the mop and lfo is a HUGE one

when jay-z started widdling himself to a pop rap rapper, i'm not saying he's a sell out but he went from a legitimate mc to a radio and mtv pleaser

mc hammer of corse
vanilla ice of corse he even admits it
mack 10 did in a way when he went to cash money
snoop did sort of by going to no limit but i don't really blame him cuz where else would he go? and he needed guidence after suge got locked up and dre left, it's like snoop said god put him there for a reason

yea i 4got about jay z's hard knock life song that 1 was definatly a big sell out moment

vinally ice was too

i don't agree with snoops deathrow>no limit move but he has in other aspects but not really that big
Title: Re: biggest sell out moments in hiphop?
Post by: West Coast Veteran on June 20, 2001, 05:25:01 PM
i dont think Jigga's song Hard Knock Life was a sell out song...its fucking horrible but it was original..no one had lil kids singin the chorus b4 and no one sampled a broadway play b4 either...now everyone from busta to trick daddy has bitten that shit...it was kinda commercial but innovative

Post by: Don Jacob on June 20, 2001, 05:27:10 PM
yeah i think that song is jay-z at his creative best, but i'm talkin about all those made-for-mtv/radio songs like "hey popi"
Title: Re: biggest sell out moments in hiphop?
Post by: TheSheriff on June 20, 2001, 05:35:48 PM
Shit, I like HNL, but the fact Hey Papi was recorded specially for radio and shit...UGH

Hammer was never "street" to begin with...

VIce didn't have anything to sell out from either...

Outkast never did that shit, and if they did, that wasn't sellin out anyway...I can vouch for them when I say this...(And this is from a COMPLETELY credible source)That they have never changed their music fro the crowds.

EMinem performing with Elton John.

Its not exactly selling out but he went against most the shit he said when he performed with him.

Yeah I agree...The Eminem and Elton John thing was a pretty big sell-out thing for Em to do, but I have no respect for him anyway :p

Jay-Z
Nas
Those are the biggest two in my eyes.

I'm hoping the MOP/LFO is just one song. I don't want to hear any other pop shit from MOP.

The Hammer thing i'll never understand. i always liked Hammer, he did what he wanted to do. He wasn't a gangster and didn't pretend to be. Sure he did go hardcore for a while but he did that because he was running low on money. He did what it took to survive to bad no one took him seriously.

There is a difference between expanding yourself as an artist and selling out.  Eminem didnt sell out by performing with Elton John but Fred Durst sold out by doing a song with Christina Gaguliera.  Elton John is respected throughout the music industry while Christina is a joke to the entire music industry.  And no..Mack-10 joining Cash Money is not selling out at all.  Mack 10 was dropped from his label so he joined another hot label that continues to put out hot gold and platinum album--far from sellling out.  However, the LFO/MOP thing is disturbing as hell and I cant even begin to imagine what led to that.  I wonder if they were in the studio together or if it was cut and paste.  Either way--a HUGE thumbs down to M.O.P.

Busta rhymes and those damn mountain dew commercials. i used to like his music until he came out with "get outta here" or something like that. even Extinction Level Event was kinda pop.
Title: Re: biggest sell out moments in hiphop?

^^^both of them sold out...and Fred Durst ain't even HIP HOP so know one here really gives 2 shits about him...sorry man Em sold out there...i bet even his fans would say that...first he dissin FAGS sayin he wants to kill them then he does a song with a FAG and on top of that gives him a BIG LOVING HUG...LMAO! ROFL! LOL!

You got shit twisted. EMinem dissed gays in MMLP multiple times and them all of a sudden does a collab with Elton John, a gay guy.

Fred Durst didn't diss Christina Agulara and then go perform with her. It don't matter cause EM performing with Elton John ain't exactly selling out anyways.

Snoop WAS Pushed To No Limit, He Didn't Get To Choose... It's Like H'es A God D*mn Prisoner.

