saw this in the sunday paper and found it rather hilarious, wish i could get the picture...
An ILLEGAL immigrant tried to get into Britain... by hiding behind the dashboard of a Renault Espace people carrier.
Customs officers discovered the Chinese woman crammed into the tiny space after a sniffer dog started barking at the vehicle. Lifting off the plastic dashboard, they found the woman lying on her side with her head to the left of the steering wheel. Her legs went into a hollowed-out area in front of the passenger's foot area.
Investigators say that two Romanian men in the car, who were both arrested, would have been paid at least £5,000 for the woman's safe passage across the Channel from France. Police believe the young woman - who was immediately deported back to France - would have been destined for the sex trade.
Customs officials at Dover Eastern Docks picked on the Espace because they thought it was strange that two men were driving a people carrier.
What they found has been ranked as one of the most bizarre attempts to smuggle a human being into the UK that they have ever seen.
One customs officer said: "We have to look out for vehicles that look vaguely suspicious and check them.
"Two Romanian guys in a people carrier - a vehicle normally used by families - started a few bells ringing so the officers thought they would check it out. When the dog started going crazy we obviously took a closer look.
"The woman, who wasn't even that small, was wedged into a specially hollowed-out space behind the dashboard. She must have been in an amazing amount of discomfort as she literally couldn't move. She was crammed in like a sardine.
"It's one of the most audacious attempts to smuggle somebody into the country that we have ever seen."
The car had travelled on a ferry from Calais before being stopped by customs at Dover. The woman would have been smuggled across Europe from Turkey.
The number of people smuggled into the country stowed away in cars and lorries has fallen dramatically in recent years after scanners were introduced at ports.
But immigration officials and customs still come across crafty attempts to get people into the UK.
The officer added: "We have seen people stowed away in petrol tanks and all kinds of false panels but never like this.
"It's certainly an ingenious way as most people would not think that hiding a person in a dashboard would even be possible. It shows the desperate lengths that some people will go to to get here."
