Title: Devendra Banhart
Post by: Tanjential on November 12, 2007, 01:59:31 PM
This dude is amazing.

It's like latin folk music meets the white stripes meets johnny cash meets roy orbison meets 50s rock in general. and other things that aren't so easy to label.

dude is amazing. anyone else into him?

this guy is nothing like jack johnson

jack johnson is modern west coast beach music, which is dope

but devendra banhart is like a progressive folk rock singer songwriter.

they are both west coast based if that's what you mean.

but saying 'this kind of music' is like if someone bumps some souljah boy and says 'oh there's only so much of this hip hop i can take'
but whatever I'm just saying it's two very different things.

check his latest album, it sounds like a soundtrack to a tarantino movie or something. amazing.

His music is a fucking trip. Its like old school psychadelic folk revival but a little different. I can hear progressive rock influence in some of his music as well.

I dunno, I cant really get into the whole "New Weird America movement" they are calling it.  Such as Devendra Barnhart, Joanna Newsome, Animal Collective etc.  What I heard of him I liked but the whole thing he's getting lumped into I dont really feel.

LMAO at the Jack Johnson/Barnhart comparison.

i'm not really into the new weird america movement either, thats why i mentioned devendra banhart and not the new weird america movement

i just lump him into the 'singer/songwriter' category. though cocorosie and joanna newsome are good, i'm more i to emily haines and regina spektor.

anyway, this dude's shit is dope.

I checked some of his stuff out and wasn't really too into it, but I need to check out more. My friend who told me about him saw him in concert and said it was the best concert he has ever been to, and I respect his opinion on music so I'll give Banhart some more listens before I really form an opinion.

his shit is so diverse that checking some of his stuff out just isn't sufficient. you gotta listen to a fucking gang of it cause he has so many styles. I guarantee you'll find some dope shit.

he's almost like two different artists.

he has some songs that are like latin jazz/rock/salsa/mariachi awesomeness

and then he has his stuff in english which ranges from psychedelia to folk and classic rock

you gotta check out his songs in spanish, someone hooked up 'smokey rolls down thunder canyon' in this thread.

#3 and #12 from those are great examples. forgot #3's title, but #12 is called carmensita.

Hell yeah Devendra Banhart is dope. If you like his you should check out Faun Fables, even better and more creative
