See usually when someone makes a top 5 rappers of all time list they get real anal about it...no homo. They go strictly off how lyrical those artist were (which is why the typical list is: 2Pac, Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem). But if you think about it, NO rapper has been more consistant than Snoop. I may not always agree with his makeovers, but I gotta give him credit, dude knows how to reinvent himself and stay relevant to the general public. LL has been in the game longer, but in between albums he doesn't release shiet. Cube is in my opinion THE greatest of all time, but he's in that same boat as LL. Jay-Z is overrated. Nas is amazing but he can't do it at all angles like Snoop. Eminem is too gimmicky. And I know it sounds fucked up, but Biggie wasn't alive long enough to be on that list, I mean a 3 year career and 2 albums doesn't cut it for me.
8 solo albums (Doggystyle, Tha Doggfather, Da Game is to Be Sold..., No Limit Top Dogg, Tha Last Meal, Paid the Cost, R&G, Blue Carpet Treatment), 3 group albums (Tha Eastsidaz, Duces N Trazyz, 213), mixtapes (Welcome 2 Da Chuuuch series), countless guest appearances on soundtracks, compilations, mixtapes and albums by other artist, stole the show on "The Chronic", and made a name for artist such as Daz, Kurupt, Warren G, Nate Dogg, Xzibit, Tha Eastsidaz. Face it - the man is top 5.
Top 5 in random order: Snoop, Cube, Nas, Andre 3000, 2Pac
-
I don't think Snoop has dropped a dope album since Last Meal
-
I don't think Snoop has dropped a dope album since Last Meal
to a westcoast purist, even i msyelf havent bought one of his records since the last meal but i must admit, he's had more commercial succes since the days of doggysytle dropping songs like beautiful and drop it lke its hot.
-
Actually consistentcy has been something lacking on Snoop's albums. Later in his career he has tried to cater to SO MANY sounds and people. But definitely you have to put him up there with the all time greats.
-
i wouldn't say top 5 overall ,but his flow is one of the greatest ever......i mean when he wants to rip a track, it sounds so dope, even if he's saying nothing (ie. think about it of TBCT)
-
yeah he is somewhere close to my top 5
-
agree on how he reinvents himself.. he's like the hip hop madonna
-
if you talk about superstar power and his abilities to stay on top for 15 years , I agree ... but when it comes to music HELL NO ... dude has released too much inconsistent solos to be considered top 5, let alone top 10.... and as much as I'm a Snoop fan , he doesn't reinvent himself , he just worked through the years with the artists who were superhot (no homo) at a certain moment ( Master P, Pharell) ... though there is no doubt he's a fucking legend, the most famous rapper around the world for a while and has been on many classics ....
by the way about Jay being overrated , well you'll see the same comments about Snoop on EastCoast forums ... they both have been the main rappers on the spotlight for each side and both have the same pb : quantity over quality .... right now Snoop is way overrated by the WC fans, Jay is way overrated by the Eastcoast fans
-
Im a huge snoop fan but i have to say no way, he is way too inconsistant.
-
id say near , in top 10 for sure. dude is a hip hop icon.
-
easily top five IMO. Altho he does have a collection of sub-par tracks hes put out, Snoop easily has the biggest catologue of material of all time. You go song for song, hit for hit with any other rapper and Snoop would be at the top.
-
:-\
-
agree on how he reinvents himself.. he's like the hip hop madonna
Just wondering. Do you now what programs/plug ins are in dres monitor? (in your Picture)
-
He cant get in my top 5 but he can get on my TOP 10 OR 15
-
snoop is definitely up there...he sure is the most recognizable name in hip-hop of all time IMO
-
Just based on his track record and how well known he is, hes top 10.
-
top 50 maybe MAYBE 8)
-
Top 5, in order...
1. Rakim
2. 2Pac
3. Nas
4. Ice Cube
5. Notorious B.I.G.
Jay-Z, Snoop, Andre, they are all top 25, but this top 5 IMO, no one can fuck with.
-
I know that some people "decided they hated him" around 2002-2004 but I have enjoyed at least 10-15 tracks on every solo album he has dropped since 1994. (Not including Sold not Told)
I started liking Snoop around 1993 and I didn't decide "he sucks" just because he tried different styles and directions later on.
Even if R and G was "POP" or "mainstream" that does mean it sucks.
I LIKE gangsta shit but even I enjoyed a lot of songs on R and G.
He is still a household name after 15 years and is probably the most well known rapper in the WORLD.
I'll give him top 5. 8)

The most visible plug-in in the picture is Spectrasonics Trilogy.
http://www.spectrasonics.net/instruments/trilogy.html
Its a bass module.
The others are a combination of giga studio and RTAS plug-ins.

Without a doubt an Icon... who else has appeared along side Lee Iococca?

LOL, styles has a point, not many can say that :D

I dont know...are talkin "Star Status" or Catologue and legacy as an MC? As a hip hop star, he's definetely top 5...no question. As far as his albums and his legacy on the mic, I would say top 10-15.
Based off of catalogue/records etc ...:
Obvious MCs ahead of Snoop
Cube
Pac
Nas
KRS
Scarface
MCs ahead of Snoop, but debateable
Rakim
Biggie
Jay
Eminem
So I have him right around the 10 spot, which seems fair.

