I always liked that cool/ smooth Jazz shit. But my knowledge about Jazz is very limited, and I'm struggling with all the subgenres. I rather like modern sounds, I'm not really feelin' that Louis Armstrong
old school- shit. So who can recommend me some modern/ smooth Jazz (artists/genres?). Music examples will also be appreciated

Smooth jazz is not really jazz, any jazz junkie will tell you that. If you don't like "that old school shit", Armstrong, Miles Davis, Mingus, Coltrane, Duke etc, maybe jazz just isn't for you. Sorry.

ok, I know that it's critisized for beein' too comercial, so maybe your're right since hip-hop is going the same direction. So when would you say "real Jazz" died?
No need to feel sorry 8) :P

Jazz as a creative art form was pretty much dead by the early 80's, with just a few noteworthy exceptions. Quality jazz is still being made today, just not at the same level as it was in the 50's and 60's. If you really wanna get into jazz, your first album should most definitely be Miles Davis - "Kind Of Blue". Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" should be an excellent follow-up. Basically, almost any album from the 1940 - 1960 era is golden.
PS: Sorry for the "sorry" comment. :) I didn't mean to sound cocky or rude.

Yeah, fuck that Kenny "Jew" G, wack ass watered down waste management. Check out Yusef Lateef, one of my personal faves.

I'm veeery far from an expert on Jazz, but I like:
- Miles
- John Coltrane
- John Scofield
- Frank Zappa's Jazz stuff
- Herbie Mann
- John Zorn
to name a few spontaneously. But I rarely listen to "pure" jazz, I love a lot of stuff that draws inspiration from jazz and its intricate harmonic structures, but I don't sit down and just listen to a whole jazz record too often

no problem homie. I'm not bitchin'.
It's not that I hate pure Jazz, I like Loius, and sometimes I can listen to that, but after a while it becomes very hard to listen.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

He got served by that South Park episode. I always have to laugh when I hear his name ;D

Rather than spew out a bunch of names, I'll give you an outlet where you can learn about new stuff on your own. Download the iTunes software then click on "radio" and then "Jazz." There should be a pretty sizable collection of online jazz stations to listen to. Thats usually what I listen to when I sit down for dinner.

Check out my pops at www.pocketslam.com (http://www.pocketslam.com)....he has a modernized throwback sound that almost every Jazz fan seems to love.

You asked for modern jazz? That's kind of an odd genre, since it doesn't really remind you of the classics - blending in only too smoothly with lounge and club music. Try some Koop or The Five Corners Quintet. If you prefer the first, you might want to digg into some Jazzanova, Nuspirit Helsinki, Nicola Conte. If you prefer The Five Corners Quintet, it might be nice to dig into some older jazz and start with the obvious classics, see if you enjoy that.

Matter of fact, take your pick while you're at it!

that koop video is cool, reminds me of pink martini, almost like amy winehouse minus the production, or an upbeat nora jones
