Title: Mitch Kupchak has to be in the GM of the Year discussion now
Post by: GangstaBoogy on February 02, 2008, 06:55:19 PM
Danny Ainge did a great job. Trading for one superstar is hard enough, but he managed to trade for two in one summer. But when you look at what he gave up to get what he got and what Mitch Kupchak did, I think its a lot closer than most people would admit...

Boston Celtics
Delonte West + Wally Szczerbiak + 1st round: 5th overall pick (Jeff Green) for Ray Allen + the 35th overall pick.

Al Jefferson + Gerald Green + Ryan Gomes + Sebastian Telfair + Theo Ratliff + two first-round picks for Kevin Garnett.

^ Nice, but in a few years they have no future to fall back on. Rondo is pretty good but he is by no means a franchise player you can build around. So championship or not, this team will be the Miami Heat in a few years.

---

Los Angeles Lakers
Maurice Evans + Brian Cook for Trevor Ariza

Javaris Crittenton + Kwame Brown + Aaron McKie + Marc Gasol + two first-round picks for Pau Gasol.

^ Turned shiet into sugar twice and we still have Bynum + Turiaf + Farmar for the future.

Any thoughts? Lets keep this classy folks, its just an opinion.

Stop it, everybody knows what is really going on.

I've been listening to Marc Cohn's "Walking in Memphis" all day now. One of the best songs ever made. Much better than that trade, from a Memphis point of view. Fuck life.

Ainge has always been one of the shittier GMs in the league...He lucked out with being McHale's friend and all.. and if it weren't for Mchale, that 5th pick for Ray Allen woulda' been a decent move, at best.

Kupchak, on the other hand, seems to have put in some major work...and he's always been on top of his game when it comes to drafting. Especially with them 2nd round steals. 8)

Mitch Kupchak should easily take it...PeACe

I know you're a Laker fan and all, and the Lakers made a good trade with Gasol coming in, but if you think there's a chance anybody but Ainge wins you're kidding yourself. No matter who Ainge was friends with or whatever other irrelevant scenario you wanna come up with, nothing changes the fact that last year Boston was 2nd worst in the league and now so far they are the best team in the league, all because of the moves Ainge made. Does that mean he's the best GM in the league? Absolutely not. In fact, i would argue that throughout his tenure as GM on the Celtics he has proven himself to be one of the most incompetent rivaled only by Isaiah Thomas. But its not about that. Its about who did the best job this year, and clearly its Ainge. I don't know if there's ever been a more drastic turnaround than the Celtics this year.

At least wait for Gasol to start doing well on the Lakers before he's "GM of the Year."

As of now, the only move that Kupchak has made that we've seen the benefits of is the Ariza trade. Helped the bench out... not as much as let's say Ainge's Ray Allen trade helped the Celtics.

When Gasol and the Lakers start racking up the W's, then you can compare it to the KG trade. But for now Ainge > Kupchak.

So what if Ainge is friends with McHale? Since he's friendly with another GM that automatically faults him? It's business. You use any connection you can to get the job done. Period. The whole point of networking is to have CONNECTIONS. Ainge had the right connection. He was smart in that regard. He used his friendship to benefit his organization... there's nothing wrong with that.

as of now, Ainge; he was able to make two big trades and turn the Celtics completely around.

by the end of the season, depends on a) their overall record b) how their record is from now till the end of the season.

^It's all good... I'm sure that BabyG's comment was more geared towards those who intentionally ruin threads with their Laker bashing on a consistant basis. I just thought your "joke" was unfunny and dumb...You should already know that the haters get excited over comments like those.

No...because I don't give people heat for being a passionate fan. Your joke mighta' had a chance at being funny if it weren't extremely played out on this board...Either way, it has nothing to do with the discussion. Lets move on, my dude.

i'd think the coach

they didn't really make too many moves; Paul, West and Chandler are having a strong year and Peja has been fairly healthy.

I dunno about Alan Bristow getting any GM of the year considerations, but Byron Scott is an excellent coach. Definitely in the running for coach of the year.
