Title: Crooked I Signs Deal for B.O.S.S
Post by: Episcop Cruel Cvrle on February 21, 2008, 01:56:55 AM

this for now...but official news from boss will come soon...

“Everybody on the street waiting on my album/The shit never drops, people asking me, ‘How come?’”

You get the impression that, as of February 2008, Crooked I is probably being pressed more on the status of his debut than he ever has before. That’s startling when you consider that the perennially delayed set has been hypothesized for over a decade. At this point last year, it seemed like little more than a fantasy. With scarce information on its release, the Long Beach MC was written off by cynics, destined to go the way of so many other artists that never got their just due. What happened to suddenly push a troubled industry veteran to the forefront of West Coast hip-hop?

“The Weeklies happened!” comes the chuckled response. He is referring, of course, to the Hip-Hop Weekly series, a collection of weekly freestyles that has spawned several imitations and serves as Crooked I’s audible portfolio for the past 10 months. It has cleverly turned attention away from bothersome topics like the artist’s former affiliation with the most controversial rap label in history, Death Row Records, and instead showcased the phenomenal talent of the self-proclaimed “A&R’s dream.”

A double-edged sword, it is the Weeklies that also leave rabid listeners impatiently awaiting that solo debut. With each new freestyle bringing Crooked to the attention of another possible customer, it made perfect sense to hold off on the release for as long as consumers continued to discover his music through the free drops. Now, with a full year of unleashing his flows every Wednesday approaching, the end is nigh. “I kinda hate to see the series go, man,” states the lyricist. “But I think a year of dropping these things is enough!”

Crook’s slight reluctance to bury the series is understandable. Besides bringing him new fans, it seriously aided his transformation into a current media darling. Recently, he appeared alongside the likes of Saigon and Lupe Fiasco on the front cover of XXL’s “Leaders of the New School” issue. Although it was his second appearance on the magazine’s front, he is candid in why he takes particular pride in this shoot. “The first time I was on the cover, (Death Row CEO) Suge had just got out of jail,” he nonchalantly reveals. “They were really more excited in talking to him.” His tone is sincerely thankful when he adds, “It felt good to get on because of my hard work and determination.”

The rise in publicity means that Crook finally has a satisfactory platform to deliver his message on. When we last spoke in August of 2007, the particulars of his contract were sketchy. Now, Crook is enthusiastic about revealing some details. “B.O.S.S. has a home!” he exclusively announces with an understandable relief. “I can’t say too much because we’re waiting on the press release, but the ink is on the paper.”

“[Hip-Hop Weeklies] kept adding extra zeros to my checks,” and mean that Crook is now in a position to have his debut distributed throughout the world. Whilst I do my best to press for more information, that’s all Crook is willing to say on that matter for the time being. Needless to say, B.O.S.S.’s exact release date remains an unfortunate mystery.

“I’ve been on my grind since gazelles and rope chains/Dealt with the ups and downs like it was no thing…”

Crook’s aforementioned message is a simple one. It is the one that it has been more or less since he stepped on to the hip-hop scene. The West Coast has changed drastically since the rise of Snoop and Dre. No one is more keen to unveil the New West to the wider world than Crooked. Despite leaking his albums debut single, “New West Anthem,” some time ago, he is adamant that it shall remain the lead-off track and video. Although he has recorded a wealth of material since, “N.W.A.,” as it is also known, is still his baby. “I’ve seen songs take a year to grow into a Billboard hit,” Crook notes. He has big plans for the track’s video, too. The visual will showcase the new West Coast: home for those who favor Harley motorcycles and creased Dickies over Daytons and khaki suits. The environments of such individuals will be completely exposed. When Crooked states confidently that there isn’t a ‘hood in the West Coast that he cannot set foot in, it seems less like a boast and more like another reason why he’s the New West ambassador.

I ask if now is the time for people’s perception of the West Coast to change. “I think so, man,” comes the hasty reply. “And I know I’m the man for the job. I realize now that this is something that I have to do.” In fact, more than money, that was the motivation behind Hip-Hop Weekly. Impeccable verses are being released without charge every week, purely for the love of hip-hop. It was a concept lost on some. “I was in the studio with Ja Rule and Irv Gotti. We were working on this remix to a track that Ja’s got out called ‘Sunshine.’ Irv came up to me and was like, ‘Yo, Crook, I can’t believe you’re giving all this away for free! I kinda don’t like that, dawg!’” He pauses, only to say with total clarity, “But look where it’s got me.”

i dont get it man, every fag brings out 1 album whenever he wants, crooked promises and promises since years, didnt he say b.o.s.s comes out 2007 ?now i bet in august 2008 he will announces that it comes out in summer 2009.also i really doubt that he will have dope beats,he needs to work with dre or timbaland or so,not with dj bean and shit.his bossacre mixtape is the worst shit he ever made, not a single song that could make it into charts or anything.do you think the game would be so famous without the first album and that beats from this is how we do etc ???his hhw's r so good because he uses popular beats, from his own beats only NWA is good....butlets c

but after waitin 4 years i really hope that he invested all that years in gang bangin songs.......................

I can't say too much because we're waiting on the press release, but the ink is on the paper.

I hope he isn't lying about the ink being on the paper. We've heard Crooked saying many times before that the "deal is almost complete", but now it finally seems that the record deal has officially been signed.

A summer release date would be cool 8)

Yeah, if the album was dropping back in '05 when it was supposed to... I think either that or "Cali Boyz" would have been a perfect single.

crooked needs to stop bullshiting,he needs to become profesionall, first thing is he needs a daily updated website man, second thing is he needs to tell us a month when the album finaly will come, third is he needs to work with others than these unknown undergroundrappers.also he can forget nwa as first single man,the song is already 2 years old and i listened to it 500 times so nobody would buy it anymore as single

this nigg needs to think about his work, weekly is good but look at his shitty mixtapes, nobody would but that shit if his album is like that,he needs dopeeeeeeee beats and famous rappers on his side, first album can be his last album