I disagree with the order, but the list is good except take Biggie out and replace him with KRS. Waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many people sleep on KRS, dude has arguably the best catologue in hip hop, he's right there with Cube imo.
-
Yeah I can think of at least 5 rappers with a better catalog then Snoop. Now icon status pushes him ahead of alot of people but str8 music top 5? No.

I highlighted Eminem's name. Theres no way in hell I can ever consider him better than Snoop, even when Snoop is at his worse. Eminem sacrificed the dignity of his music, himself, and his family just to sell the way he did. He's either crying about how horrible his mother was or dressing up like a female screaming "just lose it uh uh uh uh uh".
Doggystyle > Eminem's entire career.
Jay-Z isn't worthy of being on that list either. "Reasonable Doubt" was crack. After that he didn't release another good album till "The Black Album". "Blueprint 2" had a lot of good material but too many fillers.
Biggie's 3 year career isn't worthy of being compared to Snoop's so I'll leave that one alone.
-
dogystyle>eminems career.........there i have no arguement with you......
best flow in hiphop......snoop has GOAT status as far as im concerned....
reinventing himself and knowing how to make smash hits.......again argueably the best
making albums....whether his albums come off dope or not, he no doubt know how to make them and they are always different unlike eminem...
oh and about him working with neptunes....to diss him for that is retarded....those niggaz are some of the best in the game EASILY....there were not just hot for a minute
type producer...cats are still producing lead singles for niggaz like jigga...its totally understandable for him to work with neptunes when him and dre were not fucking...he gets
the best of of great producers and vice versa....dont forget snoop brought neptunes back on the map when they was slippin for a minute
however is he consistant? no....the best lyricist? no....but its not all about that
i would say top 10 without doubt....if we talkin about leaving your mark on the game...then top 5 easy....if we talking about how unique he is...then his number 1...nobody does it like snoop
thats a fact.
however overall imma give him top 10......
he is a living legend and one of the best to put it down and at his peak nobody could fuck with him and even know when his flow is right, it dont matter whos on a track with him, he'll come off the best
dope post..

I question myself Biggie at that spot... but I use it to justifty putting the DOC in the top 15. LOL.
-
eminiem is koo. but not top 5 of all time.
-
I wrote a long rant first, but the gist of it is:
Snoop = a legend in the game, period. There's maybe others better than him, but that doesn't diminish his personal status.
I leave top 5's to others. There ain't no best.
-
definitely top 5 Snoop is a legend I don't know how Eminem can even be conisidered
-
definitely top 5 Snoop is a legend I don't know how Eminem can even be conisidered
second highest sell rap artist ever, second only to 'Pac, and his lyrically dope as hell, and expanded Hip-Hop to white people around the globe.
-
definitely top 5 Snoop is a legend I don't know how Eminem can even be conisidered
he sells a lot but has an annoying voice and flow and I don't find his lyrics that great

Listen to his first 3 albums and say that. MMLP was great. I will admit, Eminem has the swag of a white boy... lol.

Wow, Snoop hasn't had a dope album since Last Meal? funny, cause I thought BCT was his second best.
That said... dude hasn't been that consistent. Or atleast.. in a good way. his style on doggfather and game is to be sold not told was horrific, imo... he wasnt even flowing.
-

I Loved the "DoggFather".
BCT was mostly DOPE excluding 4-5 tracks.
AND
"Sold not told" is the his absolute WORST ALBUM EVER!!!
-
I agree....
that typical Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie, Pac, Eminem bullshit is lame...
you could argue so many rappers better than a few of them
I'll just throw a random name out right now off my head METHOD MAN >> Jay-Z, Biggie, Eminem
to say he's not as good a lyricist is ridiculous
-
man i agree with westcoast Method man>>>most of the usual top 5 bullshit picks.
Suga Free
Ghostface Killa
E-40
DJ Quik
Cam'ron
those dudes represent the most important factors of rhyming to me being creativity, uniqueness, mass appeal, drawing from the world around you, and being able to ride a beat like others cant.. Say what you want about them contributing conscious smart blah blah whatever the fuck but these dudes put it down in their respective genres and are at the pinnacles of rap.
-
^ yea.... E-40 for sure
anyone who dislikes E-40 is someone who never heard him and can't understand him and is square as a box of fruit loops for not knowing what he's talkin about
chuuuuuuuuuuuuuch
-
I dunno about top 5, but yeah he's a Icon, he's probably the most known rapper because his presence is everywhere. But he can't drop a classic album without Dre; although he still can drop good verses/ a good song (that's why he's the most featured rapper at all)
In opposite to Cube Snoop hasn't fallen off rap wise, but he can't make a good album all by himself. Snoop still could could record a new Doggystyle with Dre (altough the momentum is not there)
As rapper Snoop is one of the 5 greatest to me, but as an artist, hell no

east coast dudes are the worst they never give 40 props like that fool Rasheed Wallace and AZ

Not sure where Snoop is ranked, but outside of Dr. Dre no artist has had a bigger influence on the west as a whole. Snoop birthed an entire gang. Would we know the entire DPGC without Snoop? How many rappers are known because of Snoop. That alone should get him a very high ranking. 15 years of solo albums, plus the Dogg Pound, Warren G, Nate, Tha Eastsidez, Bad Azz, Soopafly, and countless others.