I Gotta Say The 2 Biggest Sell Out Moments In HISTORY Were

1. VAnilla Ice, Although I Probably Woulda Done The Same Thing.  He Was Kinda Street, He Wore Adidas Suits, Thick Gold Chains (Like Run DMC) Breakdanced, Was Into Turntables, DJing, Etc. (Look At His Lyrics, Yall, That Was His Life), And Then He Changed His Whole Image For The Record company, That's Why He Looked Like A Little Punk, But His Lyrics Were Always About Parties, Drugs, Guns, Etc.

2. Puff Daddy Doing The "I'll Be Missing You" Dedication Song A Few Days After Biggie Died.  THEN, Making The Whole "No Way Out" Album A F'in Memorial, Except He Didn't REally Give Props To Biggie, He Just Whined About "What Ima Do Now? Huh?" On The Whole Album... What, He Mentions It On Like 5 Tracks?

What ? No way man Snoop wasn't forced to go anywhere - there's interviews that you can find in Snoops Doggpound where he tells the story on how he decided to go to No Limit
Think about it - if Snoop went to Def Jam he would sell loads more than he did with N.L. - so Suge would send him there to profit off him
It was totally Snoop's decision

Well whatever that's all speculation but the bottom line is that Snoop was not pushed into signing with No Linit.  It was totally his choice.

I read that snoop had done a few projects with no limit, built a big respect for master p, and wanted to go down south cuz he had family down there.

so by that im assuming it was his choice, i dont know what happened behind the scenes tho

Eminem Did not sell out.  Eminem doesnt really HATE gays.  He doesnt approve of their sexual preference but that doesnt mean its selling out if he does a song with a talented person that just happens to be gay.  Damn--Just like Eminem/Dre say-It aint nothin but music--RELAX.

You Can Force Someone To Go To Another Label.  Suge Had Snoop Locked Up For An 8 Album Deal! He Did "Doggystyle", And "Doggfather", And Owed Suge 6 More Albums.  Snoop Couldn't Leave The Label, Unless He Went To No Limit.  Easy As That.  P Worked Up A Deal Paying Suge For Snoop (Like A Slave, I Might Add..) And Then Suge Would Eat Off Snoop's Next 6 Albums, Which Master P Would ALSO Eat Off, Along With Priority Records.  See Why Snoop's Pissed?

Also, An OG Is A Gang Member Who's Shot And Killed Somebody.  A BG Is A Member Who Hasn't.

i know you a big fan of Em and shit but you gotta admit that was a big SELL OUT move...Snoop is my top 3 MC's and i admit he fucked up alot of times...so in your logic i can say all this shit that i say i believe in [fuck gays] and then when something really important comes up [the grammys] i can switch my beliefs around in order to impress the world. i bet if it was P. Diddy hugging Elton John all you Em fans would be fuck Puff sold out again.

and TELL ME in all LOGIC how Em did not SELL OUT?
cause he was trying to expand his horizons with performing with a talented artist?
LOL! well if he's going to go against his beliefs then i guess Em is true to himself *sarcasm*...and if he doesn't really hate gays why say it? and if he says "fuck the grammys" why go to it and perform with a fag? hmmmm? i know! for contraversy to sell records!

and yeh thats Snoop and Pac

Hell, WCV, I'm not even that much of a big Em fan...Just showin his side of the argument...

But Em is just kiddin 'bout with gays...peep criminal...

And the grammys...Well, most artists said they don't want the awards, Dre, Snoop, they sold out cause they accepted awards?

Shit, if Em sold out, well, that's fair enough...Ya migth be right, I guess I just don't see it that way...

And Puffy didn't sell out. He never had anything to sell out from. He wasn't street. :)
Title: Re: biggest sell out moments in hiphop?
Post by: West Coast Veteran on June 24, 2001, 11:17:11 AM
the only reason why i think Em sold out is cause he said "fuck the grammys" and then went to them and performed with a fag...Snoop and Dre never said that publicly...i wouldn't be mad if Em said that shit and then accepted the award without attending...Jigga boycotted the grammys but accepted the award...Em should have done that instead of going to the grammys and agreeing to perform with Elton John...and if Em says all that "fuck gays" shit just for contraversy then i have lost even more respect...
