Much ado about nothing Posted: Friday, July 13, 2007 2:41 PM

David Beckham, a.k.a. Mr. Posh Spice, is going to sell jerseys and get on tabloid covers and fill countless online blogs and celebrity sites with gossip as meaningless as it is breathless about his house and cars and tattoos and glamorous wife.

He and his wife are celebrities; and in this country the fact that he plays soccer is the least part of his appeal. He’s not a guy who scores at a prodigious rate but is more of a playmaker, so the casual fan isn’t going to understand why this highly paid superstar isn’t banging balls into the net every other time down the field – or even every other game.

True soccer fans will understand what he does and put down their money to watch it. They’ll buy his jerseys and watch him on television. And already, he’s selling tickets; tickets to New York Red Bulls games can be had for $20 through the team’s Web site, but tickets to the Galaxy’s visit in August are going for $40 online and are mostly sold out.

But he’s not going to make soccer a major professional sport in the United States. The person has yet to be born who can do that.

I say this with no malice towards soccer, which most of the world considers to be God’s chosen sport. It’s not even an opinion. It’s a truth that has been demonstrated time and again for more than 30 years. Sports viewing habits have proved to be nearly impossible to change. Just as the NFL couldn’t sell American football in Europe, nobody is going to sell soccer in the United States.

This isn’t to say Beckham won’t help the MLS and U.S. soccer; he can’t avoid helping a sport that draws an average of 15,000 fans a game, about one-third of whom get free tickets. And those attendance figures are skewed by big crowds drawn to doubleheaders in which the main attraction is a friendly match between major international teams and the second game is an MLS match.

And this is more than 30 years after the New York Cosmos in the old North American Soccer League drew crowds of more than 70,000 to Giants Stadium when the greatest player in the history of the game, Pele, made soccer the hottest sport in town.

The NASL died in 1984. Major League Soccer, the current pro league, was born in 1996. It’s in no danger of collapsing and Beckham’s team, the Galaxy, was the first team in the league to turn a profit. It also leads the league in attendance with 27,000 per game in the Home Depot Center, a soccer-only stadium, in Carson, outside of Los Angeles.

So professional soccer is here to stay; it should even be able to survive Beckham’s salary – variously reported as either $5.5 million or $6.5 million a year – even though that salary is about 50 times the league average. For the record, Arena Football League players make just a little less than MLS players according to this 2006 survey.

So we’re talking about a league with 10,000 paying fans – on average – per game and an average annual salary of about $100,000.

Only one baseball team draws fewer than 15,000 fans a game – Tampa Bay, and their 14,000 a game probably represents more paying customers than the average MLS team draws. Even the NHL, whose television ratings approach negative numbers, has just seven teams that draw fewer than 15,000 a game. They, too, actually pay for their tickets.

When you count up total tickets, the disparity mounts. Baseball teams play 81 home games; hockey teams 41. An MLS team has 20 home games. And they give tickets away.

The Beckhams will fit very nicely into American pop culture, but David Beckham isn’t going to drive sports discussions in Los Angeles or anywhere else.

“I thought by now this would be a prime-time sports story. Instead, it is a better Perez Hilton story, the renowned blogger working overtime to feed its Hollywood appetite,” says Bill Plaschke of The L.A. Times. "It's more than soccer, it's bigger than sports," Hilton said. "It's David and Victoria, it's Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, it's Hollywood."

In other words, it’s not sports – at least not a sport that the bulk of Americans care about.

yea man.  kids here dont respect the athleticism that soccer requires.  when you ask them what a "one two" is theyll probably tell you the menu listings for the first 2 meals at mcdonalds.  sad shit here in the states.

It's getting pretty bad over here in Scotland too & in the U.K. as a whole.

Obesity in kids is way too common but I'm not sure if the fast-food chains are to blame. I think it's something to do with genetics and a little bit is down to parents/schools.

football will never be huge in usa because americans cant play sports where pace is a main factor. they can only play sports that have constant breaks (time outs for commercial brakes and beer and donut refills). endless pumping of iron will never create an "fit athlete".

a basketball match takes approx 2 hours to finish. each match is 48 min .... which basicly roughly means that you get to rest 1 min for each min you play... and that is IF you play 48min.. lets say that the average time for an average player is 20 min... thats means that he gets to rest 5 min for each min he plays.... a sport of pace?.. you gotta be kidding me.

i've played basketball... and my personal experience is that people play until they get tired, and then they sit and rest, because a tired player performs badly, and only a dum coach would be ignorant enough to let him stay on the field... am i totally wrong?

while in football, the rules and regulations doesnt allow free substitutions... but

You can't use that logic in streetball because you're constantly running and posting up, so that wins easily against a soccer match.

