SANTA ANA – Patricia Lopez walked out of her third grade classroom on June 3, 1987, and was never seen alive again.
Two days later, the 9-year-old girl’s bruised and battered body was found by children playing inside a feeder tunnel in the Santa Ana Riverbed near Fairview Street. She had been bludgeoned to death.
It became one of Orange County’s most notorious unsolved murder cases.
Last week, after re-evaluating evidence and submitting items for DNA testing, detectives from a newly formed Cold Case Homicide Unit of the Santa Ana police made an arrest: Rosendo Lopez, 42, Patricia’s brother.
Detectives contacted and interviewed Rosendo Lopez at his Santa Ana home on Thursday. Lopez was arrested after the interview.
He is scheduled for arraignment this afternoon in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
