Title: An Interesting Way To Look At Sampling -
Post by: Trauma-san on July 12, 2001, 12:16:03 PM
Hey Yall, I Just Thought Up A New Topic.

I've Been Thinking About This For A Long Time, It's About When Artists Jack The Chorus Of A Song.

For Instance, Take "Ghetto Superstar", By Pras, Mya, Etc.  What Do You Like About The Song? If The Song DIDN'T Have That Hook, Would You Still Like The Song? If You Answered Yes, Than That's Cool.  But If You Mainly Just Like The Sampled Hook Of A Song, You Don't Really Like The Song In My Opinion, You Just Like The Original!

For Me, A Good Example Of This Is The Tupac Song "Until The End of Time".  After Listening To It A FEw Times, I Thought, Um... Basically I Don't Like the Lyrics Too Much, They Don't Really Move Me Much.  All I Like Is The Hook, And It's Exactly Like The Original.   So Actually, I Don't Like This Song ,Just The Original.

An Opposite Example Would Be "Changes" By Tupac.  The Original Was A Great Song, But On This One, Not Only Do I Like The Hook, But I Also Like The Verses, He's Got Great Lyrics, And A Great Meaning, That Ties In With The "That's Just The Way It Is" Theme Of The Song.  (By The Way, That Song Woulda Been MUCH Better If Bill Withers Would Have Recreated The Hook, Or Been Sampled Instead Of Interpolated).

Can Yall Think Of Any Songs That You Really Don't Like, You Just Like The Original So Much That It's Tight?

More Examples: Shaggy's "Angel"... The Original Song Is What Made It So Dope

On The Other Hand, Ice Cube's Bop Gun And Dr. Dre's Let Me Ride Both Expanded On The Original, And Were Competant Songs WITHOUT The Samples.

Anybody Have Any More That Effectively Used A Sample, Or Any That Without The Sample, Wouldn't Be A DAMN Thing?

Puff Daddy - I'll Be Missing You Wouldn't Be A Thing Without All The Stuff He Jacked From The Sting Song (the Police).  The Lyrics Were Nothing, And Everything Besides Puffy's Verse Was From The Original Song!  So, I Don't REally Like That Song, I Like The Original, Ya Know?  THAT'S The Part I'm Singing To...

i recently downloaded these:
kool and the gang - winter sadness (used on Pac's picture me rollin)
Minnie Riperton - Inside My Love (used on Chico & Coolwadda's Godzilla Like)

although the originals are cool, i really like how both were sampled and expanded upon, and the raps really worked well with both.

songs where i prefer the original, too many to name. very few people sample creatively. examples that springs to mind are Biggie's One More Chance and Big Poppa. beats were complete rip offs of the shit they sampled (DeBarge and Isley Brothers respectively). but thats wack ass Puff Diddly for you.

Ice Cube - My Summer Vacation which samples "Atomic Dog" is fucking awesome.. it'd be tight no matter what cuz i mean u can kinda recognize the sample but it sounds nothing like atomic dog in my opinion..