But you do have a point in the NBA, but what you don't understand is that basketball players constantly sprint and use agility.and more importantly post.Do you know how much energy it takes to play the post? You have to use every muscle in your body to keep fighting for that perfect spot. Of course they're gonna get tired and need rest.

sure... streetball is way tougher than NBA.. i completely agree.. but i was talking abou professional sports

and like you said: they get tired and need to rest, and they get to rest..
but in professional football, that opportunity doesnt exist, so how tired you may be, you still have to continue to run, drible, fight to keep your spot.

so for me, the natural outcome is obviously that football is tougher.

i do know for a fact that if you take a random instance of lets say 1 min of play, basketball will be tougher in most cases.  but absolutely not during the entire match. i know that nik and "real ukranian" have no idea of what im talking about, but i honestly think that you understand and that you agree with what i'm saying (sure, i may exaggerate when i say that basketball have no pace at all).

LMAO@your logic...Basketball is a sport in which you work out more of the anatomy. Your arms, your legs, running, jumping, quick changes of pace, muscling other players, etc...If you noticed, basketball players are a lot more in shape than soccer players. There's a reason for that. Of course there's stoppages in basketball, but mainly for fouls. The players would die from exhaustion without stoppages... You can't just stop action to substitute a player, you have to wait until there's a stoppage, and then you can substitute. Still, to say pace is not a main factor in basketball is a joke...PeACe

ever heard of time outs?.. it can happen 12 times during a match
NBA is so commercial-based, they're forcing time outs upon the home team, even if nobody wants it, just to be able to add commercials
basketball players are more muscular than football players since all they do is to lift weights. football players know that unnecessary muscles will hinder their pace, so they stay strong, but fit and agile.

off course you have to wait until stoppage before a substitution, but it's not like you have to wait long for that to happen... and you can substitute how many times you want. in football you play for 90 min and can make a total of three (3) substitutions. whats hard for you to get?

sports that requires alot of pace dont have athletes built like bodybuilders....
sports that have breaks to help the contestants to regain their energy and also, by having unlimited substitutions, being able to guarantee fresh players on the pitch CANT be considered being sports where pace is among the main factors.

surely it cant be THAT hard for you to grasp, can it?

i wont try to explain it for you any more, cause clearly you know nothing about football while I, having refereed over 600 basketball matches and played a few myself and at the same time being a hardcore football fan while playing matches regularly, should know quite a few things.

and off course 30 min of streetball is tougher than 30 min of nba. 30 min in streetball means 30 min effective play. 30 min in nba means 12 min play (a quarter) + 18 min of timeouts, breaks and other delays.

^^LOL. Try tellin' that to Smush Parker and all the other streetballers who tried making it in the NBA...NBA player ARE quick and agile...and more in shape than soccer players. I've played soccer in an organized league before. The tempo in basketball is much quicker, with pace switching constantly, and can go on for long periods with no breaks. Sorry, man, you might love soccer, but it is what it is...

Wing backs also cover a shit load of miles.  Just imagine Roberto Carlos in his prime.  Really the only two positions where I would say that there's not that much demanding than the others is the centre back and of course the goalie.  Everybody else though, it's tough work.

yup i usually have to play as a wing back for my club due to the formation we play, and its an incredibly tough position if your unfit or tired.. you have got to no when to make runs with the attack or just stay back

thats the english press, they are going back to try and ridicule beckham. They know he sells papers though, if i was beckham i dont think i ever would have forgiven the press for the way they treated him in 98. There a bunch of hypocrites, 8 years later they are giving him a standing ovation when he announces he is steeping down as captain.

Now they are slating his club, we all no LA Galaxy aint as good as Real Madrid, but he has made his choice.

playing midfield in soccer is one of the most demanding positions in all of sports.

thats just the truth.

true that the distance some players cover in one match is literally miles.

Yup me 2. nothing worse when you bust a lung 2 get up the other end of the park, all someone needs 2 do is play the ball 2 your feet and your idiot team mate gives possession away and you have 2 run all the fuckin way back 2 tackle. infact, why the fuck do i even play that position? Fuck it, next week im playing in goal.

It's called a british accent. And we can live with you not caring about Beckham, as we really don't care about Barry Bonds or Peyton Manning.

the thing i find really funny how only the few bad views are posted when most news station have good things to say football is big everywhere except the us deny it now but that will change

and chelsea only beat galaxy  1 nil to a 27 k sell out mls clubs are now atleast making money instead of losing it so that will improve in each area

and finally people who say people are fags for liking or playing a certain sport arent real quite simply there the fags

Came on for the last quarter of an hour, looking at the videos on Youtube, he got a great reception. I was laughing big style about the proper American announcer introduction he got, seemed surreal hearing it in a football match: Dayyyyyvid Beckkkkkkkhammmm.
