she's part of a contemporary singer-songwriter/folk subgenre/movement known as anti-folk.

she plays piano and sings. she sometimes has a full rock band, or orchestral strings and other crazy shit on her stuff too.

i'm at the work PC so I have no way to hook you up with anything. depending on people's answers in here we'll try to get some thing cracking in the HUS asap.

she's from russia till she was 9 and then moved to NY.

her songs are devastatingly melodic, quirky, catchy, funny, moving...they feel personal and in a way they are, but most of the situations she describes are from her imagination.

she talks about waiting in the waiting room of the E.R. while a boyfriend is ODing. Partying on coke and promiscuous sex in hotels. Her dad that can't keep up with walking home from school cause he smokes cigs/is dying of cancer. A dream she had about having 4 kids taken care of by a life insurance policy cause she's dying of cancer. How even when you love people, you use them. Old lovers....everything you'd expect a singer-songwriter to talk about and more.

her styles are so diverse too. one minute a song sounds like Beatles, then Nirvana, then Fiona Apple, then Coco Rosie, then there's alot of stuff that's just her. She adds some russian-jewish influence (she's a russian jew) alot of the time too, her piano skills are off the chain. she's insane.

funky ass tony, if you could get someone to hook you up with (i'll see if i can up 'em when I get home tonight) 'begin to hope' and 'soviet kitsch' you should. based on what i've read, those would be more accessible than her earlier ones that beatz is hooking up.

damn, that's tight. i only have 'soviet kitsch', 'begin to hope' and 'live at bull moose' so out of the songs you just named the only one I've heard is 'samson'. that's a good song, but a little sadder than my favorites of hers

I've only heard one of her songs and im not even sure what it was called, but it was on the radio so i assume it was her most popular one but i enjoyed it and my girl really likes her too, a hook up would be appreciated.

i haven't listened to 'songs' yet, but the whole '11:11' album is deliciously billie holiday influenced and bluesy as shit. really different from alot of the 'artier' stuff she would go on to do.

she also beat boxes a little on 'chemo limo' on 'soviet kitsch'

I've heard some of her stuff a while back, but I can't really remember what it was. Never actually checked for her again ever since, even though I know I should have. So that's what I'll do next :D

Those 2 albums and 'Soviet Kitsch' is her best work IMO. 'Begin To Hope' is ok but lacks a little due to its attempt to appeal to a more mainstream crowd.
