the box are just something else he has on resume...but he can actually rap better than a lot of cats.

LOL...I mean I'm not his biggest fan like that...I just found everyone to be sounding too biased against him, and I had to call it.

^ which is why my Tallahassee people keep telling me of a young L.A. producer/dj that keeps walking around singing, "I'mma Buy A Drank..Ooooooh..." :)
