Title: A friend of mine needs some help in finding hip-hop songs...
Post by: CRAFTY on February 10, 2008, 08:35:56 AM
A friend of mine is in his last year of college (Journalism) and he's currently in the process of writing his thesis. It deals with the art of graffiti, more specifically about people who do graffiti illegally.
As part of his thesis, he's making a TV-documentary which will show some interviews with taggers, give background info about graffiti and so on, and so for this documentary, he's looking for hip-hop songs with a somewhat dark sound/feeling to it, since that would obviously match with the overall vibe of doing graffiti: mostly at night, it's illegal, ...

The songs do not necessarily have to deal with graffiti in specific (would be nice if they do), but if you could just give him some suggestions that would be appreciated. Thx for the help in advance WCC 8)

So far, he's thinking of using some of these songs:

Artifacts - Wrong Side of da Tracks
Das EFX - Real Hip-Hop
Das EFX - If Only
Eminem ft RBX & Sticky Fingaz - Remember Me (the sounds of spray cans in the beginning)
Jurassic 5 - What's Golden
Ohmega Watts - Where It All Started
Pack FM - Click, Clack, Spray

T-Dogg: major props for that video. That's indeed a good song. Also cool that he's from Europe...something different than always using artists from the States.

QuietTruth: +1 for that song bro. Had never heard it myself. That's a perfect track for his documentary indeed.

Thanks guys 8) Keep the suggestions coming...

Check the movies "Wild Style" and "Beat Street", as well as their soundtracks.  There are some great images and insight into the originations of Hip Hop and graf as well.

Here's a classic joint from Melle Mel called the "Beat Street Theme".  The first verse is really dope and is all about bringing more color into the world, etc.  All about graffiti.

"Every time you touch a spray paint can, Michael Angelo's soul controls your hand".  Classic shit!
