Title: Lately, I've been on some 90's East Coast, Jazzy, laid back, etc etc....
Post by: R-Tistic on March 02, 2008, 08:37:05 PM
Back in December, this group on my campus asked me to DJ this event they had that required me to play more laid back, somewhat soulful, somewhat gritty, Hip Hop or Hip Hop Soul tracks...so I started goin through the songs and artists I had, and started finding more songs. Next thing you know...I started playin this style of music more than anything else I've been playin, and I'm still on that tip...playin everything from the early 90's East Coast Tribe and Digable Planets, to Tha Liks early days, to the mid-late 90's Primo sound, to the newer Hip Hop soulful soundin artists like Little Brother and Raheem Devaugn.

Some of the songs I've been playin the hell out of lately are:
A Tribe Called Quest - Find a way; Check the rime
De La Soul - Buddy (Native Tongues remix)
Digable Planets - Rebirth of slick
Jazzy Jeff and Raheem Devaugn - My soul ain't for sale
Little Brother, Raheem Devaugn - Don't you have a man
Nas - Nas is like; Can't forget about you; Made you look
Common - Doin it
Outkast - Jazzy Bells
Janet Jackson ft. Q-Tip - Gone til it's gone
Alkaholiks - Make room
Scarface ft. Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel - Guess who's back
Eric B. and Rakim - Don't sweat the technique
Jay-Z - Can't knock the hustle; Dead presidents
Kris Kross ft. Da Brat and JD - Live and die for Hip Hop
Mos Def - Mrs. fat booty

I know that some of these songs may seem to be a different vibe...but overall, most of them have more of a laid back but still upbeat sound to them. What are some songs like these that you all are feelin?

A Tribe Called Quest - Find a way; Check the rime
The Low End Theory is easily one of my favourite 90's east coast records, still sounds so well put together after all these years, the whole baselines and jazz samples through out the album make it a classic..

Nas - Nas is like; Can't forget about you; Made you look
Common - Doin it
Outkast - Jazzy Bells
Janet Jackson ft. Q-Tip - Gone til it's gone
Alkaholiks - Make room
Scarface ft. Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel - Guess who's back
Eric B. and Rakim - Don't sweat the technique
Jay-Z - Can't knock the hustle; Dead presidents
Kris Kross ft. Da Brat and JD - Live and die for Hip Hop
Mos Def - Mrs. fat booty

I know that some of these songs may seem to be a different vibe...but overall, most of them have more of a laid back but still upbeat sound to them. What are some songs like these that you all are feelin?

You must be the same age as me, 25... so in the spirit of nostalgia for hip-hop's golden age I will share some memories and thoughts on the songs you mentioned...

-Digable Planets- Rebirth of the Slick-  That girl from the group sounds so dope man, her style, voice, lyrics, everything is smooth and on point.  She had her own flavor.   And she was on the righteous tip.  You got to love Digable Planets if your into Afrocentric/Islamic hip-hop.

-Nas- Nas Is Like-  I remember this song and album came out just after Eminem dropped the Slim Shady LP.  I remember I still had some left over animosity for the East Coast from the old 96 days, and I really wanted to see Dre/West Coast emerge again with Eminem, so I remembering wanting Nas' album to fail.  I was disappointed when it sold 500,000 in the first week, because I felt like Eminem's album was much better and that it shouldn't have sold more.  But... "Nas Is Like" was an undeniably hot joint, Primo on the track, and the video was Nas just wearing regular clothes and doin regular things in the streets like sittin on project steps, etc, less is more to me.  I love the old video's that were more simple.  I ended up buying this Nas album because of this track, but was disappointed and didn't like any of the other songs on the album.  It wasn't for about 2 more years until Nas would become my favorite rapper behind Pac and Em.

Outkast- Jazzy Bells-  I remember Outkast first album sounded gangster to me.  When they came out with the second, they came with a positive, mystic, Afro-centric sound and everyone was into it, it was even mainstream.  They played "Jazzy Bells" even on my local radio.  Their music had me wanting to change my own life even and live positive but back then I didn't know how to do that yet.

Janet and Q-Tip-  Got Till It's Gone-  This song was so smoothe, I love this song and this was from my favorite Janet Jackson album.  The only one I actually bought.  She comes way real on this track.  My favorite Janet Jackson song.

Erik B. and Rakim-  Don't Sweat the Technique-  I didn't get into hip-hop till the Chronic era when I was 11.  So I missed this song origionally... it wasn't till like 99 or 2000 that I finally went back and checked out the 80's classics.  This is probably my favorite 80's joint of all.   Rakim is everything hip-hop should be.  Great track, Rakim kills it, and the imagery and smoothness in his rhymes are the stuff of legends.

Kriss Kross- Live and Die In Hip-Hop-  This was my anthem in 8th grade, when I was 13.  I was in the wanting to be a player phase and all that, having alot of fun with girls back in jr. high it was all really cool then, no bullshit... and people always remember Kriss Kross when they were kids, but I will remember them for the album Young Rich and Dangerous.

Mos Def- Miss Fat Booty-  When this song came out I wasn't really into conscious hip-hop yet, and Mos Def's album didn't reach me at first.  I didn't really understand why it went gold back then.  It was actually Talib Kweli's first solo album Train of Thought when I really got into conscious hip-hop.  I went back and bought this album then and loved it.
