What are some duos, whether it's rap, R&B, or anything else, that you really can't tell apart on songs unless you pay close attention? It took me a few songs to tell Dre and Big Boi apart...and even longer for Mobb Deep, just because I didn't listen to them. I even got Puff and Ma$e mixed up before I knew who Ma$e was, like on 112 "Only you" remix.
I'd say....The Clipse..I have never really paid enough attention to them individually. For the Young Gunz, I can tell them apart on a song, but if you throw one of them on their own song, I probably couldn't say who it was at first. Slum Village...I haven't heard enough of their music to really pay attention to who's who in close detail, but I know they sound different. Dilated Peoples...I have never paid attention to them enough.
For R&B...I can usually tell the lead singer, and that's it. For 112, I can only tell Slim...for Jagged Edge, I know one dude's voice stands out, but I don't know which one he is. For early New Edition, I can only tell Bobby and Ralph. Blackstreet, I never paid them close enough attention individually. Boyz II Men..I can tell all of their voices apart, but can't put names or faces to them without watching. Gap Band...all I know is Charlie, who easily stands out. Guy...all I know is Aaron Hall by voice. Isley Brothers, I only know Ron. Kool and the Gang, I don't know any members names. Next, I just know know RL.

evidence and raaka deffinately dont sound alike.......very differnet voices, styles, lyrical structure ect.

you cant tell evidence & raaka apart? stop listening to rap

D-12 and Cunninlynguists.
-
Dilated Peoples...I have never paid attention to them enough.
Since they are one of my favorite groups, it is obvious which one is which, but he admitted that he doesn't listen to them. Yukmouth and Numskull of the Luniz used to sound pretty similar, but both of their styles have changed a lot. Cunninlynguists seem to sound a little different from each other, but it is kind of tough and I have barely and idea who is who. If you spend enough time listening to almost any group, you can differentiate between members, but if you only know a few songs, there's a good chance that you will not be able to tell. Also, it took a long time to figure out who each member was listening to Living Legends, Hieroglyphics, and Wu-Tang because there are so many damn rappers in the groups.

LOL...as I said, I don't listen to them. I am not the type to try to front like I know it all...and I'm sure that if I played one of their songs right now, I would be like "ohhhhhh.....ok yeah I know who's who" but I'm not tryin to impress anybody. I'm sure I know MUCH MORE than enough about Rap to make up for not knowin this...so I'll pass on your suggestion.

Yeah that's definitely the truth...I didn't pay any attention to who was who with the Luniz until Yuk came out solo. For Living Legends, I only know Murs by himself, because that's my blood. Hiero, I don't know. Wu-Tang, I didn't know until some of them started coming out solo.

nappy roots, clipse,

Ying Yang Twinz
-
hah good topic. I have difficulties with d12 and the clipse too.
-
LOL hell yeah with Nappy Roots and Ying Yang, even though I play Ying Yang at every party. Field Mob too...I realize it's different artists, but I don't know them by name. With Ying Yang, it's no hope though LOL

I think most people have indeed had this problem at some point, especially in the very beginning when you get to know a certain group.
For me, I remember I couldn't tell Pimp-C apart from Bun-B. But that was just a matter of voices. I had never heard any of their voices apart. So I had to really concentrate at first on the lyrics where they would say something along the lines of "this is Bun-B", and after a while I got a hold of it. Watching videos also helps to identify the voice with the right artist.
Good topic btw.

Onyx at first.... cuz everybody in the group was screaming thier heads off. Also Das Efx because they both used the same style.
-
First thing that comes to mind is D Block / Lox.

Clipse

Yeah, that's definitely the case. If I don't see a video, or hear the artists apart on a few songs, it can be nearly impossible. I didn't start noticin Pimp and Bun apart until 02 or so when they started gettin on tracks separate...then I was like damm, they are completely different.

the clipse from time 2 time

I couldn't tell the Lox back when they first dropped, but I can now. With all those other groups...I definitely can't, even though I'm sure I could if I really listened to them. I can tell with SAS though.
Everybody can tell Outkast apart, but it probably took me until 96-97 to see the difference, because they both had the same nasally voice, and their styles were more similar then. After a while, it's like damm, they are on some Magic n Kareem shit...different as hell, but it works perfect.
-
i can tell nappy roots pretty easily..probably due in part cause i think 1 of them boys is HELLA under-rated...skinny deville
-
Clipse for sure, Channel Live, shit I know there's more but I can't think of any.
I remember when "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down", came out I had no idea there were 2 dudes rappin on that until I saw the video, lol.
-
I've been listening to Quik's music for a minute now, and I still can't tell 2nd II None, AMG, and Hi-C apart. They all sound alike to me. Good thread!

Definetely Mobb Deep and Outkast's earlier stuff.
I remember having trouble when I first started listening to rap (2002?) with N.W.A. Eazy-E was obvious, but I can't remember if I had trouble with Ren/Cube or Ren/Dre ??? Looking back now, I have no idea why I had this problem.............
-
With the exception of EDI, Noble and Mussolini, I find the Outlawz hard to tell apart(esp. when they were Dramacydal).
-
i still cant tell the difference between Havoc and prodigy sometimes. Fuck it i just enojoy their music. Well before the hole g unit thing anyways lol.
-
Outlawz for sure. It doesn't help that they can't rap for shit.
