Title: Review of Dre's production on Devil's Night
Post by: infinite59 on June 20, 2001, 04:07:03 PM
It seems that Dre has been experimenting with giutars working with a guy named Mike Elizando, he probably had him play some shit for him, and he sampled what he liked for the songs.  It came out really nicely though.
Another interesing note is that the Truth Hurts is the person your hearing in the background on Nasty Mind.

1.  Revelation- 10- Scott Sorch was also a part of the production for this track, along with Mike Elizando, Dre puts together a 2001 version of Pink Floyd's the Wall, that speaks to todays generation.  Really feeling this track, my favorite on the album.

2. Fight Music- 10- Mike Elazando and Scott Sorch again help Dre out with this track.  You might remember Scott Sorch for his work on Xzibit's album, and Snoop's album, he's a white boy from New York who I believe used to work with the Roots.  The track although loud comes out the speakers really clean, I didn't like this song at first until I heard Eminem and Proof's verses.

3. Nasty Mind- 7- This sounds like a 2001 leftover. Working with Mike Elazando again this time, reminds me of "Xxplosive" off the 2001 album.  A soft track with explcit lyrics all over it.  Kon Artis' verse is what makes this song.

4. Ain't Nuthin But Music- 6- I like the darker tracks on the album.  However I think this song will blow up, and push their sales threw the roof.  Once again, Dre comes in and produces a hit song.  Mike Elazando and Scott Sorch come in again on this track, and Scott Sorch's work on the keyboard is what really makes this song.   It seems Mel-Man was absent in the making of these songs, but Dre produces dope cuts no matter who he's working with. Like Snoop says, "another platinum hit"

1.  Revelation- 6
2. Fight Music- 6
3. Nasty Mind- 6
4. Ain't Nuthin But Music- 5

This album is dissapointing. I expected the lyrics but the production? thats shite.

I think the production is tight from all 4 main producers - Jeff Bass, Em, Dre and Denaun Porter (Kon Artis).  Good strong album - toss up between Sticky Fingaz and this for my album of the year so far.
Dre goes rock on this album and it's tight
Anyone know what the fuck is going on at the end of Revelation?
My favourite track at the mo:
This is How it Happens to you!
(Jay ay Beee's posts absoloutely suck)

Devils Night is tight, but Sticky Fingaz is doper, after about 2 weeks rotation ill be sick of Eminems voice for another year. Purple Pills is gettin rinsed on Tv and radio aswell.

I fucking hate that song - not D12s fault tho

I took it into college and put it on the cdplayer and all i heard was "put purple pills on" and after it finished they said to put the radio on because the rest of the album is not as good (even tho they had never heard it). I guarantee they will all have the album in 6 months time!

I agree the production wasn't all that good. I only really like the tracks Dre did. The rest are not as good except Sghit Can Happen.

what's up y'all. i think your assesment of dre's productions are fair. i'm sure some people are disappointed with the lyrics and quickly tiring topics (as was i), but anyone who thinks the production is weak should listen to some other type of music. the production is top notch and every producer comes through. em does a nice job but bites off dre's style a little too much, but that can be corrected as eminem grows into his prodcution talents. the only track dre was a little disappointed in was nasty mind. but the other 3 are dope as hell. the only people disappointed are people who still can't get over the fact dre has moved past g-funk onto original compositions. like i mentioned before dre will not backdate his talents by going back to g-funk. dre's gonna keep movin on and create new sounds. anyways dre and mike elizando (who has worked with dre since the beginning of aftermath, including a ton of work on 2001) are experimenting in some harder guitar sounds. mike plays many different instruments including all guitars (bass, upright bass, lead, acoustic ) and keyboards. dre likes rock music and has been wanting to put together a black rock band for 5 years. and someday if he finds the right talent he will put it together. dre's really focusing on using a lot of different live instruments and guitar will be used more and more as he expands his sounds and tightens up his musical weapons. dre will delve into more rock and r and b as time goes by so be ready. but dont worry hard core hip hop is still his main sound and always will be. scott storch is a also really talented. he is a incredible piano and keyboard player. and no mel man did not work on any songs as hes been working on other projects.
but devil's night's production is as good as any new album out there. and 3 of the 4 dre tracks are spectacular.

I actually thought the subject matter was more spread out this time. They rapped about alot of different thing. There were only 2 or 3 diss tracks (Girls and Nuttin But Music).

Post by: Jay ay Beee on June 21, 2001, 04:59:07 AM
If you actually listen closely to Nuttin but Music - Swifty, Kon Artis and sort of Proof are all saying something worthwhile especially Swifty - they're not cussing they're blaming the media for being too uptight and causing things like Princess Diana's death. And Proof is sort of defending everyone he talks about telling them to beat there cases at the end.
But Eminem, Kuniva (who says the funniest thing on the album in his verse IMO) and as usual Bizzare just straight cuss

Whichever One Had That Line

"Slim Said He Don't Like N*Sync... Well I Do, So Fu*k Him, ANd The Backstreet Boys Too!"

Is That The One You're TAlking About? That's Hilarious...

