Rodriguez opts out of contact with New York Yankees
By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer
October 28, 2007

DENVER (AP) -- Alex Rodriguez opted out of his $252 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees on Sunday in what appears to be the end of his career with New York.

Rodriguez's decision, announced by agent Scott Boras during Game 4 of the World Series, makes him eligible to become a free agent.

Rodriguez loses the final $72 million in guaranteed salary in the contract, of which $21.3 million was to be covered by payments from the Texas Rangers to the Yankees. New York had said it would not attempt to re-sign A-Rod if he opted out.

Boras said during a telephone interview Rodriguez made his choice because he was uncertain whether Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte would return to the Yankees.

"Alex's decision was one based on not knowing what his closer, his catcher and one of his statured pitchers was going to do," Boras said. "He really didn't want to make any decisions until he knew what they were going."

Arod is a bitch, but I think it's good that he opted out.  He was in a no win situation in NY.

I don't think so. Look at the Yanks in general, they always choked. Who did A-Rod play with in Texas... no one, and in Seattle he was still a young player. His never had the team to not choke. Jeter choked just as much as A-Rod. So in the playoffs, once he has a lineup around him that protects him, then we can judge. Vlad Guerrero comes to mind.

Would not mind seeing A-Rod in a Chicago Cubs uniform. Him and Lou Pinella are very close.

yeah, but now there is a rumor going around that gump is about to loose his job, and Joe Torre might be the new sheriff in town! http://www.nypost.com/seven/10292007/sports/yankees/joe_hollywood.htm

joe torre and arod, ALSO have a great relationship, giving the dodgers an edge.

whoever he ends up with will have to come out the ass...these are the teams that can realistically afford him:

dodgers
yanks
red sox
cubs
mets
angels (artie says he wont pay a player that type of money, but he can afford it)
and the giants

Dude, everyone is brand a choker until they win. Manning, Elway, The Boston Red Sox. Until you win, people say you are a choker. There are 10 players, (9 in the NL) that will also contribute to the teams fate. So when blaming A-Rod for the Yanks shortcomings, lets also look at the Jeter and everyone else.

A-Rod has had 4 good playoff series and 4 bad ones...I wouldn't really call him a choker.  Don't let the Yankee fans tell you what they think of him.  If it wasn't for A-Rod, the Yankees would have missed some playoffs in these past seasons.

SF is saving a shit load dumping Bonds. That's a possibility. I think he'll be an Angel, Arturo Moreno may not like the idea of paying A-Rod money, but word is his a huge fan of A-Rod and the Angels are in a large market, and Arturo is a billionaire so it's not like he can't afford it. Hell, he can pay A-Rods whole salary in cash if he truly wanted too.

I hope the Angels get him so he can win MVP and they can lose in the first round

and while he's at it he can make Arte Moreno raise the beer prices to give him a bigger cut

listen, he opted out cuz he wants more money. the yankees are gunna offer him more later and hell be back in pinstripes. the other reason is obv. steinbrenner told arod to do it, so he could take the spotlight away from the sox  8)

i doubt it, when the announcement came through last night, about 90% of NY turned on arod, if you dont believe me, check out the yankees message board..either way, whoever ends up signing him will pay about 32-36 per year for his services.

If the Twins are thinking of trading Santana, they will do it sometime in June next year or until they can establish Liriano is back in full effect, unless of course they offer him an extension or get some knockout players in return. Trading the best pitcher in baseball without having a decent rotation set for next year would be stupid on Minnesota's part.
