Platinum record-selling Houston rapper Lil' Flip was charged Saturday with credit card abuse in connection with the purchase of an airline ticket.
The 26-year-old rapper, whose real name is Wesley Eric Weston Jr., turned himself in on the felony charge around 2:30 p.m. Saturday and was released shortly thereafter on a $2,000 bond.
Weston, known as the "freestyle king" for his ability to improvise, is accused of buying a $671 Southwest Airlines ticket to Baltimore from Houston on June 8 with an American Express card held by a man identified as Jordan Salinger, according to a court document. Salinger, whose relationship, if any, with Weston is unknown, told authorities he did not authorize the purchase, according to the document.
Weston told authorities the ticket was purchased by a Kevin Frank. Frank told officials he neither made the purchase nor knew Weston, according to the court record, which also indicates a man identified only as Wesley bought the ticket by phone an hour before takeoff.
Supporters of Weston, who according to county records owns an $800,000 home in the Twins Lakes Subdivision in northwest Harris County, were quick to defend him.
"It has more to do with people around him, and not the man himself. The man is not a criminal; he's never been in trouble," said community activist Quanell X.
Quanell described the incident as a "small, slight situation" that "will be worked out."
Weston, a Houston native discovered a few years ago by well-known artist DJ Screw, launched his career selling tapes from the trunk of his car on Houston's streets, according to an entry in Wikipedia. His album, The Leprechaun, which featured the hit single I Can Do That, sold more than 100,000 copies.
He released his second album, Undaground Legend, at the age of 21.
In March 2002, Weston was shot in the chest, causing a punctured lung, while leaving a recording studio.
Weston is due in court Monday.

MediaTakeOut.com has learned that Houston rapper Lil Flip was arrested for credit card fraud. With the charges filed, police are alleging that Lil Flip used a stolen credit card to purchase hundreds of dollars of merchandise.
And what "merchandise" was charged to the stolen credit card. Sources tell MediaTakeOut.com that the stolen cards were used to purchase gasoline, miscellaneous items of clothing and internet pornography.
Right now, it's not clear whether the pornography depicted gay or straight acts.
