I'm trying to think of all the elements that make up 'The West Coast Sound' - the classic one that is.
The same kind of samples are used all across hiphop, but the west coast uses certain elements/instruments no others do.
Instrument wize things like that high pitch 'gangsta whine' (what is that shit - how can i recreate that noise?) the Flexatone was used extensively by Death Row, and Daz has still used one on the new DPG check Party At My House he uses one from 03:10 until the end.
These sounds are timeless .. Daz used the whiny thing on Coastin' - I thought they were signs of the old sound.. but they're also moving forwards.
I know how/what a flexatone is because I have one, its a very tricky instrument!
but what instrument is that whiny thing? (i guess its a synth.. but using what setting?)
are there any other signature things you can think of?

i think its some kind of lead or bassline.....like on "serial killa" that is a bass line....you can get taht by going to alot of instruments such as bass (you have a keyboard right) or tuba and going to a lead and tryign with the high pitched c notes and stuff....
if u have a keyboard that is

yeah my groovebox (roland mc-303) has a keyboard.. i can hook one in remotely too - i'll have a fiddle
(btw.. in the anything goes forum u can see the top of it in my sub renovation piccies if u look close, itson the left of my monitor next to the ff steering wheel and lamp)

i get that 'whiny' sound by using a muted trumpet synth on a high octave
-
damn.. must depend on the synth, muted trumpet on my box sounds wack.. but theres a groovy sitar sound on here.. ;D

it depens on how good/bad the synth is....if it's reall bad, high octave can sometimes give reall hevy sounds. I use roland jc 2080 witch hve like 1000 intruments.

the ones used in the old deathrow are a variation of synthesizers and just holding your finger on different wood wind instruments on your keyboard option
