I mean you would think Kurupt's last album would at least go gold with just the west coast sales alone. The East Coast does a great job of supporting their artists when wack cats like Ja Rule sell a million copies in NY alone. Why is that?
-
I think one reason people have posted before is that even West Coast based (but syndicated) Radio stations play mainly east coast stuff.
The established major powers are on the east.. along with things like MTV.
Publicity wise Dre did the "right thing" (he could be called a sell out too) by taking his 2001 release show to MTV in NY, and of course.. MTV come to Eminem wherever he is.
-
i wouldn't call dre a sell out for doing that becuase dr. dre's name is one of the hugest names in all of music and when one of the hugest people in music releases an album of corse mtv is going to swoop them up and show love (i dont' know why people hate on mtv) kurupt did go gold people all over the west love kurupts streetz iz a mutha i don't know many rap listeners here who havn't heard it yet, and not all new york rappers blow up....most barly go wood just the bigger ones get big or the ones on Def Jam ya dig....and the radio out here mainly plays whatever they consider to be a hit, i don't know how many times i heard "who wanna ride with us" on the radio out here proabably a million and a half times

That's why yall should live in the Midwest ... cause we hear it all ... all the ish on east and all the ish on the west meets in one place ... WISCONSIN BABY! ...
Not only that we have some tight underground peeps. I might have to upload some for you all to listen to. But most people hear dig da east mainstream ish. Nelly is close, about two states away so he is big. Wisconsin's biggest name is probably Latrell Sprewell ... he is a native here. As for music ... we have a new POP group called 5th gear ... don't mind them ... as for rap ... nothing mainstream, but if you travel to chi-town which is a good three hour drive, we can visit R Kelly and his clique as well as common and some other dude I can't think of.

i think the problem was that whole 97-99 period where the west didnt have many commercial hits and all of the come-and-go fans on the west defected to the east or south.
now a lot of west coasters are coming with some dope shit and some of those fans are coming back, but some are still in the jay-z/dmx era.
the west just needs to consistently drop heaters so those fans dont need to look elsewhere.
also its great Dre and Snoop are leading the way, but it really is time for some others to get love, the west cant be living off one or two legends, cuz if sumtin bad happens to them, heaven forbid, or they retire, the other guys are all stuck chasing their tails. See: Tupac's death and its relation to the west's commercial decline.
-
One reason is because we play music from every coast on our stations.
Another reason is that the West is more diverse than the East in race, music, the whole shabang.

YUP.....but NOT ENUFF of our own

First off, live in the Mid-West, tried it. I say hell no! No offense, but it's boring, and most rap I hear on the radio is dated. I am back n=home were I belong, listening to Power 106 and Big Boy everyday. New westcoast shit, everyday.
As for the eastcoast takng over. I'll say this, up until 5 years ago, eastcoast was hardly ever play, except Biggie and Wu Tang. It was westcoast all the time. Then the 'Pac died, and Biggie died, but while 'Pac's death symbolized the fall of the west, every greedy muthaphukka from the east used Biggie's name to elevate themselves. (see Jay Z, the Lox, Busta Rhymes, and every other eastcoast rapper that basically shout out Biggies name on any giving song.) Now though, there are a lot of westcoast songs on the radio again, but not nearly to the way it was before. Though compared to the Mid-West, a hell of a lot more.

The only east coast I hear on Power is like Jay Z, &b Ja Rule (And barely) DMX, so I dont know what Bdogg is talkin about...
-
naw man.....the west coast artist dont make radio friendly tracks...as much as the east coast does........
All i hear up here on the stations.....the top 40 stations...is east coast stuff..ever so often they will throw in snoop, or tupac...and thats it.........other than that...its timbaland..jay z..etc.........
there is only 2 stations here in seattle that represent from all over......One station is on fuckin AM! so it isnt as clear and you can hardly get the signal depending on where u live!
the other station is on a Public Access Station and they only get 3 Hours ever Sunday to play the music.
But what is cool about both these stations, is that they represent...For Local Artist,South,North,East,West,Mid-, also...One minute we are listenin to some Devin the dude, next we are listening to some Mausberg......to Cap O.N.E.......that is what makes a artist move units..when they have support from there local radio stations....we cant just blame the people out west for not supporting there artist......
They are going to buy what they hear on the radio all the time, you cant blame them, if it sounds good i would buy it too. the thing is though there is alot of music out there that doesnt get played and millions of listeners will never know about how good the album is.
I remember hearing stuff about the Bay Area and how the local radio stations didnt do shit for the local artist....and that is just wrong....
On the east coast..all they here about 80% of there music is probably east coast....they will support it then.......Westside Connection...spoke the truth....but again, that is why its cool that Snoop has a radio station where he shows luvv to all artist...from all regions..not just cali.....
Peace,
Hambone.

Whatever...I hear 90 % West Coast on Power when I listen...
-

Is that from another coast other than the West??...thank you you made my point. Don't forget the music from Nelly and some Southern cats.
-
Well, of course they are gunna play music from a different coast...If they didnt than it would suck hearing West Coast 24/7...

no way! thats my dream radio station lol
-
Well thats what they do on the otherside of the country. Play East coast music 24/7. I remember goin over there a couple years ago to N.Y. They only played Dre and sometimes Snoop.

Exactly....my ex girlfriend went to college in NY, and she said she only heard snoop or dre tracks over there...every blue moon...........
and thats are point, its not that we are not supporting them, the rest of the country does not have a outlet to hear them. The only way a person can hear westcoast rap 24/7 is by loggin on to the internet and listenin to a website.......thats sad......
give it time...in about 10-15 years...things will change.....at least that is what i am hoping for.....
-
BULLSHIT NIK. I get power and it's all fuckin jay-z and ja rule and shit, i guess we listen at different times. there's alot of reason but mainly cuz radio plays east coast shit. i don't see why peopl buy shit that sounds whack off the bat, it don't compute to us rational thinkaz. peace-Tanjint
-
i feel ya man...but alot of the peeps buying the cd..are kids that dont know a thing..about hip hop...just that they like it! and u know the rappers dont care..as long as it sells......
-
I live in NY and the ONLY west coast shit they play here is Dre and Snoop, the rest is east and south.
-
At least we get all the world premiers, interviews, New West Coast shit, etc...
-
Here in philly they almost NEVER play west coast artist. Everything comes from the east and south. They rarely even play dre and snoop. The only time they played dre and snoop songs was when they came to philly for the up in smoke tour. Other than that it's all dmx, ja rule, little mo, nelly, ray j, little kim and shit.
-
Lil MO??, Ray J?? - Damn thats real messed up. They are startin to play that stuff over here.
-
On Power, the only east coast artist I hear right now is Jay Z. And it's only 2 songs. Oh yeah, and the Queen Bridge song, or whatever with Nas. I hardly ever hear Ja Rue, and DMX hasn't been play in since his last CD. It's been mainly Xzibit, Kurupt, and anything featuring Nate Dogg. "You make my hight come down, OOHH You make my high, come down"
-
Xz-actly...
-
Y'all ain't countin the South though. Ludacris, Outkast, etc. They take alot of airtime too. And Nelly, St. Lunatics. Bith of their songs are playin.
