Torre to manage Dodgers; Mattingly will be his bench coach
By PETER ABRAHAM
THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: October 29, 2007)
The Los Angeles Dodgers have decided to fire manager Grady Little and replace him with former Yankees manager Joe Torre, The Journal News has learned.
Torre, 67, could be named manager as soon as tomorrow, according to two sources close to the situation. Don Mattingly is expected to accompany Torre to Los Angeles as his bench coach. Torre is also interested in hiring Kevin Long, his hitting coach with the Yankees.
The Dodgers were 82-80 this season under Little and were beset by clubhouse unrest. Owner Frank McCourt, a Boston native, decided Torre is best suited to quell that situation.
Torre turned down a one-year offer to remain as manager of the Yankees on Oct. 18. He had been with the Yankees 12 seasons, winning four World Series championships.

Yeah you could be right. Dodgers have a history of having dumb ass GM's.

colletii is a decent GM, but little was a HORRIBLE manager.
we could also upgrade in the GM department, but for now, at least, were moving in the right direction.

Wow, that shit came outta left field. Good for Torre and Mattingly. Now who else from the Yanks will follow...

It's the other way around. Little is a decent manager and Colletti is a horrible GM. Little kinda has been forced to not play the youngsters. For example, if I was manager I would have put Kemp in CF, Ethier in RF, and rotate Gonzalez and Pierre depending on who the opposing pitcher/catcher is. If I were to do that though, I'm sure I'll get fired asap. Not only for platooning 15 million dollars but also for causing a rift in the clubhouse by benching Gonzalez and Pierre. James Loney was put in AAA, thanks to our GM not Little. Tomko, Hendrickson got nods over Billingsley thanks to decision of our GM and Manager.

Just what I was thinking. I just heard on ESPN News that the Dodgers were considering him and now BAM. Official.

The La Bums will still under achieve.

I dont see any other websites reporting this. But if it is true I feel sorry for dodger fans. You are getting one of the most overrated managers in all of sports. Like I said before before he came to the bronx even fans in st.louis called him clueless joe and they love everyone. He is not a good manager. Unless you guys have a paul o'neil type player in the club house and don zimmer type mind on the bench the dodgers wont be any better. The hardest decision Joe had to make during the yankees great years was should I start Spencer or Ledee in left and should I bring Mo into the 8th. A giant boulder could of managed those great yankees teams. Truth be told he will be in the HOF b/c he was at the helm when the yanks won those world series but anyone could of taken those teams to the WS. Notice the yanks haven't done jack shit since O'Neil and Zimmer left ? Like I said I feel bad for you dodger fans that think you are getting a great manager. But I will love watching him get exposed for what he is.
-
replace that jersey in your sig with a dodger blue one and that's how i feel now.

I posted this in another thread about Torre and Arod but I will post it here.....
Torre is not a good manager, I dont know why LA wants him. The guy did jack shit before he came to the bronx. And those years the yanks were dominate the hardest decision he had to make was who starts in LF... shane spencer or ricky ledee. What have the Yanks won since Paul O'Neil and Don Zimmer left.... jack shit.

LOL aren't u a mets fan you probably hate the Yankees, fuck yeah I want Torre in LA and Arod its about time we started winning some championships
Hes right, Torre really isn't a good manager. How hard is it to manage the yankees, really?
He is horrible when it comes to the bullpen. He wasn't very good at small ball when he was a NL manager. He didn't play any small ball in the AL, even though you really dont have too. What makes you think he will be able to play small ball now. When times get bad in the clubhouse he is not good at keeping shit in check which is evident with AROD in 06. When there is bad call against his team isn't one to go out and have his players back. Though Wee Willie Randope makes him look like Sweet Lou. A lot of this stuff never really gets mentioned b/c at one point the Yanks were dominate. And two, b/c the media loves him. If he had the arrogance of Bobby Valentine (mets old manager and twice the manager Torre is) the media would of hated him and the fans as well and Torre would of been driven out of town a few years ago. And like Anthony said, those late 90's yankee teams how hard was it to manage. hell even the past few season with all the injuries he still was able to fill those holes with good ball players unlike most teams who have to use AAA players.

I'm more excited about Don Mattingly than Torre..
somebody build a time machine please, we finaly got Donny Baseball out of New York.
-
lol at the Torre haters we finally got a good manager and who knows maybe Posada and Rivera will follow

show me some great in game decisions he made. Show me somewhere b4 being handed one of the greatest rosters in baseball where anyone ever mentioned Torre as even a decent manager. Show me what the yanks have one since the heart and soul (Paul O'Neil) and the brains (Don Zimmer) have left the team, jack shit.
-
One thing I will give Torre is the fact he was good at keeping management away from the team.

you have to understand that ANYTHING is an upgrade from little...even a damn beat up ford pinto would have been a better manager than grady little...and now we have one of the best out there..
joe torre is number 8 on the all time winningest manager list, with 2,067 victories, youre saying thats a fluke?
-
the baseball manager has the least influence on their team than all the US major sports manager/coaches combined.
dodgers stay suckin more than anna nicole.

He got there because of all the great teams he was handed.

If that's the case then why hire Torre and not a cheaper manager? It's gonna be like 5x the salary of Little. It's just an expensive PR move to keep the dumb Dodger fans happy...I give him until the ALl Star break till people start bitching about him too...

If your gonna call any1 bums it should be your pacers buddy 8)
-
the one thing Torre might do is attract potential free agents. But besides that you're basically getting a manager just like Little.

because joe torre is a future HOF manager, and he is the motherfucking man! 8)
ill let our 08 season speak for itself.
-
It's all going to be how our GM does in the off-season...the fucking manager is so insignificant. All those Yankees World Series rings are thanks to Cashman and money. That's why Cashman is a Senior Vice President and Torre got offered a one year deal.

why is that kid? cause we finally missed the playoffs last year, we had made it to the postseason 9 years straight.

actually those WS teams were constructed by Gene Michaels and Bob Watson. Cashman came took over during the off-season in 97. But the most important pieces to those teams were drafted by Michaels and one of the bigger trades in yankees history, paul o'neil.... stats do not show how important he was to those teams.
-
I would say 99-00 had a lot of input from Cashman, and his moves with money has allowed the Yankees to continue making the post-season. Either way, Torre is just a small part of the entire era.
