Title: I'm On My East Coast Shit Pt.2; Nas
Post by: Lunatic on November 20, 2007, 01:56:25 PM
What it do y'all? I'm sure most of y'all remember pt.1 about jay-z. After checkin out Jigga's discography, i thought i'd move onto another New York heavyweight, Nas.

Illmatic - 9.8/10 I had always heard this was THE hip-hop album...greatest album of all time and so on. When I decided to listen to it, my hopes were extremely high. And god dammit, was they met!! Nas is an MC, and he was in a ZONE during the making of this album. Nas + in a zone = DANGEROUS. This shit is the greatest hip-hop album that i've ever personally heard, and probably of all time.
Top 5 Tracks
N.Y State Of Mind
Memory Lane
Halftime
One Time 4 Your Mind
It Ain't Hard To Tell
Weaker Cuts
None.

It Was Written - 9.6/10 So this is the sophomore. sophomore jinx? How do u follow up an album like illmatic? These were some of the questions I had going into this album. I quickly saw there was nothing to worry over, Nas didn't really lose his touch at all (i don't think he did, but that was for the haters who was gon say "then how come illmatic got .2 better"??) lol. This album is the best possible way to follow up such a dope debut.
Top 5 Tracks
Suspect
If I Ruled The World
Affirmative Action
The Set Up
I Gave You Power
Weaker Cuts
None.

I Am... - 9.1/10 Third album, still goin amazingly strong. This album has a few cuts that ain't as good as the rest, that's the ONLY downfall (somethin that i didn't think of his previous 2 efforts).
Top 5 Tracks
Small World
Favor For a Favor
Hate Me Now
N.Y State Of Mind Pt. 2
Undying Love
Weaker Cuts
Big Things
Money Is My Bitch

Nastradamus - 8.5/10 I had heard this was one his weaker albums. And although still pretty good, doesn't even touch his fist 3 albums. I also heard this album was a bit rushed, and i'd probably have to agree with that statement. Far from wack though.
Top 5 Tracks
Life We Chose
Come Get Me
Last Words
Big Girl
Nastradamus
Weaker Cuts
Some Of Us Have Angels
Family
You Owe Me

Stillmatic - 9.2/10 What a strong come-back after a weaker effort. For me, this one is in his top 3. Even better than the "I Am" album, but not touching his first 2 efforts. Filled with lyrical gems though, and the beats are nuts. One Mic might be on of the best rap beats ever, shit is nuts. So many crazy tracks. From the fierce Jay-z diss to the hella creative & cool "rewind".
Top 5 Tracks
One Mic
Ether
Got Yourself a Gun
Rewind
Intro
Weaker Cuts
Rule
Braveheart Party

God's Son - 8.2/10 Lots of dope tracks, but also filled with more weak and average ones than you're average nas albums. Really a hit or miss album.
Top 5 Tracks
The Cross
Last Real N*igga Alive
Thugz Mansion
Get Down
Dance
Weaker Cuts
Zone Out (One of the worse nas tracks)
Hey Nas
Warrior Song

Street's Disciple - 7.9/10 Easily the worse Nas album of all time. As you can see by the rating still not bad, but not sure what the heck he was thinkin with this one. Should add that U.B.R is a dope track, but not in my top 5.
Top 5 Tracks
Just a Moment
Suicide Bounce
Bridging The Gap
Thief's Theme
War
Weaker Cuts
Nazareth Savage
These Are Our Heroes
You Know My Style
Makings Of a Perfect Bitch
Getting Married
No One Else In The Room (THE worse nas song)

Hip-Hop Is Dead - 8.8/10 Also went into this album with lots of hype. All the "classic" sayings & 10/10 reviews given out by the fans & critics got me hyped. I think it's a dope album, much better than his previous 2 efforts, but still far from classic. And don't come to me with that "maybe the hype was just to much" because the hype for me was even bigger for illmatic, and no problems there. Damn good hip-hop albums in a time were they're ain't a whole lot, (although 2007 has been a damn good year) but far from classic.
Top 5 Tracks
Hip-Hop Is Dead
Black Republicans
Still Dreamin
Hustlers
Money Over Bullshit/Not Going Back
Weaker Cuts
Who Killed It? (the FUCK was he thinkin??)

