I kind of had the same thing happen to me when I went back to the Bay, and now I'm back in Long Beach for school, and I only miss it a little bit, and only miss a few people, although a lot of my friends moved away. It's cool to see people from the Bay down in SoCal though.
A lot of it depends on what part you are in, and what kinds of things you are doing. The weather is nice in the Bay, especially if you are close to the water, Oakland, San Francisco, etc., because it isn't too cold during winter, and the summers are nice and not burning up. If you are thinking about school, Berkeley has a good college environment (a lot of weirdo's though), and Santa Cruz is cool too, and it's right by the beach. It's a different vibe, but it's similar to the L.A. area where a lot of things are so spread out that you have different cultures and everything. The best thing to do is take a trip to visit, you have to hit up San Francisco, and from there, it depends on what you are into.

I live in pleasanton...kinda inland about 20 mintues from oakland and san jose and 45 from SF. its cool, theres lots of shit around
im use to so cal weather and culture but its kinda similar. it gets colder up here though

It's a lot more laid back than LA, unless you're in SF. The weather is cooler and foggier, but very mild and it doesn't really ever get cold. The culture is definitely ultra liberal and there is a lot of diversity. Oakland is like the second most diverse city in the country or state or something like that. It is mostly safe except a few neighborhoods in Oakland and Vallejo/Richmond. It is still California so as much as we like to brag or talk shit about the differences between north and south it's still pretty similar.

Oakland is grimy as fuck, if you goto the wrong areas at night, and your white, chances are that your hood will get stompt out. other then that, Hunters Point in san francisco has to be the dirtiest, grimiest ghetto in the nation.

all im saying is the bay area is not a safe place to live anymore. the crime rate is definitely on par with LA nowadays throughout the whole bay except for a few rich suburbs.

It was a fun place growing up. I won't know how it is as an adult, because I'm barely turning 18 this year. But there were always house parties around, fun place to kick it.

It's just a different type of alive. LA is kinda of a "art is business" mecca so it's constantly bussling and stressful, where art is still art not a commodity in the bay, so it is a huge scene of people not trying to battle each other.You'll find less assholes and tools which is fucking great, but sometimes cities like SF and Santa Cruz are a little too liberal and crazy..so, your pick.... No smog, just fog, but that feels good. And significantly lower commute times, which is refreshing. I like LA's weather and I like commercialism so I def have love for LA but to me I would wanna live in the bay longer than the LA area.

If you want to live in a place where the living condition is safe and well in one spot but turns into a straight war zone out of nowhere only 2 blocks over, then the bay is for you. If you want to live in a place where there is nothing out of the ordinary and the world turns daily in the most liberal way possible, then the bay is for you.
The bay is a place of extreme, either to the positive or negative. Like for example, if you're a sports fan, be ready to die for that team if needed or don't represent it at all. This is the land of extreme, cats will die for the smallest thing they believe in.
Many products you use daily you will find roots in the bay. Every damn website you visit has originated in the bay, you literally go from the google exit to the yahoo exit to the ebay exit to the youtube exit, to microsoft, apple and every other major computer-related companies. It is the land that offers the most opportunity as far as making money goes. There will always be a way to get your money, if you don't find it, you will get trained, people out here love showing each other how to hustle and overcome hardships, but at the same time if you let them get too close, they will take from you what they can get. You got the most genius minds in the country, but you also have the biggest pimps, hustlers and criminalized ways of thinking around you, it's either one extreme or the other, you rarely find anyone in the gray area.
You got the most millionaires per capita out here, but it's also home to the most homeless in the nation. It is the mecca for drugs, prostitution, gays, gangs, homicides and every wrong thing you can think of in society. It is the most expensive area to live in, highest rent, mortgage, gas and also carries the highest minimum wage. If you can make it out here, you can make it anywhere and I firmly believe in that. Eleven countries later, and I can honestly say this is the integration of all in one. The bay is also the most diverse place in the whole world. Racism rarely ever happens anywhere out here. Everything is accepted and always normal, even when at times morality says that it shouldn't be.
The bay is alive, it goes down nightly, and in San Francisco alone, you will never get bored although it is one of the smallest major cities in the nation. If you like living in a fast-paced never know what to expect life, then this is for you. Don't come out here thinking it is a slow normal life and try to live happily ever after because this ain't the place. This is the jungle. And I recommend you having a friend or 2 to direct you on how these streets work. It's always good to know your surroundings, but in the bay, it is necessary.

Oh don't get me wrong you still drive everywhere, it ain't new york. If you live in SF, you don't gotta drive as much cause they have BART and you can walk but anywhere else you will need a car just to drive around town and shit. by ultra liberal, i mean stupid baby boomer generation white people who practically hate their race so they poo poo any part of life not extremely diverse or artistic, forgoing reality almost. they are also found in ethnic neighborhoods trying to be down with blacks and latinos but just coming off as outsiders looking in. You can find these people in Berkeley, SF, Santa Cruz and Oakland the most. They really ain't a threat though, and some share really good ganja with you and like cool music.
