Title: DUBCNN staff recommendation: PACIFIC DIVISION (Links and full mixtape inside)
Post by: We Fly High on September 20, 2007, 06:47:19 PM
As a staff member of dubcnn, i feel like it is my duty to hip you guys to some shit thats really making some noise in the Los Angeles area. These guys are constantly doing shows out here in LA, probably performing more than any other up and coming act out here by far. These guys aren't on that gangsta rap tip, or on some borin underground shit. But they're just some really fresh kids, havin fun with their music. Pacific Division is currently my favorite group on the west coast BY FAR, its a definite change from what you guys are probably used to hearing from the coast. So i uploaded a few zshare preview links, and i even uploaded their entire "Blend Tape", which has been in my constant rotation for the past 2 years since it came out. They were probably like 19-20 when they put out this CD. One of the best goddamn mixtapes i've heard... so check it out, and let me know what y'all think. This is for the real hip hop heads... , they do a lot of blends over classic tracks (passin me by, bonita applebaum, blackstar - definition, 93 till infinity, b.i.g. - unbelievable, etc)

*Swiff D is also their inhouse producer, he just did a track on that new Dipset CD, and also did 'Perfect Beat' on TK's "Eardrum", done production for Snoop, Nas, Redman, Tyrese, Murs, Rick Ross, Jayo Felony "1,2,3", Styles P, DPG "Dont Sweat It", B. Valentino, etc).

"No Homo" was originally just supposed to be that one verse, but the response to it so far has been overwhelming, that theyve decided to record two more verses, and also shoot a video this weekend. i will let you know as soon as its done and ready.

and this aint spam either. its just too bad some of you guys dont pay attention and miss out on good music. at like 21,22 years old these guys have already received praises from Pharrell, DJ Khalil, ?uestlove, Snoop. what more validation do you need?

I'm glad that someone finally recognized good music... this mixtape has been in steady rotation for 2 years for me. I dont really like to listen to Blends especially when its over classic beats, but Pac Div is able to flip the song into their OWN, which not many rappers can do, and therefore these old songs all of a sudden take on a new life.

For those who attend hip hop shows in LA, they might sound pretty familiar to you . They're literally performing shows once or twice a week in all sorts of venues in LA, just grindin. They just did the Vapors Magazine/Brooklyn Projects show at The Roxy with The Clipse, they just did the Unity show with Dilated/La coka/Self Scientific/etc. They performed another time at the Roxy with J. davey, they do shows with Slum Village, Blu, Lupe Fiasco, Joell Ortiz, etc.. They're out there on the show circuit real heavy. A lot more than any of these new west cats. Its the truth; I never see Bishop Lamont performing anywhere, I never see Crooked I performing anywhere, I never see Glasses Malone performing anywhere, I never see Ya Boy performing anywhere, I never see "(insert name)" performing anywhere. and I stay going to shows all the time. A lot of rappers dont even exist outside the internet. plain and simple. ask anyone.

i dont really bother listening to any of these new gangsta rappers anymore. For the most part, none of these guys are bringing anything new or refreshing to the game (BORING!), and 90% of the time they cant even spit that well. None of them have any identity, or be talking about anything. You listen to their song, and you cant tell a single thing about them, other than they slang drugs and bang bang. woopty woop. People can actually RELATE to the topics that Pac Div rap about on an everyday level. .

Pac Div passed their cd to ?uestlove(The Roots) out in Amoebas, and ?uest called them the very next day, leavin a 15 min voicemail, givin them the official stamp. I was on the phone with one of the PD guys the other day, when through a turn of events, Pharrell was on a 3-way call with us, and basically just talked to one of the guys for like 10 minutes straight just givin them props. They're also gettin some beats from Khalil, and Nottz.

but props to Beatz for taking the time out to listen to the Blend Tape. I appreciate it man. More people on this board need to be schooled on some good music. As long as people just give the mixtape one chance, i guarantee they'll be hooked. I havent met one person who has heard this mixtape and hasnt liked it.

fasho.. are you pretty familiar with Pac and Blu's music, or been to any of their shows? Its just the evolution of the LA scene right now. theres two sides to it, theres the gangsta side where you'll find people like Roccett, Crooked I, Glasses, etc.. and then you have the side thats actually making progressive new sounding music, like J Davey, Pac Div, Blu & Exile, etc... The latter scene is definitely picking up more steam, and getting A LOT more critic's attentions, and i think within a matter of time, they'll be the new sound of LA.

Yeah Pacific Division are a hot group, sooner or later they'll get their props. But it's a shame people sleep on cats like Pacific Division, Custom Made, THX & his artists, La Coka Nostra, Dilated Peoples, Blu & Exile, Murs, Casual & the Hieroglyphics, Cali Agents, Strong Arm Steady, I can go on & on & on... 8)

^Yes. I hope west coast HIP HOP gets a chance to shine too, especially when Detox or Bishop or whoever has a real buzzing single drops. Then for every Roccett or Problem or Glasses Malone we would have a Casual or Prime or Chace Infinite or whoever else wants to represent. If that happens, no one can box the West Coast as just being "gangsta rap" and people would be more interested in what we bring out.
