Title: West Coast songs that were biggest outside of California
Post by: R-Tistic on September 10, 2007, 10:45:50 AM
What songs from the West, particularly from California, do you think or know were biggest outside of California? Whether it was in the clubs, on radio, or just out there in the streets?

I have noticed that "Wrong Idea" from Snoop/Bad Azz was a LOT bigger outside of CA, especially in Florida. In my first year of school from 2002-2003, they would play this song at almost EVERY club...but you'd never hear anything else from CA that was a lot bigger than this song. Back home, you'd definitely hear "I luv it" "G'd up" "How we get down" "Bad intentions" and a lot of other songs way before you heard "Wrong Idea".

"Down for my n'ggas" has always been huge out here, and you still hear it at half the parties and clubs you go to. I don't know if it blew up bigger when C-Murder released it on his album as a single in 2000-2001, but that song has always got a lot of play here.

I haven't heard it first hand, but my homegirl who goes to school in Daytona Beach told me that Joystick is still a major song there, and that they even have their own dance to it. It got played at some parties in L.A. that I went to, and I might have heard it on radio a few times...but it was never anything major.

I saw someone on here mention that Sly Boogy "It's nothin" got played a lot in the clubs somewhere such as in Europe.

In Montreal westcoast music aint that big, they play the Dre hits when they come out, youll hear cube put youre bakc into it but its been reaaaaal quiet. Of course you hear Snoop's pop hip hop but thats it.

I did go to a 90s jam 2 weeks ago andthe bumped tons of westcast like Dopeman, summertime in the lbc and regulate of course they played all the classics as well.

A recent song that gets alot of play I noticed is Blow The Whistle by Too $hort. I hear that all the time out here and in Arizona.

Comparing back home to MN, I remember off Last Meal, that Lay Low being huge our here. The main songs that stick out right now as being big are One Blood, actually a couple of Capon-E songs, and I remember Lil'Rob with that Summertime track a couple of years back. Of course Capon-E and Lil'Rob get tons of play in the summer but none in the winter. Any Snoop single of course, and Cube was pretty big with Why We Thugs.

Yeah, they played the "Blow The Whistle" video on Germany TV. "Drop It Like It's Hot" and "Mean Muggin" and "X" were hits here too and I can hear "Regulate" and "Who Am I" on the radio sometimes.

I remember beeing in Houston around the time Tha Eastsidaz first album came out, everybody LOVED "Got Beef", but it didn't seem to popular in California.

The same can be said for "How We Do" and "Hate it or Love it" by Game.

Maybe. But I don't think typical West Coast fans enjoyed it as much as they did "Westside Story" or "Higher".

Gangsta's Paradise is (to this very day) the biggest selling single EVER in Norway... It was #1 for like 15 weeks or so...

LOL...I'd say the Dubcc TRUE West Coast fans may have liked those most, but the average heads in CA went harder for the singles.

yeah Down for my n'ggas definitely, it's played at most college parties or clubs here in TX, but as you pointed out, it has more to do with C-murder releasing it. Also from time to time in the clubs I hear 2 of amerikaz most wanted.
Actually a lot of clubs here in Dallas have "a west coast minute" (its more like 5-10 min) during which they play some of the west coast classics like nuthin but a g thang, gin n juice, etc...

i've heard songs by Mac Dre, Westside Connection, Keak Da Sneak, and that "Two Stepping" track by Hot Dollar in many clubs in Mexico, along with some othere classics ( dres, snoops, cubes).

The funny thing is that if you ask the djs if they kno who's song is that, they don't kno shit, haha!
