Post by: jsimon on July 31, 2007, 11:05:07 AM
I'm sure everybody has been on the web or seen the show by now. In Case you haven't MTV has put together a top ten list of the hottest MC's in the Game and here is the list:
1. Lil Wayne | 2. T.I. | 3. The Game |
4. Andre 3000 | 5. Kanye West
6. Young Jeezy | 7. Jay-Z | 8. 50 Cent |
9. Common | 10. Jim Jones

DO YOU AGREE WITH THE LIST?

"Chamillionaire needs to be on that list." ??? What makes him hot right now? So who comes off the list for Chamillionaire? Jim Jones?  :eh: I can't see it.

Jay-Z or the Game can easily come off that list...DA undersold and there's going to be much less anticipation for Game's next album without the whole "will he work with or without Dre" appeal. Chamillionaire on the other hand has been droppin knowledge lately, is coming off a successful album, and I think he'll have one of the most anticipated releases. As for Jay-Z...sure kingdom Come went Plat..but it wasnt received well critically and the sales of the album were down compared to his previous releases, plus you can see him losing his fanbase a little. He's at the point in his career where we can expect to see a downard trend in album sales..and that doesnt constitute a "hot" MC.

Well I don't agree with that list!
But haing seen the attention Lil wayne & T.I get , it's no wonder they are listed there as the hottest rappers out there!
Which they are.
I'm not a big fan of both, but i have to look at it objectively, with what is happening currently in the hip hop game, them two aforementioned artsit are hot!

The Game, will it's nice to see him listed there!!

Repping the West!
I would have laighed if 50 was not incldued i there! I guess he is Hot cuz of perhaps his investment in that Deal,or becuase he has an album coming i don't know..Guess when his album dropps, we'll see if he really deserves that Spot!!

As for who i would like to be on that List??

mmm..Nah i'll pass on that!!

Yea, how Chamillionaire isn't on that list is beyond me ???

his last album outsold that of the game, common, jim jones, and maybe even jeezy

I don't agree with that list at all.  Still don't see the hype about Wayne, Jim Jones is absolute trash, and even though Andre 3000 is a great MC, what has he dropped recently aside from a few guest appearances that would make him one of the hottest "in the game right now?"  What about Bun B and Pimp C?  Both of them absolutely deserve to be on that list.

I guess this is hard to measure. Because from what I read some of the responses view album sales as being hot. There is no problem with seeing it that way, but I don't think that it holds a lot of weight in terms of: skills (lyrics, word play, rhyme patterns, flow), swag (trendsetting, confidence, style, originality, believability). Lil Wayne put the Carter 2 in Dec of O5, his first CD without Mannie Fresh, and it was cool (I thought it woulda been better because he was forced to work with other producers). But he had momentum leading up to the that album because of the mixtapes. And he got a lot better after the album with more mixtapes and guest apperances. I agree with number 1. But spots 2-10 are anybody's guess. I still can't put Chamillionaire on the list I just don't think he is more relevant that the others.

Oh there is no question about that....I was making fun of MTV riding the mainstream crowd by still picking Eminem as a "hot" artist when he's been nowhere to be seen for a while.

I'm not a huge Eminem fan by any means....BUT Eminem from 98-03 could spit as well as anyone out right now....doesnt matter if he's white, black, or pink. I would never hate on the mans skills on the mic and I hate when people do.

I love pretty much all the guys on your list..but i think we're confusing the "Best/favorite" with "Hottest". Snoop, MC Eight, WC and Kurupt have all been part of legendary albums, but besides Snoop..these cats havent been hot by any means. Adn even Snoop can be nowhere near this list, TBCT was his FIRST album that didnt go Plat, sales wise it was a big dissappointment considering his name. And Kurupt is actually the complete opposite of "hot"...the recent DPG albums have all BOMBED sales wise, and Kurupts depressing decline as an mc is as big a reason as anything.

However you can make a good case for Cube bein on this list, in fact he has a better case than guys like Jay-Z and Game because LNCL not only faired well critically and was considered a bounceback album from Cube, but it went Gold and sold over 600,000 on an Independant. It was a huge powermove and was a big time success, so he actually can be on the list. WC has been droppin heat, but until Guilty by Affiliation drops we wont know whether he's "hot".

lol who cares about sales? for me, a rapper ain't hot when he sells some units. all the rappers on my list did some dope shit within the las 1-2 years, that's why they are on my list. I left out guys like Too $hort, Warren G, Tray Dee or DJ Quik for example, because they didn't release dope shit in the near past or didn't release something at all. But to me, the guys on my list did that. Eiht for example dropped 4 albums last year and they were all mor or less cool. "Affiliated" is on of his best records seriously.
Oh, and if sales do matter to you, then peep Mistah F.A.B.'s game, he made it into the Billboard 200 with his indi-released "Da Baydestrian". He sold like 5000 the first week, a good number for a bay artist these days. I was happy when I heard that because Fabby is a monster.

Well...the list was called the "Hottest". They said it a few times...."this isn't about who's the best of all time, and it's not about who's the best...but who's the hottest"...and hot doesn't represent what's best. As far as the criteria they based it on, I can almost agree with it to an extent. Even though Nas is obviously a much better rapper than Jim Jones, and Nas' worst album is still better than anything Jim has done, he is more "hot" overall as far as having the image, style, being on different mixtapes and remixes, and all that. The list wasn't even based on sales alone.

I didn't think Game would rank that high, but he is really the only West Coast rapper who's "hot" in a mainstream sense. However, most of us here could care less about who or what is "Hot" because half of what's hot today will most definitely be cold in 2-3 years.

The way I see it..the easy way to determine an artist's "hotness" is by comparing the profile the artist has today vs. what he had this time last year or 2 years ago. If he's getting more talk now, then he's hot...if he's getting less talk, or buzz, then he's not.

That way we're comparing the rapper to the status he previously had, cause imo comparing a 2 year vet to a 15 year vet is unfair. Obviously a "cold" Snoop /Jay-Z will probably still be talked about more and have more buzz than a an up and coming mc but that doesnt mean they're "hotter". Anyway, thats how I see it..but I guess this can be interpreted a thousand ways.

yeah, like I said, "hot" means for me, that the artist had a dope record within the last 1-2 years. I give a fuck about that mainstream crap, people always talk about wack shit, just look at the charts, you can't find 5 dope songs in the top100 today, you just can't. So for me, the MTV list ain't hot, cause these rappers ain't hot for me. that's the way I see it, you know?

MTV's list is pretty weird, no matter how you interpret "hot" - who's got the buzz right now or who've dropped heat rocks in the past year or so.

Weezy is irrelevant to me. How he's made it so big I'll never know.

T.I. is rightfully there. I don't have dude's records, but I'll admit that he's dropped some decent joints with "King" and now "T.I. vs. T.I.P.".

The Game - well, DA was a hot record, but it's been out a long time now. Certainly shouldn't be so high on that account. I don't know of any buzz for his new records either.

Andre - he's got those recent guest appearances going for him, but there isn't really any buzz for him, is there?

Kanye - Should be higher on the list. He's got a buzz going for his upcoming album AND he's dropped two singles that have been generally well recieved by the audience.

The rest are pretty much this: meh. Although I gotta say that 50's been talked about somewhat recently, but mainly about how much his singles have sucked and how he's been pushed back.

On my list I'd have Kanye  and T.I. (let's face it, he IS hot right now, even though I personally don't care for him) out of those dudes. Then I'd put WC, Bishop Lamont and O. Cruz on there, but I guess their buzz is more or less limited to the west coast and its fans like me.
