Title: (VIDEO) The History of Dj Quik & Shade Sheist's "John Doe"
Post by: Shade Sheist™ on January 24, 2008, 08:45:22 AM
THE "JOHN DOE" SESSION @ SKIP SAYLOR STUDIOS IN CALIFORNIA

John Doe - The Name: As we all know.. (or should)
Eazy-E used to use the John Doe moniker in his early raps
and eventually Dj Quik started to make reference to himself as such..
on this particular record Quik told me he wanted to give me the biggest record I would ever have
and put me in the history books with the other "John Does"..

Imagine Mizza and I walk into the studio and Quik is bangin the beat, adding a clap to it on his custom MPC..
I'm like "GOD Damn Quik!"  and he's all "You like your beat?" I laughed. Mizza over on the side gettin his groove on.
It was done.. but.. it was everything but the keyboard parts you hear in the beat. It was just drums and that dope-ass sample in the back.

The keyboards came just a few minutes later..
It just so happens Devante Swing of Jodeci was on the premesis and he happened to walk past the studio while we were jammin.
Quik spotted him and went nuts. I'm talkin bout he was happy as hell to see dude..
Devante said "Yo that was Tite.. Thas your new shit?" and Quik told him "Nah this is Sheist's!"
and then he told Devante he would be honored if he just touched some keys on it.
Devante was like "man, thats nothin!" He sat down, lit a cigarette and just freestyled the part.. first try..
and played it all the way through.. if u listen close.. u will now be able to tell!
What was dope was to see him at times play with one hand when he wanted to take a toke.. how do u play both parts of that wit 1 hand!?

Then Hi- C walked in.. Quik was like you gotta get on this. Hi-C is the homie anyways so.. that was obvious.
Then AMG walked in.. Quik was like you gotta get on this..  AMG just walked into the booth.

I asked Quik if he was gonna bless me and he said he had a dope hook in mind and he was gonna use talkbox too. I shutup after that. LoL.
But the homie 2Swift was in the place as well and Quik looked over to him like "You ready for a record like this?"
and Swift replied "I Stay Ready!" He wrote sumthing up real quik and spit it that fast..

So the record was being made all around me and nobody even notices I've been writing my verses the whole time.
So Quik does some pre-leveling of everything and says he can give me a cd to take home and write to and we can come back and lay it 2mrw.
I was like "I'm ready now"..  "Word?.. both verses?"  "Hell Yeah.."  "Shit, get in the booth then!"

Mizza is just watchin all this happen in awe as I was.. and I got Quik vocal coaching me through talkback..
so.. with all that went into it.. it better have hit Billboard and radio like it did!!

Enjoy that lil Westcoast History.. I'll share more shit with yall soon.

Listen to the reaction of the crowd when "John Doe" comes on!

And then check out this historical footage shot in Taipei, Taiwan..
Check out the structure of this huge club.. fans on the floor, both sides,
above us.. and an even bigger room behind us where fans packed that
room and watched us from behind! They had monitors too, so don't trip.. lol.

No doubt G..

"Quik Is The Name" was the first gangsta rap album I ever heard in my life...
..10 yrs later I'm recording with the man himself and history was made!

"John Doe" charted on Billboard and gave me another bullet on my resume.

I was @ The Studio recently with Quik and AMG..
apparently they are both workin on sum new solo material in addition to The Fixxers Lp.

Did you try to get Quik to rap on the song when you recorded it ???  I'm sure most peeps would be more than happy just to receive a Quik beat...

anyways, one of my favorite Shade Sheist tracks, but yall can't forget about that "Where I Wanna Be" joint  8)  even the video was dope!

gotta appreciate the fact that you chop it up with the fans on the regular! and yo Shade, I think I speak for the board when I say we'd like to hear any stories you'd like to share about your time kickin it with some West Coast legends like Quik, AMG, Kurupt, Nate Dogg, Hi-C, etc.

BIG PEACE!

That song is my favorite Shade Sheist track of all time as well, but not just because I LOVE IT...but because most folks around my way haven't heard of Shade Sheist unless they hear "Where I Wanna Be" hit the radio...that's all good for them, but then when I pull up with "John Doe" bumpin EVERY SINGLE TIME whoever is in my ride is ALWAYS like "Whos the fuck is this????"...."I need this CD!!"...."Where'd this come from"....etc.

I let em know it's the homie Shade Sheist and I'm happy that I just put them up on game....and then I throw a mean mug their way for not knowin in the 1st place, and just let em know to step their game up lol.

I think a big reason why artists don't get supported is because they don't really show their supporters that they give a fu*k!

I love Cali Diseaz too.. the funny thing about that song is that the version you all hear is actually called "Musik"
..the original song we recorded to that track was called "Cali Diseaz" with a hook to match the title..
I kept the old name because it just sounded better to me than "Musik".. plus Knoc ended up covering that title!

I wish you continued success---keep pushin' dawg & represent that West!

It was during tha "Playboy" session in Atlanta with Jermaine Dupri that I came up with the name Shade Sheist, as a matter of fact!

What Up Shade Sheist! I remember coppin' your album the first day it came out, that John Doe track was always the shit, but the track Warren G hooked you up with was nice also that "wake up". Pretty much the whole album was hot to me. The Money Ownerz video where you had all them westcoast appearences in it was a good look. I for one appreciate when artists like yourself take time to holla at the fans, props on the story behind "john doe"

Actually Kay Gee from Naughty by Nature produced "Wake Up".. as well as "Where I Wanna Be."
But Warren G was talkin in the background on "Wake Up"

If you're lookin for a hot Shade/Warren joint.. get "Bounce" from "Damizza Presents: Where I Wanna Be"
produced by Warren G and features TQ on the hook!

And I will holla at yall as time permits.. why not!?
