Heat center Alonzo Mourning left Wednesday's game against the Atlanta Hawks in the first quarter with a torn patella tendon in his right knee.
Mourning's knee buckled as he attempted to defend a driving dunk by Hawks guard Mario West with 4:22 to play in the opening period.
Such an injury normally requires surgery followed by a recuperative period of up to six months. Mourning, in addition, has limitations on any treatment as a kidney-transplant recipient.
Mourning, 37, said in the offseason this would be his final season.
As West rose to dunk, Mourning fell in the lane, clutching his knee. After Hawks forward Josh Smith scored on a follow-up of West's miss, Heat trainer Ron Culp and coach Pat Riley rushed to Mourning's side beneath the Hawks rim.
After initially being placed on a stretcher, Mourning refused to be wheeled off the court, instead limping off while supported by teammates Dwyane Wade and Earl Barron.
Mourning was forced into action less than three minutes into the game after starting center Shaquille O'Neal was called for two early fouls.
Upset about the second of those calls, O'Neal was assessed a technical foul by referee Gary Zielinski as Mourning was leaving the court for the locker room.
Mourning had converted both of his shots, grabbed a rebound and recorded five points in his 4 minutes, 44 seconds of action.
Mourning entered Wednesday's game ranked 10th all-time in the NBA in blocked shots, five shy of ninth-place Robert Parish.
He holds Heat career franchise records for games played, minutes played, points, rebounds, blocked shots and turnovers.

Well if the injury really is that serious then he's done obviously. But I can see him making a retarded comeback at 39 or some shit.
