A police baton -- considered a deadly weapon -- was found in the rapper's luggage last year at John Wayne Airport. He must serve 160 hours of community service and three years' informal probation.
Rap singer and actor Snoop Dogg was sentenced today to three years' informal probation and ordered to serve 160 hours of community service after agreeing to plead guilty to carrying a police baton in his carry-on luggage while boarding a plane at John Wayne Airport last year.
Under the deal, he cannot work with anti-gang or his youth football programs to fulfill his community service obligation because Orange County prosecutors did not want him to be able to do something he enjoys or to be "glorified in the eyes of children," said Deputy Dist. Atty. Andre Manssourian.
The artist, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, also agreed to donate $10,000 to an Orange County charity that helps troubled children and to pay more than $1,000 in fines and court fees.
His attorney, Donald Etra, did not join in the guilty plea to the felony charge -- possession of a deadly weapon -- because he said he was prepared to prove that the baton had been a prop in a South African show that Snoop performed in months earlier, a defense they have maintained since his arrest.
The deal was struck on the same day a preliminary hearing was to begin to determine if there was enough evidence to bring Snoop to trial.
Etra said his client simply wanted to put the case behind him and focus on his career. Etra and Manssourian said the term that closed the deal was proposed by the judge: that the felony count could be reduced to a misdemeanor after a year if Snoop does not break the law or violate conditions of his probation.

That's kinda weird that they didn't allow him to work on anti-gang programs to fulfill the probation. I kinda get the football league thing - 'cause he does that anyway, with or without probation.
But I'm sure he's not sweating it. He'll come up with some other charity and work on that.

I think what they mean is that he can't use his anit-gang/youth football programs to count towards his community service hours. They're not saying he can't do those anymore, just that he has to do something else to fulfill his community service.
