Title: EM's Success
Post by: Last Dragon on June 01, 2001, 12:17:44 AM
I was with my boy and we were talking about Eminem(isn't everybody?).  We were talking about how he sold the amount of albums he has and gotten this recognition.  It seemed simple.  Em has a big fan base from both ends of the Hip-Hop circle.  I live in the hood and Em gets played here every five seconds.  I go to the burbs and Em is in being played a lot there.  Em has a fan base that's unversal.  In all honesty, every major rapper that goes at least Gold can't do it on sales from the urban market alone.  Em is in the same boat as 2Pac, Nelly, Ja Rule, DMX, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Notorious B.I.G., and Jay-Z.  They're being played by the Urban market. But they're also being played in the other market where they got the two car garage and the kid who skateboards.  Xzibit didn't get a platinum album until he was able to break into the other fan-base outside of the block parties and Hip-Hop only fans.  Em has the combined sales of the two.  Urban and Suburban markets.  That's why it doesn't make sense to me when people call Em a pop artist.  His style hasn't really changed since his underground days.  If he's pop, then the guys I mentioned are pop too. 8)

Yeah I see what you mean. The difference between Eminem and the others you mentioned is that they aren't tryin as hard to play for the crowd like him. He is doin all this stuff for shock and it is messin with his music.

I agree with Last Dragon.  Em hasn't changed drastically since his underground days.  Back then it was a way for him to express his anger and diss people he had beef with, now it's the same thing, only now the people he deals with are celebs too, but that should be obvious that he'd have beef with other celebs considering he has nothing left to prove to the underground.  He was hailed an underground legend and now that he's blown up so many of ya'll decided that he's sold out and changed his state of mind to pop.  He's dropped one "poppy" sounding song on his last 2 LP's "SSLP" & "MMLP" and the rest are straight rap, how does this make him pop???  Shit he even said when he was performing with The Up In Smoke Tour in Toronto(I dunno if he said this elsewhere, I was at this one, no others) he started rapping, "The Real Slim Shady" and stopped the track barely 1/4 of the way in and said "Cut that shit off!!!  I don't EVER want to hear a song like that one AGAIN!!!"  which to me means he'll never do another "pop" song like this one or "My Name Is.." ever again.  I think he really regretted doing "The Real Slim Shady" because it was, for most, the turning point in his career from being labelled "rap" to "pop" and he didn't want to be referred to as being a "pop" artist.  That's just my opinion though, agree or disagree, it's what I think.

I see Eminem as the perfect artist. Not quality wise(although i think his shit is very good but not perfect/best/favorite,but he's up there.)I mean he has the best producer, some other great ones,is producing good himself, his raps is tight  but not gangsta but hardcore but funny so everybody can get into it and he's white so he stands out. He's the perfect commercial artist. I think he gets hated on so much though becaus eit's hard for people to accept that somebody talented made it. He has gotten played out but that's not neccesarily his fault. He was designed to be commercially appealing but i don't think e wanted to be pop. I consider Dre and Snoop and Pac pop, but good pop. there is some good pop, just as an over-all genre it sucks. I consider peeps like Nas and Kurupt and most artists we dig "mainstream" not underground but not pop.
I just hate it when peeps that don't even like hip-hop try to say that eminem is the best rap or only good rap. Because it's some of the only real good rap that has gone thru the speakers of their pop station set radios. Anyway...i could give a fuck if it's shock rap or dissing everybody as long as it's tight and his shit is still tight with the exception of that DJ clue song "what tha beat" royce meth and em all came weak on that shit. their flows were on point but lyrically they were lower than usual...peace-Tanjint

I agree about the no more Eminem topics.  I started this one and I hope it cools down for awhile on the Em topics.  It just seemed like a good point to get across.  Em's one of my favorites.  The MMLP was a 4.5 mic album IMO. I think Em topics it will cool down for now anyway.  At least until Devil's Night gets released commercially.  How about we start having a lot of topics about Bizzare? 8)

Heres Big Jake's Opinion on Eminem if you wanna read:

Eminem is TIGHT, he can flow...he's got lyrics....he's got personality....he's got every thing that peeps like Method Man and Nas have...shit maybe even more, the only difference is he's white...yes no matter how much an eminem hater will say "no i don't hate him becuase he's white i just don't like bla bla bla bla bla" yes you are blindly being racist, i really havn't seen a REAL reason for hating on eminem other than white people listen to his music...lol hello the dude is white, i can see you not liking him if he dissed some one you liked or you not liking him because he acts like an asshole in real life (which he does, but rapper doesn't) but to hate him becuase he shows up at a the grammy awards??? and for giving elton John a pound....aright y'all just need to check yourselfs right there, i say FUCK SCHOOL all the damn time but when summer time hits or graduation hits i'm going to miss it , so does that make me a bitch? I will admit that i'm a lil racist toward Asian people but i've met alot of asians i'm cool with , does that make me a Bitch??? really now every and any musical artist dreams about getting a grammy i applaud Em for gettin' the award and showing up (which he only showed up for becuase the Gay and Lesabian groups were pissed he was nominated and wanted him banned so  he went to piss them off) and to perform with Elton John is an Honor....so what if Elton John is a homosexual, how imature....you act like all gays were Hot Pants and fuck anything that has 2 legs....if you believe that then i guess all black dudes are Buligerant Chicken Eating Rapist/Murders too, grow up people don't hate on an artist for doing the right things at the grammy's (yeah i said it)....as a matter of fact don't hate at all respect people's opinions on the guy (which alot of true hip hop fans think he's tight) and move on just becuase you don't like him doesn't make him a bitch, our beloved Westcoast artists such as Kurupt, Daz, Snoop, Dre, Dj quik have all done shit similar to what eminem has done and yet y'all still are down, and the reason why eminem's substance is what it is, is becuase he's trying to do somthing DIFFERENT....we can't all smoke bud and wear khakis i'm sorry, it's like Pac said "don't have to bump this but please respect it"....this fits Eminem's music to a T, you ain't gotta bump it but please respect it

Big Jake is right however people recognize his talent however many people don't like the subjects he raps about. (pop stars, gay people etc.)

yeah that lp is off the holders....

the illest tracks are 'medicated minutes' and 'bottom feeders' with ra the rugged man....rugged man comes so tight on that shit, he ends the verse with

"cage and eon rugged man mighty mi/ why try?/ we ripped this shit put it back out when i die"

as for cage get 'agent orange' and '54' for show...their just straight classics....and also check the ill eminem disses 'still cage' and 'four letter word'
