The forty-two year old had been expected to announce that his playing days were coming to a close, but early today announced to the Brazilian press that he would also be retiring from his coaching duties at Vasco.
"After the 30th, I stop. I will not go on even as coach," he confirmed.
Romario will now help the Brazilian Football Confederation in their preparations for the 2014 World Cup, which will see the world's premier international competition held in Brazil for the first time since 1950.
"I will contribute to promoting the 2014 World Cup. I will work on that," he affirmed.
Romario is currently in the middle of serving a 120 day ban from playing after testing positive for finasteride after Vasco's game with Palmeiras in October of last year.
The substance was contained in the anti-baldness medicine that he was taking to curb his rapid hair loss, but the Brazilian Supreme Court of Sport Justice refused to lessen the length of the ban on appeal in January.
He has been in temporary charge of Vasco since Valdir Espinosa left at the end of the Brazilian league season in December and although chairman Eurico Miranda was keen for it to become a permanent appointment, Romario had always stated that it was only a short-term arrangement.
Romario's presence will be sorely missed at Vasco, where he has spent twelve off-and-on years of his career, having also enjoyed spells in Spain, Holland, Qatar, Australia and the United States.
He has noted over 1000 goals in his career and will go down in the history books as a true legend of the Brazilian game.