Bty, I also listened to his "lost tapes" and thought it was better than street's disciple, god's son & nastradamus lol. That shit got some gems on it (Nothing lasts forever, Doo Rags, No Idea's Original, Purple, Black Zombies, & Fetus).

All in all, Nas is easily top 3-5 rappers all time, and for the most part his discography is very impressive. Kinda like a roller coaster, but it don't go down to far, and takes u up really high. I'm out y'all.

Wow.. Rule is sick. I don't know how you can't like that... then again you didn't like Jay's "The Prelude" either...

HHiD is a classic, imo. Top 3 of 06 for sure.

yea, different tastes i get
that's the beauty of an artist like jigga or nas..u may like a song i think is weak or wack, or maybe jut average
no way that a classic...it is top 3 of 06, but still wasn't a classic
opinions i guess

I don't understand how anyone can like "I Am...". I'm not knocking your opinion or anything (if you like it that's good for you) but seriously, that CD for me has only like 4 good tracks, maybe 5 & Money Is My Bitch is one of them.

I don't get this post.  Maybe something was really changed in the edit but what is wrong with putting "Braveheart Party" as one of the weaker songs?

i'm actually a bit confused myself lol now that i think bout it
i meant to type rule as one of the weaker cuts, but i also just noticed somethin...
the stillmatic album that i just copped recently doesn't have no braveheart party song on it, BUT my downloaded version on my CPU does

It's because "Braveheart Party" was on the original version of Stillmatic but later on after it was released the song was removed from future pressings of the album.  Mary J didn't want it on the album anymore for some reason and I guess the record company let it happen.

uh, more like 40's italian mobster. the whole concept was based around a humphery bogart type narration. i felt it for the beat and lyrics, even though the voice was kinda overdoin it

Illmatic is a 10 for me - There's no such thing as a perfect album but this, Chronic & Paid In Full are all 10's to me.

IWW is about an 8 for me.  I can look back at the singles for IIRTW and Street Dreams and appreciate them now for nostalgia, but at the time I honestly wasn't feeling them.  To this day, "Nas is Coming" is probably one of the most disappointing songs I'd ever heard.  You take 2 guys behind 2 of Hip Hops best albums and you get this shit?  Dre & Nas just didn't mesh well, the hook is TERRIBLE.  Even Nas & Dre sound awkward on the intro.    There are a few joints on here that I really like, those being: "The Message" "Watch Dem Niggas", "Take It In Blood", "Affirmative Action", "Black Girl Lost"

I am would be like a 7

Nastradamus like a 6

Stillmatic 9

Gods son - 8

Streets disciple - 8.5

HHID - 8

I really liked Message to the Feds off Streets Disciple. It was so rebellious and had that slow military drum roll, very 1970's Oaklandish

Nastradamus is easily Nas' worst album &  "Nas Is Like" is up there with his best joints ever.

Streets Disciple seriously has maybe 3 wack tracks.  That album is criminally underrated.

Yeah I am looking at Streets Disciple and IMO having a hard time finding more than 3 wack tracks. Nastradamus the good parts are great and the bad parts are horrible. Last Words is slept on though. How Nas raps as if he was a jail cell was dope. Come Get Me is another classic Premo combo.

'who kiled it' is amazing in context with what he was trying to do/say artistically on that album. it's a murder mystery.

have you read the breakdown of the lyrics? he's doing amazing shit talking about the history of hip hop as a murder mystery and shit.

and it was written is a sophomore slump because of the production not the raps. he needs to fuck with Primo again.