I Thought The PRoduction Was Alright, NOt Quite UP To Dre's Latest, But I Think It's Cuz I Wasn't Feelin' The Guitars As Much.  ONce Again Though, He's Dropped Some Next Era Stuff... I Agree Em's Biting Dre A Bit Too, But That Can't Be Too Bad :)

Naah for some reason I laughed out loud when Kuniva said "My grandmother's old fashioned, she's country/ and she keeps asking me why I rap with a honky"

I found that funny

Also from Bizzare:
"10 years is what I'm facing/the police raided my house/Lil' Bow Wow's in the basement/

HaHA

i still consider alot of the shit dre does as g-funk,just nee g-funk sounds, i men  nuttin but music and nasty mind are FUNKY. It seems dre did 2 funk tracks:nasty mind, nuttin but music, and 2 rock tracks: fight music, revelation. Revelation is one of the best songs i've heard in awhile FANTASTIC, it inspired me to write some shit on the spot right when i heard it, i swear i started to cry a lil bit from that song...Dre comes fucking dope you guys expect too much, the rest of the production was great as well it's all dre derivative and it has a consistent sound, a near perfect mix of funk and rock to make hip-hop, i think it's tied with dpg for second place at least, i ain't heard sticky fingaz yet but you guys say it's classic and dpg or d12 aren't but i give dpg and d12, 8 out of 10.is anyone else LOVING this intro? "this is ANOTHER public service announcement brought to you in part by-shut up punk!!" lmao
this album has tons of great songs, i like every song, purple pills and pistol pistol are the worst songs but even those are at least good.notice the dre track dre was disappointed in was nasty mind and eminem wasn't on it..i was surprised that dre produced a d12 track without eminem because we all know how discriminating dre is with who he works with and i didnt think d12 w/out eminem wouldn't have enough talent for a dre beat but hey it came out NICE. I was very surprised they did a pimp track since eminem has never claimed pimp but hey that came out good too.this makes me miss my old eminem cds and 2001(2001 and slim shady lp got stolen,mm lp was run over) so i think i'm gonna cop those again, there is topic stagnation here but it's still way different from most of the rest of the industry which is why it still works, but when the rest of the rap game catches on to this shit then hopefull Em will get the point..man that's how is soo catchy..anyway..i could go on but damn bodyrott..i think that was harsh judgement but hey i respect your opinion but damn i thought this was some next dope futuristic funky rock shit..anyway don't even think i'm saying all this good shit to kiss ass cuz of mellowman, even ask jakedogg or doggystylin i was sayin this shit yesterday and the day before as well, and i think i made a few prior posts about it too so boo yah LOL peace-Tanjint

all of Dre's tracks were good!

All of the Tracks Fit D12.......
fight music i didnt like at first..but after listening to it a dozen times...and listenin to the lyrics...that is the perfect...get rowdy song!       get amped....and the lyrics are true....
the subject matter is not redundat either....i can listen to this cd over and over....

It is a good rounded album..and dre level is still top notch..i like how he can work with others besides mel man to produce a song..........
this is by far one of thee best CD's to come out this year.......

i think the funniest part of nuttin but music is when kuniva says "we all fart and piss then cuss out our bitch" then some chick goes "SHUT UP", that's hella funny, peace.

Yeah that's hella funny (Kon Artis says it tho) they are so hard to tell apart.
I had to check D12world.com's lyrics a couple of times to work out who rapped what.
Listen to the track Devils Night when Bizarre says "Lil' Bow Wow in the basement" then you hear in the background screaming "JERMAINE!!!!" it's so funny.

I didn't say i didn't like pistol pistol, i just said that it and purle pills weren't as quality as the rest of the album but they're still good. and the funniest part to me is on Fight Music when Bizarre is like
"I fuckin hate you
i'll pull your pants down and rape you
and have dr.dre videotape you(in the background Dre: HELL YAAH!)" when that "hell yah" comes in i start uncontrollably laughing.
it's also pretty funny when bizarre's like "it's friday night,i'm at a rave again.pickin up transvestites in my harley davidson"
eh there's too many,peace-Tanjint

one of my favorite parts of the cd is in pistol pistol when proof is rapping and it's like "never say that i'm a gangsta" "NOW THAT'S GANGSTA" that is ill as fuck, i get chills up my spine the first couple of times that i heard that, dope shit, peace.

quick note. dre and trent rezor got together in the studio for a weekend and dre took a early cut of even deeper and added his ideas and production and then mixed it for trent. i love the track. like i said guitar (rock style guitars- not bass, cause dre's been using bass, keyboard bass, moog bass and upright bass for years) is another weapon dre's adding to his arsenal. from beautiful but deadly to even deeper to revelation dre has proven capable of incredible guitar driven productions. dre and reznor were going to do an album together but it never panned out. peace.

Reznor and Dre share the same musical feeling ,like u said Dre is trying to incorporate some rock elements into his music ,and Reznor is a hip hop fan ...he worked with Cube on "i'm afraid of america remix + Cube has sampled "Hurt" for "the gangsta , the killa and the dope dealer".
+ they're both on interscope so...
Do you know if the project is really buried like Helta Skelta or the NWA reunion ?!

I don't know man, dre's production was ok, but  compared to like 2001 he just seemed kinda lazy.
